    Hi dolls-

After 1 regular mam, 1 3D mam, 1 diagnostic mam, and an ultrasound I was told by the radiologist that the lump appears to be fibroadenoma. I had 2 choices. have a needle biopsy or wait 6 months and retest. Would anyone consider waiting and why? Or why would you biopsy? I'm curious what others would choose. Also how can she seem so sure it's non cancerous by viewing the ultrasound? I really appreciate any feedback. I'm feeling stressed, confused, and afraid.

Ps: I decided to do the biopsy because I want to know for sure. However I have to wait until Jan 5th.

    Blessings-Sa

They have a very good idea because different types of masses have characteristic appearances when they have trained as long as a radiologist to recognize them. When they give you the option of rechecking for stability in six months they are estimating that it has a less than 3% chance of being cancer.

I went for a biopsy as my grandmother passed of breast cancer. After it was confirmed that it was fibroadenoma, I was checked every 6months for a year and then yearly u/s. I found the lump myself and because it was there long time before I found my cancerous lump I noticed the difference in the shape and hardness of the lump.

I think cancer appears in a different colour than benign conditions also the shape is a good indicator. So the radiologist know these criteria and in doubtful situations they would suggest other methods of testing. Mind you that in women with dense breasts it might be a bit harder but in my experience a second opinion (mammogram) is suggested.

Biopsy is the most certain way of identifying any lumps.

Good luck with the biopsy. (since it was far in the future, chances are it is benign)

I had a 4 cm by 3 cm fibroadenoma biopsied and removed from my right breast 4 yrs ago, and now am going back in for more mammograms, more ultra sounds and more biopsies. I would have it biopsied just so you have a little piece of mind.

The biopsy will give you peace of mind.

The doctors train for years and they have a lot of experience.  Doctors usually can "feel" whether something seems malignant or not with a breast exam.  This of course, is always combined with a diagnostic mammogram and sonogram.  The mammo and sono will show images.  The doctor will correlate the breast exam to the images from the mammo/sono.

The radiologist is trained to read the images.  The Radiologist can usually tell whether something appears malignant or benign.  Nothing is definite until a biopsy is performed.  However, many doctors will recommend waiting and watching if they feel that the lump is a fibroadenoma because fibroadenoma's are usually benign.

    Good luck.

I just joined and found your post right away. I have almost the same situation going on only I had my biopsy 5 years ago. I personally think it was well worth the peace of mind and knowledge to have my biopsy. Mine was quick and painless and left very little evidence it ever happened. I've read recently that sometimes these fibroadenomas can shrink away over time. Mine unfortunately has changed and grown over the past five years so I will have mine removed. I hope this helps.
