Could this be mets?

Hi Ladies,

For about a week I've had a pain under my left ear that sometimes extends along under my jaw to the area of my Adams apple. I saw my doctor, and she said I had a sinus infection, but she couldn't feel any lumps. Because I am paranoid, I called my MO to ask how soon thyroid cancer would show up, since I had supraclavicular radiation ending Oct.9. He said that wouldn't show up for at least 10 years. Does anyone have any experience of pain similar to this? If it doesn't go away soon I will ask for an ultra sound, but it's Sunday night and I'm scared....thanks so much!

I don't think anyone here can give you any really definitive answers, and even if someone did have the same sort of pain that you do, their reason for it and yours can easily be completely different. Paranoia is kind of "normal" for all of us, I think, though, so you aren't alone in that boat. In any case, I think most oncologists tell us that unless a pain or symptom continues for two weeks or more, we shouldn't worry about it---which is easy for them to say, right? If it were me though, and I was so freaked out about it that I was worrying myself silly, I'd probably go ahead and push for whatever tests were necessary, asap....but honestly, you should be fine to wait another week and see if it gets better or goes away.

To actually answer the question though, yeah I've had pain like that multiple times, and it was because of a sinus infection, which in my case led to tonsillitis. I also had something pretty similar that eventually turned out to be an infected tooth. All of this was years before I had cancer.

Because of where it is located and no lumps, unlikely cancer. The supraclavicular nodes would also likely we larger and she would have felt for that. Thyroid cancer should always be tested with women who have had breast cancer and it has to be a thorough one too...not just the everyday lab one. Thyroid cancer is VERY treatable....likely show up in tumour markers though. I know the panic you feel when something isn't right. Our concerns should be addressed because of this.

That's a really common area to have pain and swelling with sinus congestion. I hope it eases soon.
