I have two incisions from my surgery last week - one is long, maybe three inches and glued together (for my ANLD) and I'm wondering why they didn't tell me to put Vaseline on it to soften the scar like the dermatologist did when I had skin cancer removed from my forehead? Anyone?

Lilnutmeg, I'm three weeks out from bmx with alnd and I had the same experience, had to go back due to internal bleeding. I was apogogetic as it was late in the evening, surgical staff said no worries, they were having a party and asked me to move myself to operating table. My bottom half worked but not my top half . On my way home, had chest pain, stopped at ER and was hospitalized with blood clots in my lungs and a pneumothorax, Must have been a great party wish I could remember it.

Finished with the drains and am still swollen in armpits as well . Will be on blood thinners for awhile but overall doing ok

My first post, but have been gleaning bits of wisdom from this forum since I was diagnosed late August. Thanks to all

Thanks ladies for your support... every day is new adventure .. gotta keep our humour! Will be glad when the drains come out and anxious to receive the final pathology report on November 12th

On a side note .. I'm almost positive my dog laughs at me when he sees me shuffling throughout the house .... I know how he feels now when we took him to be neutered; dangling parts left on the OR table ...he gives me that look that says "Payback is a b.....* ! So far I've had no cravings for rawhide and certainly no desire to initiate compulsive licking ;)

Nutmeg- glad you are stronger after such a tough time!! I think the surgical staff are used to crazy things Post-op patients say. I think I was being ornery from what my PS said. Lol.

Solfeo- glad you got a low score and no chemo!! I think a lot of BC patients can skip it if they are not Her2 positive and have MX. I just realized we both had our surgery on Oct 7!! We are 4 weeks out!

When I went for fill today, I complained of extra pressure and my PS sent me for US. Ended up having radiology drain 30cc of fluid that was behind the TE. It didn't hurt because I am numb. The fluid wasn't cloudy, they sent it to lab. Sure hope no infection :(. It actually feels better now.

Mari- I had 1 drain for 1 week and 1 drain for 2 weeks But today as I said I had some extra fluid drained.

Night all! I have been doing too much my PS said. Probably caused extra fluid build up.  Everybody take it easy!

Why does my skin feel like it's burning? Lumpectomy and Anld last week.

Marijen - I have some burning too! It's kinda like a burn or chafe feeling, that's very irritating and uncomfortable... I asked my surgeon about it, and she said it was related to nerves, and should slowly get better and better.

PMR53 - Sending positive thoughts as you await the lab results for the fluid drawn off. Sound like you are doing really well.

The waiting part of this journey has been the difficult part for me.

Thanks for your reply KcinMN, I thought of that after I posted last night. It's probably nerves that were disrupted or cut. When I had forehead incision the surgeon said the nerves need time to reconnect. For the burning I have been using my Aquaphor and the Lidocaine Plus I bought to be ready for rads. Also Vaseline on the incisions to soften the scar. It helps a lot.

    Thank you Nutmeg!

Yes waiting is part of this BC journey. I think I did too much. From what I researched. 2 weeks out I packed up my sisters house. Dumb.

I had good news today. Went to my plastic surgeon and got my drains removed. For some reason when I got home I got very emotional and cried. Really don't know why. I think it may be because that was the first time my husband had seen me without bra. I don't know just In a funk and still waiting for that oncotype score. Stopped at a place that sells all kinds of stuff for breast cancer patients and bought some foam pads to fillmy bras until I start getting fills in my expanders. Just seeing all the wigs and stuff scared me. Nothing about this journey is easy. But it's correct that I can now shower with no worries right? So that's a plus.

Hang in there mvspaulding it will get better. It is quite a shock to see your chest for the first time. My hubby took it very well. I am more critical than he is.

I am praying your once score comes back very low and you can proceed without chemo.

Just relax as much as possible and heal. That is the most important step right now.

Enjoy your shower, I always loved getting my tubes removed so I could have a nice shower. You will feel like a million bucks.

Mvspaulding - hope you get that shower in soon!

Marijen - ooh, maybe I should try lidocaine. Good idea! Does it work?

KGinMN - there was an important word in what your surgeon said.....s.l.o.w.l.y !! The nerves will slowly get better. I've just jumped onto the boards, but I too had that 'rug burn' feeling, and I'm three weeks out from surgery and I'm not sure any amount of cream would have helped. It all seemed to be 'within' rather than 'on top'. I think of it as all the nerves getting reacquainted with one another. Sort of like that family reunion held every 25 years and all those additional cousins and spouses and newborns....who belongs to who?....and those little nerves are trying to find their way back together again.

Also, I had some good news today too!

I started off stage IIIA and had chemo right away. Well, after surgery 2 weeks ago, I got upstaged! :( IIIC! Because the tumor was still large and more lymph node involvement than expected.

