Needle Biopsy Questions

Hey guys,

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to ask, but they're calling me sometime this week to set up a needle biopsy for me. I know I've seen a bit (in passing) about the needle biopsy and how there's a lot of discomfort from having to be still, face down, for so long. I was wondering if you all had any tips or things to make the experience a bit more comfortable? I know I can ask the doc this too, but they're SO backed up because of the recent holiday, so I figured I'd get as prepared as I can before I even schedule the biopsy. Are you typically able to drive yourself home? Is there a certain bra I should be wearing afterwards (or no bra at all) (Sorry if these are dumb questions, ha, I just really have no idea what to expect). Also, how sore should I expect to be? I have a wedding to go to next Friday, so if I'm going to be insanely sore, I'm wondering if I should schedule the biopsy for the week after instead (not letting this ruin the one fun thing going on in the midst of this madness).

Idk if this helps at all but it's a needle biopsy for birads4a microcalcs. Bra size 34C. Other than this, I am a fit, healthy, 26yo.

Hi there. Try to keep in mind that most breast lumps are benign. That being said IMO you should not go alone. You might be ok to drive but having someone there to support you would be really helpful. You will be sore and bruised so any bra that is comfortable will be fine. I would not reschedule. Just get it over with and you will be fine for the wedding. I had 5 biopsies and I did not think they were bad at all. Good luck and keep us posted....

I was fine driving. I've seen quite a few women here who go back to work after. I was only very mildly sore-not big deal. You aren't given anything but local numbing medication. The biopsy is really not bad. I never had anyone with me for any of my procedures except the surgical biopsy. I didn't see any reason for someone to have to wait for two hours in a waiting room for something that is a very minor procedure. They can't go in the procedure room with you.

I went to my biopsy alone, right after work.  I was there for a couple of hours, but it was an ultrasound guided hollow core needle biopsy, so it was performed while I was laying on my back with a pillow behind me.  I wore a regular bra with a small ice pack in it, and I went to work the next day - fairly physical job in the hospital where I didn't sit much.  I did not have any problems with soreness, and no limitations other than no aspirin, did not wear a special bra.

I was laying on my side for my FNBs. The 'worst' was the Dr injecting the lidocaine (or whatever he used to numb). Did feel a bit of 'pressure' but no pain other than when he saw another area that was just outside of the numbed area that he wanted to do also. He said it might be a bit 'ouchy' to do or he could numb that area and then go back in from another site. To me, it made sense to just go ahead. It was a bit 'ouchy' but no worse than a blood draw.

I did not have any bruising or pain from it. A bandaide was put over the needle site and I took it off about an hour later. I mowed a yard later that afternoon with my push mower, worked the horses and did all barn chores that night. No problems at all - possibly a little tender but nothing needing OTC Tylenol. Wore my usual bras.

I drove myself to all my appts - scans/tests/biopsies, Dr appts, 16 Chemo (4 DD A/C and 12 weekly Taxol) and 25 rads. My choice. Hubby did take me to my port implant as hospital requires someone else to drive you away and Son picked me up after UMX - again hospital rules - but I was driving the next day.

Get as much input as you can but do not expect the worst that you're told. It is much more common for those who say they had 'bad' experiences to post (about anything) than those of us who didn't. We are each so unique and do have very varying experiences - a few very bad but definitely not all.

(I was 63, 34 C (or 36 B depending on the bra), never smoker, not overweight, very fit/active, only health issues were arthritis in upper back and osteopenia.)

I've had 5 core biopsies...same feedback as Melissa. I was fine to drive, threw the ice packs in my bra and went back to work. I did not bring anyone with me.

I had a needle biopsy and was on my back. When I looked up the procedure somebody said be prepared for the sound. Its a loud click. They gave me an ice pack, I drove myself to work and worked. I didn't feel any pain.

I had a friend drive me, as I had taken a half-tab of valium and didn’t want to drive home impaired. They did say not to drive there & back, but to take a taxi if there wasn’t anyone there to drive. Momentary sting of a very fine needle, then totally numb. Lay on my side (propped up with plenty of pillows. Heard the clicks of the core-biopsy “gun” but didn’t even feel pressure. Wore a soft-cup bra with room for the little ice pack they stuffed in there. No painkiller necessary. Did stay home so I could ice on & off every hour but felt well enough to drive to dinner that night. Not even so much as a bruise--but I did refrain from taking aspirin, NSAIDs, herbs or fish oil for a week before & 3 days after.

Thank you SO much for this! My biopsy is scheduled for the 15th. They haven't made me a super high priority because they "don't think it's going to be anything," which gives my mother great relief, but I'm still nervous. It's either going to be a great Christmas or a somber one. Either way, thank you for taking the time out to offer up some advice. It's greatly appreciated. I'll update after the biopsy.

