So true!! ;o)
-
I had indoor plants until I adopted Mocca, a cat who loved salad. She ate half an African violet on the table (from the back), chewed a mother-in-law's tongue to bits (supposedly poisonous) and sampled everything else. We have a grow light set up in the basement on a timer and grow starts from seeds there. I have an artificial orchid from my desk at work in the living room - real ones are deathly poisonous to cats. Amaryllis and lilies are deadly and the list goes on.
-
Teka doesn't try to eat the african violets on the kitchen window sill. However, she does try to drink out of a flower pot saucer on the living room bow window sill. There's plant food in the water!
I'll be keeping an apple blossom amaryllis on top of the refrigerator during X-mas. I plan to post a photo.

Twohobbies- snow! We got our first snowfall this week too. That being said, I still have some plants that have not yet froze! The rest of the leaves are coming down now though, so I will be doing some raking tomorrow.
-
TwoHobbies- those photos are spectacular! We are still fairly moderate here in southern Oregon. It's crisp and cool, but sunny with no wind. Enjoying my coffee, looking out and listening to the birds and some other animals I can hear on a nearby farm when it's quiet. My furry friends have also found the perfect blend of indoor/outdoor appreciation. The screen door is open, and they venture out for a bit, then come back in to keep me company.
-
it was pleasant here too and my geraniums and dianthus still had blooms in my pots. I took them to the garage last night. It was beautiful this morning but after two branches broken off my magnolia and the roof over my deck has collapsed, it's now not so idyllic! Not to mention the sore muscles I'll have tomorrow from clearing the drive twice. I'm ready to curl up in Jackbirdie's sunny window!
I had a dog who ate every leaf off my pathos one time it was a six foot vine. I called poison control where they nicely told me this line was for humans! She survived anyway.
-
TwoHobbies- there's always a sunny window here for a friend. 🙋

Wishing everyone a good Thanksgiving for those celebrating here in the US.
Here is a photo from my autumn blaze oak that is in the last of it's fall color change.
-
Beautiful, Jazzy.
I just popped in to say Happy Thanksgiving to my gardening friends before I get started on that Turkey.
-
I always enjoy the lovely photos!!!! Also the chitchat. ;o)
Maybe next week inches of snow on the ground.
The cute skunk that eats bird seed from the ground near our bedroom window hasn't been around for a few cold nights.
Thanksgiving breakfast while watching the deer grazing in the backyard.
I also loved watching a fox pouncing on field mice in a nearby field during the summer.
Years ago in the same nearby field a mother black bear with 3 cubs were eating apples when Daughter tried to sneak up for a closer look at the cubs. We got her back before the mother got worked up. I could only think of the bear scene from the movie *Old Yeller*.

Happy Thanksgiving to all here. I too, enjoy the photos and chit chat. A great year-long distraction! Be well and peaceful everyone

Teka, two mornings on my way to work in the winter wonderland I saw two beautiful deer. It was so picturesque but I didn't want to pull over and get stuck in the snow to take a picture. Speaking of missing good pictures, I'm so happy, I saw a fox this morning. But I didn't get a picture because I had no camera handy. We've had foxes in our neighborhood for three plus years. One summer we had three practically living in our back yard. They would sleep under my hedge, play on my deck. Then I saw animal control taking one away! I was so mad, because they never hurt anything. I have a small dog and if he saw them he would chase them and they'd run. So I felt so glad to see one running free in the neighborhood. They are so pretty and playful and fun to watch.
In our snow storm, we lost some branches for our magnolia, so I cut some off and put in a vase hoping to force the blooms. However, now I read they may need some more weeks of cold, so I'm not sure if it will work or not. I thought about putting the vase outside for a while but water would ice up and it might not be good for the branches to be dry so I think I'll try it anyway and see if they bloom.

saw this fellow sitting under my neighbor's apple tree
-
Oh my, now that I would be a little more nervous to see, being a dog owner, but its still an exciting and beautiful sighting anyway.
-
Flavia- I love that photo! Probably enjoyed some apples on the ground too?
-
Jazzy, Yes, there has been a ton of fruit this year, apples and pears litter the ground, bringing in all kinds of wildlife.
-
Nice pix Flavia. We saw four black bears at the Okefenokee Swamp reserve yesterday including a mama and her two cubs. They moved to fast to photograph though.

Speaking of bear cubs, in 2014, we were coming home to Ohio from Virginia Beach and drove through part of the Shenandoah National Forest on Skyline Drive. It is the most breathtaking scenery I've ever seen. Dh and ds knew how much it meant to me, but I was joking, "I just whoosh I'd see a bear". Sure enough, around one beautiful bend we saw two adorable bear cubs scurrying across the road. We slowed down and enjoyed the show and I felt so lucky to see them like that.

- I love bear stories! Here's mine. A couple of years ago my family was staying at a little cabin by the river in Red River, New Mexico. ( The Texas Alps.) The owner had warned us about bears in the area, given us all the tips, "a fed bear is a dead bear," etc. We were out for the day and just got back in time to find the owner on our porch with a rifle and a walkie talkie - the porch was a mess - chairs and table overturned, kids treasures scattered, shoes and rain gear drug through mud - we just missed a mother bear and her cub tearing through the camp! The kids thought it was great and were sorry we had missed it. I was, too, until I thought about it. And the bears were fine. They were chased back up the hill to the area where their den was. For an Air Force brat, this was incredible! Lind

Booklady- I know Red River well and yes, quite the hang out for the Texas crowd. Great bear story.
I wanted to share my holiday card with all of you here on this lovely gardening thread. I have so enjoyed sharing the photos and stories here about our gardening passion.
This photo was taken in northern NM at sunrise last year during Christmas weekend. May you have peace this holiday season, and good health in the New Year!
-
having an insomnia night so what a beautiful photo and sentiment to end my day with. That is one of my favorite places on earth. Good night Lind

Anyone else having really wacky weather? I'm in SW New York, in the foothills of the Appalachians. By now it should be pretty chilly (30's at least), yet tomorrow it's supposed to get up to 65. My poor plants don't know which way to jump. Should cool off a bit next week.
-
Magical Bean- it is pouring here today. Rain in the valley, snow in the mountains, but we love it! I hear it is so mild back east. Warmer in some parts of New England than here? El Ninjo doing it's thing.....
Here is a view from the mountains nearby today after the snow. I expect they are getting more tonight too!
-
Love that pic, Jazzy. Makes me whine though, because I love the snow and we have a dandelion growing in the lawn instead. We may get freezing rain later in the week. Till then, I'll keep sleeping with my window open...in NY....in December!!!!!
-
Same here with weird weather. Running AC for humidity. Toreador watches and severe thunderstorms forecasted for 2am. 78 here today. We had 1 freeze before Thanksgiving. I have a confused Bluebonnet growing in my garden and others coming up. Feliz Navidad! Linda
-
That's TORNADO not Toreador, although I'd rather have toreador watches
-
Booklady: Toreador watches? would we get to listen to earworm arias from Carmen? Unseasonably warm up here too, though no weather alerts. I'm starting to worry about my roses getting confused.
