Hello. Im 39 years old and I found a lump on my breast a few days ago. I went to the doctor and now Im scheduled to have a mammogram next Tuesday. My mom had breast cancer(Stage 0) and she is doing fine now. She was around 55 when she was diagnosed. The doctor said my lump is very small and moves around. It does not seem attached to anything. Im so scared. I do not know how I will ever make a week and then Im worried what will happen if it is cancer. I will have to get chemo and will be very sick and lose all my hair. These are all the thoughts running around in my head. Does anyone have any advice for me? I feel lost and alone.

    The waiting is the hardest part, it's terrible and I'm so sorry that you have to go through it. ((((Hugs))))
    That being said, please don't jump the gun and assume it's cancer. At this point, it can be anything from a cyst to a fibroadenoma, both of which are benign.
    The first step is a mammogram, which you're going to have next Tuesday. After that, if they see something on the mammogram that they feel needs more attention, you'll most likely have an ultrasound. If they still see something of concern, you will need a biopsy. Only a biopsy can tell you for sure if what you have is cancer or not. And keep in mind that 80% of biopsies are benign!
    If, on the off chance, that it is cancer....that doesn't mean you will need chemo! Many women with breast cancer do NOT go through chemo, nor do they get very ill.

    Just take a few deep breaths and try to relax. Find something to keep yourself busy until your mammogram appointment because dwelling on it and constantly thinking about this will only stress you out even more, and that's not good.

    Thanks so much for your kind words. It means a lot to me that you replied. I feel better after reading your post and I will reread whenever I get scared to help keep me sane. Thanks again for explaining these things to me. I wasn't really sure about them. Makes more sense now.

    Hi Krista, I thought I would send you a message since I am also the daughter of a mom who had bc. I have also had two biopsies (both benign!). I think as daughters of moms who had bc, we are always waiting for the other shoe to drop. If you are like me, you are just waiting for your bc....like its only a matter of time. As one doctor told me, "Mary, you are not your mother". That being said, etnasgrl has given you some great facts to rely on. A very very good chance this is nothing.
