Katy there are more organizations than just CN. I'll be back with something I put in the Charities thread on evaluation of the organizations that evaluate charities. LOL It's kind of like 'who's on first"

I remember now. After reviewing the other organizations that review charitable foundations, I decided not to include them. I only put in that other organizations exist.

In looking at how charities are reviewed, each reviewing group establishes their criteria for scoring. It was much more than I wanted to get into. I thought at the time someone could likely get a degree in it (they do). I do suggest that anyone using a particular reviewer study why a charity is rated the way it is. For example, as with CN an organization they review may not have a 4 star rating, but be an excellent organization. When I first studied CN a few years ago I used the Leukemia Lymphoma Society as my benchmark charity. CN rated that they were less than transparent. Well with some digging I found out that LLS simply didn't agree with what CN wanted so they didn't provided them the info. That dinged them on their star rating. LLS is one of the biggest charities in the world. They not only fund research, they give money grants to patients. My DH was awarded two 5000$ grants from the national chapter and two 150$ grants from the local chapter. My concern about the 2-3/4 rating for LLS just was dismissed b/c they gave direct help to DH.

It's all relative.

Katy, reading the different methodologies that the reviewing organizations use is just about the boringest thing anyone could do. I decided to stick with one. Since I already learned how CN worked I stuck with them. It was such a boring afternoon reading, I forgot it.

Travel, click on the link in the topic box and go to the charities thread. A charity has to have function for 5 years before it can listed on CN. Also, they're charities that b/c they are small and have a specific local purpose may excellent charities, may never seek to be on CN.

For example, We have a local charity started by a RO group. It mission is to provide support in only two counties. It provides grant money for non-medical expenses. The amount changes each year based on the available funds. The first year we were given 2000$ each=total 4000$. Nice. Yet you will not find them on any reviewing organizations evaluation page.

The total in grants the year we were dx'd was 9,150$, and every penny was used.

LLS had a less than a 4 star rating by CN and the local no where to be found in national reviews. The review organizations don't tell the complete story for all charities. That's an important concept in evaluating a charity.
