Just Diagnosed DCIS, Scared, Sleepless & Confused!

I am wide awake at 5 am maybe had 3 hours sleep. It has been such a stressful week! I am one month shy of being 42. Procrastinated the 1st mammo & just had 1st one last Monday, Oct 12, followed by biopsy that Friday to yesterday got the diagnosis I knew was coming!

All started with seeing microcalcifications. They were in a linear branching configuration. After just knowing that & my research I just knew so I prepared myself before the call but was I prepared!? I am thinking NO. Friends advised me to schedule appt with breast surgeon while I was waiting on results. Luckily I saw nurse practitioner of surgeon yesterday after getting the "phone call."

I have DCIS, stage 0. Positive for both hormones. I am new at these new words that have been foreign to me & this is all a blur! I need get breast MRI then see actual surgeon. In this week of preparing & having 2 friends going through this at same time, I am leaning on double masectomy. It is early but I am not negotiating with this Cancer! I have 2 beautiful daughters 21 & 13. We are all so scared!!

I am so glad I came across this forum! I have many sleepless nights ahead! My head is spinning & stomach is sick.

The first time in my life I truly have felt such FEAR!

I just don't know what to do!

Jersey, First take a breath, a good deep breath. DCIS is very treatable especially when found early. Please talk with your docs, nurses and everyone else invested in your care. You don't mention family history? Being positive for both ER & PR is a good thing in my mind (meaning there are options).

As for double mastectomy, my own opinion is that a mastectomy can always be done later if needed. Again, a lot depends on the opinions of your docs, and even a second opinion.

My head was spinning too when I got the call. Now that it's behind me I am fine with all my treatments, but I was on the "just take 'em off" road too.

Don't forget to breath and hug your girls (the daughters!)

    Renee,

I am 41 so I completely understand your fear for you and your girls (my children are 12,11 & 8) unfortunately, my bilateral BC was not DCIS - although that was in there too, it was already invasive. The whole deal is very scary but it does get better with time and a plan. You can do this! Stay strong as hard as it is. You will feel differently and things will become clearer. There are many different trains of thought on this {DCIS} now, including watch and wait (not at all suggesting you do that....just pointing out things are now changing).  http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/29/health/a-breast-cancer-surgeon-who-keeps-challenging-the-status-quo.html?_r=0  in certain parts of the world it is viewed differently, too. So take a deep breath and know you really can do this. I am just over 4 mths out of my DX and already life is getting back to normal - I had a BMX and don't regret, I doubt I ever will but that is not the right road for everyone. Find a good surgeon, weigh your options and go forward: strong and empowered.

Many ladies on here ask their Dr.s for something to help with the initial shock, perhaps that is something that you may consider? Or perhaps meditation if you are med-adversed (I am:)  Losing sleep is no good for healing or sanity. Be kind to yourself.

A fellow member here at BC.org has a Layperson's guide to DCIS you can find it here, it is really good information https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/68/topics/790992?page=7#post_4202139

Wishing you lots of love and luck. Hugs.Laura x

Hang in there Jersey!!! I too was diagnosed with DCIS, after two lumpectomies I decided to go with a mastectomy. Currently working on my reconstruction YAY NEW BOOB!!! Its been a tough year but I can now say I'm very happy with my decision because I don't have to do radiation or any other treatment. Talk to your surgeons, and doctors and get as much info as you can before you make your decision. And yes BREATH!!!

been where you are, it does get easier once you get everything lined up. I too wanted a double mastectomy at the beginning but I realized right then was not the time make that decision. There is no increase in survivability by doing a bmx, just do you know. You may feel better about doing it and that is fine, but there is no evidence it will help you live longer mostly because DCIS is highly survivable itself regardless of treatment.

Hang in there and if the anxiety gets too bad ask for some Xanax or something. It will help you sleep better :)

Honey, I feel your pain! Please start by taking a deep breath! Be careful, pray, conduct research, and wait till you feel comfortable with your decision. You sound exactly like I did when I got the same diagnosis as you. I was given two options, biopsy with radiation, or mastectomy. I, like you, first leaned toward a unilateral MX, to be RID of cancer. However, after having my two mammograms, an ultrasound (both revealing a Category 5 malignancy), a needle biopsy (totally clean!), and an excisional biopsy (DCIS, Stage 0), my surgeon wanted to do yet another biopsy to get clean margins. After all the divergent results, I was confused and needed time to think.

I had, by that time, spent much time researching DCIS on the Internet, and discovered a lot of recent literature about doctors over-treating DCIS. I opted to slow down and have a 2nd opinion. I heard from the 2nd opinion ONE WEEK before my MX and reconst. was scheduled. I found out that I do NOT have cancer. I have a complex sclerosing breast lesion instead, which is a benign condition, caused by hardening of breast tissue. It occurs over time. I came SO close to having unnecessary major surgery! This doesn't happen often, but it did happen to me, and is worth taking time to check out.

    God bless!!

the article you referenced from the NY Times is one of the articles that I found. I also read the study published in JAMA. It is the largest study ever done on DCIS. Certainly relevant and thought-provolking!

    AnneeS,

Wow!!!! Well at this point I have genetic counseling next Wed & miraculously an appointment with breast surgeon for consult on Thursday.I guess further testing is where we are going. I just take it one step at a time!

