Seeing a surgeon today
Hi, my name is Amy. I was dx last Monday with IDC. The mass was found on a routine mammogram. It's not palpable as it's deep in center of my breast, near the chest wall. The radiologist said the tumor was ~2cm, grade 1 and that I as ER+ PR+. Given the thanksgiving holiday the surgeon my primary wanted me to see was out of the office last week. So today I see her for what I assume is a consultation as they are squeezing me in between patients. I trust my primary's call on waiting for this surgeon as she has just gone through the same thing, and used this surgeon who she said was amazing. Thankfully for her, she had no node involvement. I'm hoping for the same thing.
We told our kids on Wed. I have a son who just turned 12 and a daughter who will be 14 in March. That was the hardest thing I ever had to do.
I'd welcome any positive thoughts you might send my way. I tend to be an optimistic person which has helped me a lot the last week. I'm worried more about my husband, who is a "fixer" and feels totally helpless in all this.

Here are some positive thoughts for you (think think think in your direction)! Grade 1 is good, that indicates a less aggressive form, so be glad about that part. Once you get more info make your diagnosis and treatment part of your profile public so others can see what you are working through, and you may get better feedback from people with similar situations. There are many threads here that you will find helpful, lots of information. Good luck and I am glad you found this place, it is a good spot to land when you need friends who get it.

Hi Amy, I got the results from my biopsy Nov 24, bad news no mass but DCIS and IDC, I am going to see a surgeon on Wenesday.
-
You didn't say, but did you have a biopsy already?
-
Sorry, Yes I had a biopsy on my left breast on 11/19. Got the results last monday. Saw the surgeon today. They want to do a MRI w/dye as a next step. I guess my breasts are very dense and they want to rule out any additional cancer, so they'll do both breasts. The surgeon said it's not uncommon to have follow up U/S as the MRI picks up everything. She said there's a chance that I'd have additional biopsies. I'm also seeing the genetic counsellor on Monday. I got a copy of the path report. Still digesting it, but under final diagnosis it says:
- Invasive ductal carcinoma
Notitngham grade 1 (tubules: 2, Nuclear: 2, Mitoses: 1)
Longest length of invasive carcinoma, 8mm; 75% of submitted tissue.
- Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) intermediate nuclear grade, cribriform type.
(so I guess that means I have both? When the Radiologist called he only mentioned the IDC)
My ER and PR were both 100%. Haven't heard on the HER2 status yet. I won't be staged until the tumor is out, I suppose.
I see the surgeon again after the MRI.

you're scores look very good. I would guess that you will be a candidate for LX, radiation, and hormone suppression only, unless your Oncotype comes back high (>30). MRI is the logical next step for most of us after mammo & US, to confirm or deny any other tumors.
It is very common to have IDC & DCIS in the same tumor. Treatment is based on the more invasive cancer (IDC). Mine was like that. Unfortunately, i am ER+/PR-,which is more aggressive, so I'm getting chemo and a BMX after that.
Good luck with the surgeon. I say it's better to know what you're dealng with and make a plan, than to not know.

I totally agree with Poodles. If there's any good news in cancer, you've probably got it. You caught this very early. Get all the information you can.

Hi Amy, Sorry you're here but your situation does sound favorable so far. My situation was much the same one year ago! My tumor was about the same size as yours and my lumpectomy was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving 2014. I know this time is very terrifying and can just seem crazy but once you get a plan in place and get moving forward it will be manageable. I promise. FWIW, a year later, I am just taking my tamoxifen and rolling forward. Hugs to you!

Thanks for all the replies. I'm feeling strangely calm. I liked the surgeon a lot and feel like I'm in good hands. She also was the surgeon for my primary care Dr., who received the same dx as me last July. Thankfully, she had no node involvement. She had a lumpectomy, radiation therapy and hormone suppression, and is back at work full time. I'm hoping for the same. The 2 nurse navigators have been really helpful, and caring.
I live in the Chicagoland and my whole family is in Boston. I'm going home this weekend to see my Mom and have dinner with my Sisters. I'm really looking forward to that!
Thanks again for taking the time to reply and sharing your wisdom.
