Surgery scheduled for December 4th and Im a mess
Hello Everyone, Im scheduled for my lumptectomy/partial mastectomy on Dec 4th...but on Dec 3rd at 2pm they are doing the sentinel node part. This has me more worried than the surgery itself.....a radiologist is doing it, and from what I am told it's painful.....anyone with any experience ?

So sorry you are joining us. My sentinel node biopsy was dome at the same time as my mastectomy. The day before, I went in and the injected the dye. Ask for the lidocaine cream. Apply to the nipple and surrounding area 1 hour before and cover with saran wrap.

MissV123 I am scheduled for surgery on the 4th too and have my sentinel node injection on the 3rd- I hope your surgery goes well, these women and men are a great source of support and information. Have you joined the December 2015 surgeries thread? I have read a lot of good info on the November 2015 thread in preparation. ml43333- I wasn't told about the lidocaine cream- will call BS at Hopkins tomorrow and ask. Thank you.

I was terrified about that sentinel node injection. It didn't hurt much at all. I'm sorry you are feeling scared. I remember those days well. Big hugs! Jen

i wasn't keen on the radioactive dye injection either. My breast wad pretty numb from having the wire placed, so I didn't feel as thing. The tech held my hand while the radiologist did the injections. I was nervous, but it wasn't bad at all

Thank you for the feedback....Ive had my diagnosis since the end of october so this has been a long, long , time to think....and wait, and try to get thru each day, work and home....and now the time has come and in a way Im relieved that it will be over soon.....hopefully if all goes well, radiation followed by chemo, perhaps just pills.....hormone... Im so glad I found this site.....Thank you All.....

MissV - I too am having surgery on the 4th - BMX. I understand you're anxiety over waiting. I got my diagnosis August 26th. The waiting is horrid. Coudn't be helped though. I had to have a few tests and see the plastics guy to determine which surgery I wanted. Then I ended up with a post op infectioin from my ductal excision and was hospitalized. Delay after delay.
I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy 10 years ago when I was diagnosed the first time and wish someone had told me about the injection. Believe it or not, my doctor never explained it to me. I had it done in the preop area and they didn't offer me any pain intervention. I'm having it again this time right before surgery, so I will be demanding something this time. Never heard of doing it the day before. No sure which I would prefer. Actually I do know....I would prefer none of it!!!!
Hope all goes well Friday - there are a couple of us going in that day for surgery. Glad we all found this incredible source of support.
-
Best of everything Bethl....I will be praying for you

MissV123 Please don't worry about the sentinel node injection. I drove to NYC alone to get it done and it was a breeze. Took seconds and IMO not painful at all. You have enough to worry about and that should not be one of them. I understand your anxiety but I hope I have helped relieve it. Good luck and keep us posted.....

I too am scheduled for surgery on Dec. 4. I will have the sentinel node done at the same time. I am also a mess. I don't sleep so I have read and searched this site all night long. It has helped, and I think that it will be a definite source of support in the future. Praying for good results for all of us!! At least it does help to know we are not alone!

MissV and teacher, would you ladies like me to add you to the December surgeries list?
-
MissV - I'll be praying for you too! Definintely visit the December surgery page.
dtad - maybe it makes a difference where the injection is placed. You were lucky to have the injection painless. I was not, nor was a good friend of mine. I'll do whatever I need to do, kind of don't have a choice... but hoping for less pain this time. Lidocaine cream couldn't hurt. Not trying to scare anyone, just want to make sure they utilize any intervention beforehand just to minimize the discomfort.

MissV - I had my sentinel node removed at the time of my lumpectomy and symmetry. The test to locate the node, as well as the removal itself resulted in little to no pain. I have found that the anticipation of the procedure was worse than the actual surgery. I will be thinking of you.

That would be great Mrs Green Jeans.....thank you... -
Yes, thank you! Longest three weeks of my life!

Wow...Friday, 12/4, seems to be a popular day for bc surgery. To all joining in a surgery suite tomorrow, all of the best and nothing of the bad. We can get through these days if we stick together, keep laughing, and remember just how strong we really are.
Stand Strong.

hope all went well for you and you are now on your road to a full recovery! Sending positive thoughts and prayers to you

Best of luck to those heading into surgery tomorrow. Waking up with it behind you is a great feeling. Nurses are so very kind