Still say you should not go alone. I think its important to have someone with you for anything diagnostic.....

dtad - My boyfriend is going to be going with me :) I didn't want to put him out since the hospital is 2.5 hours away from us, but he's insisting... and I'm not going to fight him on it haha. If it means I can take a Xanax to calm down, I'll happily allow him to drive.

Now to get through the next 13 days of waiting...

dtad - For some it may be what is the best for some to have someone with you - especially if going to take drugs that effect the ability to drive or concentrate. That is not true for all of us though. We are each unique and not the same 'things' are what is best for all of us. I have not taken anyone with me for any appts, tests/scans or TXs. I'm a big old (use whatever word you want to) who can and will take care of myself. I do not want my loved ones sitting in a facility where they can't help but fret.

All of my Drs knew/know that I drive myself and do not bring anyone with me and all were/are fine with that.

We each need to do what is best for us and not do what anyone else tells us we should do because that's what works for them.

I had an ultra sound guided core needle biopsy and it went very smoothly, with no issues.
I was lying on my back, not face down.
The doctor warned me that the shot to numb my breast might pinch or hurt, but it didn't. I felt absolutely nothing. I felt nothing during the biopsy itself either and it was over fairly quickly. (About 10 minutes.)

Afterwards, I wore a sports bra and that was perfect. It kept the girls supported, so there was no jiggling around. I was a little sore once the numbness wore off, but not terribly so. Nothing an Advil couldn't handle. I kept the bandage on for 3 days as directed and once I took them off, I had a bruise but it wasn't horrible.
This was the first week of November. Still today, you can see a red mark where the core needle entered my skin, but it's not painful.

Overall, the biopsy experience was just fine. I have no complaints! And I'm sure yours will go just as well!

(Edited to add....my husband was going to go with me, but he ended up needing emergency gallbladder surgery that day, so I went alone. I had absolutely no problems driving home at all, other than worrying about him! LOL!)

I posted this on another one of my threads accidentally. Whoops!

Had my biopsy yesterday. It was not nearly as bad as I thought I was going to be. I was sitting up the whole time, which was great. The women tending to me were incredible. Sore today and some bruising, obviously, but it's the same kind of "sore" I feel after a normal mammogram. It basically felt like getting a VERY fast tattoo. After the numbing meds, honestly, the most uncomfortable thing about it was that my leg was falling asleep (can't complain if that's the most uncomfortable part haha).

It was a LITTLE confusing (in a good way) because the two radiologists didn't even want to do the biopsy (So, I've had one radiologist and surgeon say that I 100% NEED a full lumpectomy. I had the most recent surgeon say, she'd prefer to wait but will do the biopsy for peace of mind and I have her two radiologists telling me that this is basically ridiculous. My mind was all over the place). I told them my last doctor told me that it looked like a rock was smashed in my breast with all of the calcifications. The two radiologists, mammogram tech, and the nurse were all very angry with my previous radiologist. They showed me the scans. They were like, "these are SO faint that we can barely see them and are in no distinguishable pattern at all." The radiologist said the only reason I'm even at the biopsy point is because another doctor suggested it and I went through nine months of stress and anxiety, so they simply can't turn me away now. She did say if I'd rather not do the biopsy, she'd be 100% okay with it because she said she's almost positive that this is benign and that she hates it when doctors put the fear of God into girls in their 20s. I told her I wish I would have gone to her first, however, considering it's already been nine months, I don't think I can do another six months of waiting. I'd rather just know. Anyway, they said I should have my results on Friday at the latest. I took a Xanax the second I got into the room (which helped greatly. If any biopsy newbies are reading this and do suffer from anxiety, I really recommend it. It made it so much easier). I did end up having someone drive me: My FIANCÉ!! (I got engaged last Thursday). Hopefully, Friday's results will be a wonderful engagement present.

Fingers crossed for B9 results and thank ya'll so much for your biopsy tips! It was so helpful knowing what to expect. I'll keep you guys posted.

I'M FINE! B9!!! B9!!! B9!!! They said it's benign fibrocystic breast changes. Nothing there. Followup mammo in May.

    Hello,

So happy for you. Peace of mind is invaluable. I'm going back in Jan. Small hard moveable lump in breast, probably fat necrosis, but prefer to check.

It gets easier with time, I promise.

I had a core needle biopsy done Tuesday where they took about 6 tissue samples from a mass they finally found using 3D imaging tool. Got a call Friday telling me I need to meet with breast surgeon asap so scheduled an appt today at 1:15. They couldn't tell me anymore as the Dr had already left for the day. Why would I have to meet with surgeon? I'm freaking out!!
