Change in diet?

I was just diagnosed the beginning of this month. I'm also overweight and have been most of my adult life. (I'm 41) Prior to the diagnosis, I was a member of Weight Watchers and had gone from 252 to where I am currently, 228.
I like Weight Watchers, but I've been doing a lot of research on foods to eat/avoid when diagnosed with breast cancer. I'm learning that keeping your fat intake at 20% or less is a good thing, am I right on that?

I'm going to approach this NOT as a diet, but as a lifestyle change, to get and stay healthy. Lots of fruits and veggies, less red meat, more chicken and fish and keep fats at 20% or less.
I also walk every day for exercise and will continue with that as I enjoy it and it's good exercise.

Does my plan seem right? Any tips or advice?

etnasgrl, sorry you are on this journey but happy you are involved here on BCo for support. You are on the right track especially about not thinking of it as a diet but a lifestyle change. Diets do not work! A change in attitude toward food does.

Not sure about the 20% rule as I don't measure my fat intake (I'm too lazy to go that far). Lots of veggies, yes. Fruit, yes but in moderation and check the natural sugar in them. I strongly suggest to cut back or eliminate added sugar (regular and diet soda, store bought fruit juice, desserts). Watch your carbs (white flour, bread, potatoes, pasta). Eliminate soda (regular and diet). Most important, check labels for sugar and salt content especially.

Walking is great exercise, keep it up.

I've been hearing a lot about sugar. I've got such a sweet tooth, so that will be a tough one....but I need to get healthy and do everything that I can to avoid a recurrence! If that means watching my sugar intake, so be it.
    Thanks for your response patoo!

    Smile
