The MRI will be long, boring, and loud. Really loud. Don't let that freak you out; it's supposed to be loud. Otherwise, nothing much to it. You lay very still and wait for it to be over; it doesn't hurt or anything like that.

Surgery isn't horrible, either, really, if you have to have surgery. Obviously, you sleep through the surgery part, and they give you good pain meds for recovery. I remember being scared too, and thinking it would hurt afterward, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected--I actually cut my pain med dosage in half as soon as I got home from the hospital because I just didn't need as much as I had been prescribed... and I even went out for a short while with my husband to pick up a few things from town the day AFTER I got home from the hospital.

I’ve had several MRIs. When I had my first MRI for a torn knee ligament 25 years ago, I knew it would be loud. They gave me earplugs (you might want to bring your own). It muffled the worst of the noise, but there was just enough that it almost sounded like the scanner was talking like a robot--first it sounded like “sodium, sodium,” but then I could’ve sworn it was saying “bloody humans” over & over again. I wanted to giggle. Some MRI centers will give you headphones and your choice of music. You will hear humming, banging and knocking--but you won’t feel anything, and nothing will touch you. Remember that unlike a CT or X-ray scanner an MRI (to put it simply) measures emissions your body gives off--it doesn’t send any kind of radiation into you!
