ICD 9 code "breast cancer 174.9"

I'm having a contrast MRI tomorrow and just picked up the orders and under "problems," the radiologist listed "breast cancer, 174.9." Does this mean the radiologist has diagnosed me with breast cancer or is this the code they use when they are still trying to figure out what it is?

They use the code because that will get the MRI paid. They use it for my mammo's & bloodwork.

Yes the ICD code 174.9 is a standard billing code that is accepted by insurance companies so they will get paid. I work in billing and have never heard of anyone not accepting this code.

As you probably know, ICD-10 has now been mandated for the US healthcare system. This means new codes. I found this to be the most robust and user-friendly ICD-10 tool if anyone needs help. It has all codes and even provides a free training tool to use.

Hoppie, if they write the order as "benign breast tumor" --it won't get covered. Or if they write "rule out breast carcinoma(cancer)" they won't get paid.. They have to write in the so to speak declarative "Breast cancer" and it's code number .
