Lumpectomy & Christmas Band Concert!
It figures....my son, who is 11, is in his first band concert. They are putting on a special Christmas concert and have been working hard since school began. When is this concert? Why, it's on December 10th, of course! The day of my lumpectomy!
My lumpectomy is scheduled for first thing in the morning and they say if all goes well, I should be discharged by lunch time. His concert is at 7:00pm. I won't be able to go, will I? Or do you think I can make it? I won't be driving obviously, my husband will drive....and I'm sure I'll be loaded up on pain meds....but the thought of missing this is killing me.
What do y'all think? Will I have to skip it? Am I crazy for even THINKING about going?

Nobody?
I guess I'm crazy for even considering it! LOL! -
I was able to order out for dinner, serve it up and do the dishes the night of my lumpectomy (was discharged 4 pm, home by 4:30). I was warned I’d have tremendous fatigue (never did have it, not even after radiation) and wouldn’t want to go upstairs to sleep (I used that as an excuse, but could have climbed stairs). The next day I went out to dinner with my sister. I also was on only plain Tylenol. IMHO, as long as someone’s driving you and spotting you on stairs, and you have good pain control if you need it, go to your son’s concert. You’ll have stored up major karma for future use. (And if you get upper body pain & stiffness from the succinylcholine they use in the OR as a muscle relaxant, it doesn’t set in for at least 24 hrs).

You might be up to going since your surgery is early. I was uncomfortable after mine but I had a lot of tissue excised when my BS couldn't get clean margins and an ALND.
-
You might be able to make it. I went out to eat after both my lumpectomy and after the subsequent reexcision with ALND and drain. My surgeries were around 1 pm. Just don't let the pain meds wear off. Good luck

etnasgrl, I would think you can go. I could have gone back to work the day after my lumpectomy had I chosen to do so (doc gave me a week off so why not take it - I did!). I never needed the pain meds prescribed but if they give them to you and you have pain take them and then let your DH do all the work to get you to the concert. Maybe tell DS you will try to make it if able so he won't be overly disappointed if you cannot but I think you won't have a problem (just don't sit to far up front if possible in case you need to excuse yourself.

I think a lot will depend on if you have a drain or not. And someone to kick you and wake you up if you start nodding off.
Seriously, I don't think I could have gone to a concert after my lumpectomies. I had two drains and was pretty wobbly for about 24 hours. So you might want to make plans for either scenario and see how you feel at the time. -
Hey, thanks for responding!
I'll play it by ear and see how I feel right before the concert. If I think I can handle it, I'll go. If I do go and end up feeling too uncomfortable or tired, I'll just have DH walk me back to the truck and nap until the concert is over. I would REALLY like to try to give it a shot and go. It's important to him and he's been working so hard. I know it would mean a lot for mom to be there!
Thanks for letting me know that I'm not totally out of my mind for thinking about going! LOL!
