How to help my sister decide on type of reconstruction

hi my sister is 41 and was diagnosed with stage 2 invasive cancer in her right breast and also tested positive for the BRCA1 gene. She's having a double mastectomy next week and knows that she also wants to have reconstruction but is agonizing over the flap or implants. I'm trying to help weigh her options, and figure out the pros and cons of both. I'm also trying to prepare for what she's going to endure over the next few months. I'm not sure what type of treatment she'll need either. How does anyone decide this, it seems so difficult. She has a 7 & 9 yr old and will also opt to have her ovaries removed. Any input would be helpful, thank you.

    Hello Myhappyplace,

We're so sorry to hear about your sister but we're super glad that you've found this site to support you.

Has your sister received her Hormonal status yet? Whether she is postive or negative will impact her treatment options.

You might like to have a read through this and maybe go through it with your sister: Understanding your Pathology Report

Regarding reconstruction options, you can read up on the pros and cons of each here: Implant Reconstruction and Flap Reconstruction.

Also, check out the Reconstruction Forum for more discussions on this topic.

    We hope this helps!

Sending our best wishes to you and your sister.

    The Mods.

    Hi,

You can use the search function to find threads on every type of recon.there is great depth of personal experience on those threads. Your friend will have to weigh the pros and cons as they relate to her personal circumstances. Yes, her treatment after surgery may factor into her decision. Has she had a chance to consult with a plastic surgeon yet? I would recommend finding one who has a great deal of experience with recon, not cosmetic enhancement. Wishing your friend the best.

Sorry, I just realized you were asking for your sister (too much holiday prep on the brain:
