Genetic Testing!!

My mother was diagnosed with IDC when she was 42.
I was just diagnosed with IDC two weeks ago and I'm 41.

My surgical oncologist was leaning pretty heavily on a genetic connection, so she had me take genetic testing so we would know what route of treatment to take.
If negative, I would go with a lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy. (This is the course of treatment that I really wanted to take.)
If positive, I would go with a bilateral mastectomy, followed by immediate reconstruction. (Not what I want, but will do what I need to do in order to save my life.)

I've been stressing over the results of this test since the day they drew blood. I was trying to research the different reconstruction options and was getting so overwhelmed and even more stressed, trying to determine which option would be best for me.

Well, MD Anderson just called me about an hour ago to let me know that the results are in.
They are NEGATIVE!!!! Praise God!!!!

Happy

My lumpectomy is scheduled for December 10th. I am MORE than ready to move forward!!

That is brilliant! I hated the genetic testing part, it was the worst for me - sounds like it was for you too. Glad you got a good result.

Englishmummy....It absolutely was the worst! The stress of trying to determine which options would be best for me was crazy!
You get SO much info and such a short amount of time to figure it all out. Makes my head spin! LOL!

I hear ya! I could deal with the dx, the treatment plan, the surgery but the genetics nearly broke my spirit:  I was made to feel defective (hope that's not the case for everyone). My team was so sure mine would be positive (because of Bilateral BC) but it wasn't, we have a largish female dominated family with no history so my heart told me it wasn't, I felt it was just bad luck but what did I know? They were the Dr's and that really played on my soul. Some people go back for more testing as they recognize more genes, but right now I think I am never doing that again!
Hope you can stop spinning for a bit and take a few for yourself before your lumpy on the 10th.

etnasgrl: Woohoo for you! Congratulations...what a huge relief.

I went through this recently, too, and found it terribly stressful. Had multigene panel test and came up negative for BRCA 1/2 and mutations in all other genes tested. Process delayed treatment decision and my sentinel node biopsy. Like you, I am so so ready to move forward...had lumpectomy two months ago and just had SNB today. If node negative, can start radiation and Tamoxifen. Omigosh just want to get through this part. Yay for you!

Thanks everyone! I'm so glad to hear that your genetic testing was negative as well Kimm992 and Girl53, that's great news!!
In my opinion, that genetic testing is such an important part of this and knowing it's negative is a HUGE relief. For the first time since my diagnosis, I feel like I can breathe!