Also I dont know what your situation was. I have microcalcifications. They are in a linear branching configuration. As I was told some were removed from biopsy. They then want to do MRI see how many still in there.

Thank you for your post!! 😊

Hi everyone. I like many of you was recently diagnosed (October 15th) with DCIS comedo type with necrosis, nuclear grade 3 ER and PR positive. I just had MRI on Thursday and am meeting with breast surgeon and plastic surgeon next Wednesday. The breast surgeon has told me prior to the MRI that most likely a lumpectomy would be the best course of action, but that PS could do a reduction if I wanted. "Yes! Of course I do! Was my reply. Carrying these DD's around all day is exhausting. The thing that I'm not too happy about is that he said the PS would do the reduction in the breast that was getting the lumpectomy that day, but that I should wait 6 months to do the other breast, because of changes in breast size due to radiation. Have any of you ladies had any similar situations? I would really like to do them both at the same time and be done with it. Also, I see lots of different information about how much time I will need to take off from work. I'm a preschool teacher, so lots of lifting of 4 year olds. Thanks, and Jersey, hang in there and breathe!

I can understand the reason they want to wait to do a reduction on the side you will be having radiation. There is a certain amount of swelling and if your intent is to have both sides matching....you will need to give a bit of time

to be honest, I never considered a mastectomy for my DCIS and when I asked my BS who is a really good one in NJ, she said she did not know why folks rush to a mastectomy for DCIS

stay cool, lumpectomies are minor surgery (to me at least as I was home in hours) but a mastectomy is a much bigger surgery with longer healing

oh yeah, my diagnosis was same as you and I am clean 7 years out

    PattyMeg,

Looks like we in a similiar situation! I havent had MRI yet. Wed I am seeing Oncologist & Genetic counselor then Thursday seeing BS. I am taking it day by day but can tell you that the person who never cries is crying all the time now! 😞

I am fearing what is the best choice for me. If my gene test is positive than it a no brainer on bilateral masectomy.

Can't help you with the DD's situation as I am only an A! 😁

    Wish you luck & hugs!!!!!

JerseyRenee, let me know how things go with your doctors on Wednesday and I will do the same. It's good to have other women to talk to who are going through the same thing. I've been trying to be super cheerful for my family, and I am an optimist by nature, but I confess, I had a good cry in the shower the other day, and felt much better for it. Sending love your way, Patty

    proudtospin,

Where abouts in Jersey are you?

    My fear is it recurring?

On my Pathology report it states:

Left breast 2:00 DCIS of intermediate nuclear grade with necrosis, calcifications & extension into lobules. Displaying cribiform & solid patterns. Fibroadenoma.

    ER positive 90%

    PR positive 90%

I had lumpectomy for DCIS a week ago tomorrow. After dx by stereotactic bx, I also had MRI, followed by 2 MRI guided bx for 2 other suspicious areas (which turned out not to be cancers). My surgeon gave me detailed information about recurrence rate with lumpectomy, radiation and hormonal treatment. S lumpectomy, with both treatment options having 5-8% recurrence rate.  I opted for lumpectomy and pray for total healing with additional treatment.

Jersey, I don't blame you for having genetic testing. I don't meet criteria for testing due to fact that my cancer was diagnosed when I was post-menopausal.  It's better to know if you are BRCA positive before making final decisions about your treatment. Keep us posted on your plan of action and like others have said, "Breathe."   There is great support here.

    Fearless195:

I will be thinking of you & sending you healing prayers!!! I got my MRI done almost 2 weeks ago & heard nothing. I assume they didnt find anymore concerns. I honestly have put it on hold until after holidays. My Nurse Navigator said since DCIS it fine & I need to advocate for myself. Havent received gene test results yet.

    Balthus:

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. This is a great place to be for support!! Thinking of you!!

JerseyRenee: I would be asking about the MRI results. I would be going crazy without answers.. They are probably OK or you would most likely have heard from someone, but very odd that you haven't been notified. I have appointments with my surgeon each time I have had a procedure completed for her to share the results with me.

Balthus: Sorry to hear about your diagnosis also. You are in the right place. This site offers so much information and support for one another. Keep us posted on your treatment plan.

I'm Feeling kind of down today. I went for my post-op appointment this morning after last Tuesday's lumpectomy. My incision is healing without problems, but the path report wasn't what I wanted to hear. More cancer cells were found in the margins. The estimated size of what was examined is at least 10mm with DCIS present in multiple blocks of tissue. My surgeon said there could be spotty areas of DCIS in other parts of the breast. So now I am scheduled for additional surgery on Dec. 2. In addition, my surgeon also wants to keep a close watch on the benign tumor (PASH) that she excised from the other breast. It is now showing signs of "atypia" (atypical lobular hyperplasia) and there are micro-calcifications within that tissue. She says that can be a pre-cursor and can increase my risk of cancer in that breast by 15-20% (when the average is 2%). We can't make any further treatment decisions until after this next additional lumpectomy.

I was so ready to move on with seeing MO about radiation and hormone therapy but now I've met another road-block. However, to God, it's not a road-block, because He doesn't make mistakes. I know that God has this in His ultimate control, even if I don't understand the "why" of it. My faith in God and trust in Him is what will get me through the next steps.