Soooo, they sent me in for a pet scan this morning. It came back clear!!!!! I am so relieved!

I still have radiation and Letrozole to help keep me clear. Not excited about that exactly... But I'll do what I gotta do! I'm just glad about a clear scan today

Good for you.....not so much about the upstaging, but for the all clear. Grab those positives!!

Every time I try to do more than I should, I feel it. It's hard to remember that this was major surgery, and we need time to heal. I feel pretty good, so I have to remember to not go overboard. Good thing I am not working, cause I know I would be overdoing it.

KCinMN, I think it works, just like ice - it numbs for while. I would definitely describe it as rug burn. All those cousins playing football? Patience and perserverance is the name of the game

OH I guess that can happen to me too. I am IIIA based on 2 lymph they know about, when pathology test comes in I would think they find more, not less. It is unbelievable to me that my MO, back in July didn't make it clear to me how serious IDC is. In my naivete I thought the Femara might shrink the tumors down to nothing and I wouldn't need surgery. She had the opportunity to set me straight and instead she didn't answer the question.

thanks for the well wishes for surgery. Havent been on my computer much since. All went well. I woke up from surgery less 3 lymph nodes and minus two breasts ;). 1 week later i found out that im entirely cancer free. What a huge relief. Pain has been easy until about 3 days ago. Im now having horrible nerve pain from the lymph node biopsy. Man oh man it hurts. All in all, this was much easier than i anticipated, for which im grateful. Now to figure out this nerve pain. I hope all other Octber surgeries are progressing well. Hugs to you all.

    Hi All,

One week out from my Lump and SLNB, and no doctor call with results yet. He cancelled my Wed. appt. because the results weren't back yet - so no feedback either. I thought about calling to try to relieve the anxiety of worrying during the weekend but changed my mind. I can anticipate that the longer it goes the better news it is (like they don't feel the urgency to call me), or maybe it's something complicated in the tissue diagnosis - but in the end why worry about the future of treatments when I don't have the full picture yet? Bad see-saw of unconfirmed emotions.

Had no pain up until 2 days ago - the SLNB scar with dissolvable sutures starting to hurt, and a "pulling" sensation under my armpit and across my shoulder blade. Also the rug burn feeling. Couple of stabbing sensations, loads of fun. Still wearing this stupid soft sports bra all day and night, thinking I shouldn't take it off until the doctor says I can.

Sloshing around from the seroma like a 1/2 empty water jug, wondering if people can hear it in the store..? No swelling or redness or sign of infection there. The glue is still on. Are you supposed to put Vaseline around the glue and the stitches to soften it? I was afraid you might keep it from healing.

Staying busy and trying not to do too much, but overseeing my front yard landscape overhaul project. Stripped the yard clean of lawn and some old plants, designing a whole new look. I think everything I plant will remind me of something about this journey and my recovery - re-birth, re-growth, new beginnings, *insert symbolism here* :)

Damn I need to get in there and dig and move rocks but waiting for the doc's ok first.

    Have a good weekend!

Got my shower in and it felt good but I cried thriugh half of it. It was the first time I actually saw and felt what they looked like. Then I just had to remind myself that they won't always look this way and I am going to be ok and cancer free.

Glad your scans went well KCinMN but sorry about upgrade. Hope everyone has a good weekend!

I just avoid the mirror as much as I can! Lol!

Crazy chest, no eyebrows or lashes yet, creepy old man hair on my head....

Ugh, and the rug burn pain. Ouch!

    But I'm alive! :)

I'm still improving, drain slowed down yesterday. Sore under the arm and " rug burn ". Bruising is better, and I believe the long incision scar will smooth out like the one on my forehead from this summer. Right now it's hard and lumpy. No arm swelling, yay! No tight pulling like you described Monarch. No report yet too - that's what 'm worried about and future watching and waiting. I don't believe waiting for symptoms is the way to go. Monarch go easy on the rocks! KCinMN, Your hair will grow back.

Just chiming in about the path report wait time. Both times, it took about 10 days-2weeks. I think the thing that helped was my surgeon told me it would and scheduled appts based on that info. I wish you guys weren't having to wonder, worry and guess why it's taking so long because that is so hard!!.

Monarch- hope you'll post before and after pics of your new yard. Love the symbolism!

Anyone know when your hair starts to grow back? Am 7 weeks out from last chemo and though there is some wispy crazy looking hair- have had most of that...am just hoping I'm not in the 6-10% who don't get it back :( Definitely having hair envy!!

If I had a seroma I would know it right? How soon do they show up after surgery? Anyone?

I have found that raising my arm above my head gets the fluid in my drain tube moving when it seems stalled.

My surgeon said that seroma's are different to normal swelling in that seroma's have a "wave effect" when touched. I'm assuming that means they ripple like water as they are fluid filled. Someone else maybe able to explain it better though.
