DIEP 2015

haha yes - my Ken is mostly gone at 10 weeks but may always look a bit weird being pulled higher -- nothing now like that truly excellent visual LAstar!
Lessharp -- I found out that my difficulties taking a deep breath first few days was because they have to monkey with your sternum -- depending on the dr..... lift it a bit, or remove a snip of rib in order to get at the necessary arteries in your chest. It fades in abut a week.
Re the back pain Eve -- that first week it was by far the worst of all my pains -- back muscles rebelling at the hunch position of walking, so as you start walking straighter and straighter this next week or two it will lessen on its own. In the meantime some gentle stretches and moves of shoulder blades and trunk as you can tolerate, or better yet a friendly back rub when you are sitting facing backwards in a kitchen chair! So glad to hear the rest is going well and you are happy.
I am back from participating as a model in BRA day in Vancouver. So glad I did it, as there were so many women with upcoming surgeries and lots of questions. While there, I got one of the '-fuckcancer-' [with 'embrace life' on the inside] silver bracelets. Love it.

Sensation in the Foob!!!
Just noticed over the last couple days that I have some sensation in the flap on my prophylactic side, from the medial side to about 1/3 to 1/2 way across! I'm quite excited ☺
There's nothing in the side where I had all the radiation etc. and nothing much in my axilla. I'm wondering if it will go again when I have my revision on that side (stage 2) January 7.
While I'm here, can I just explain that for mental health reasons I do not look at this site very frequently these days ..... usually only as a result of someone asking to be added to the timeline, which generates an email. I'm glad the thread took off so well and is still going strong, for all those who still need the support, but personally I will be pleased when the year comes to an end!
Has anybody started a 2016 thread yet????
Good luck to all the Foobie Noobies xxxxx

Regarding the back pain, bend your knees slightly when you walk to take pressure off your back.
-
Evegibb- so after the visual and careful inspection I too have the ken doll mound. I don't know if I'm swollen or if I'm stitched high up and tight that makes it proment. To be quite honest I had a csection scarx2 that made what abdomen fat I had (not a ton but enough) hang over and so to have that gone where I can see everything nicely I thought was normal but after the visual I realized wow, that's me too! I'm one month out and I can stand up fine with no back pain. It took awhile. Like at least 2 1/2 weeks! I still have my last drain in and my abdomen feels 6mo pregnant when I stand up especially after eating. I know that at my post op the PS said he was gonna lower my scar. I guess he noticed my ken doll mound lol.

From diagnosis on, I knew that I would opt for the DIEP. The day I was officially diagnosed from the biopsy, I met with my breast surgeon and we discussed my options. Before I had completed my chemo, I met with my plastic surgeon and he agreed a DIEP would be best because I was scheduled for six weeks of radiation. I had the bilateral skin and nipple saving surgery before radiation and tissue expanders were placed at that time but, no fill because they didn't want them expanded during radiation. We are finally, five months post bilateral, filling the expanders. I have not had any problems with the expanders at all and when we finally do the deep in January or February, my skin and muscles will already be stretched and ready to easily accept the new tissue. Sometimes delayed DIEP works out the best, especially if radiation might be involved after the mastectomy surgery. Expanders are used with both DIEP or implants if you do not do immediate reconstruction

KD effect, Yes I do still have this too - Diep Dec 2014. I have always assumed it is fat and understand it can be lipoed away. I do not feel at this point it is about being swollen. I don't think it is going to reduce now
-
I, too, wondered about the Ken doll effect. Too funny!
Evegibb - I had TERRIBLE back pain for two weeks after surgery. I had my husband buy me a walker for around the house - thrift stores have them. I also splurged and got massages. I was lucky that one of my colleagues had a great massage therapist who was willing to work around my issues, since you obviously can't lie on your stomach.
-
DIEP Phase 1 tomorrow morning!!! I have to check in at 5:45 a.m. for my 7:45 surgery. Talk to you all after!!!
-
Wish you all the best, Beegirl.

I have a question for those that are a few months out from surgery. When I asked my PS about how much longer I had to wear a bra at night PS said for best results and to keep the new foobs perky you should wear a bra 24 hours 7 days a week, I'm a C cup. This seems a little much and I never read it in my research on DIEP. Any thoughts?
-
Outdoorswoman,
I had to wear a mastectomy bra after stage one 24/7 for three months, even in the shower. The day my doctor said I could switch a sports bra was glorious.
-
phenomene, do you still wear on at night, PS has left me to believe this 24/7 is for life.
-
For life?! That's weird. I had to wear a bra 24/7 for 3 months. After that, he said I could wear whatever I wanted whenever I wanted.
-
That's the impression I had. Kinda the nice part of having perky ones to be bra free from time to time. Lol I most definitely could have done that in the last ten years. Thanks for your in put.
-
I stopped sleeping in a bra after about 3 months. I'm 9 months out and sometimes go without a bra during the day if I'm not doing anything vigorous. Sometimes my breasts felt a little sore when I didn't wear a bra in the morning, so I wore one more regularly early on. I don't feel that soreness now.
-
I stopped after about 6 weeks. I would intermittently wear it if they were bothering me.
-
I think my PS is opposite everyone else. He said no bra... I just recently started wearing one again, but not all the time...
-
39andhip...thank you for posting. I was starting to panic as PS told me absolutely no bra until I am told by him otherwise. I wonder if i will have clearance after follow-up late November....
-
how are you all doing? Any changes?
I am two weeks out...starting to see a reduction in swelling under my arms...so a more rounded shape on my foobs, and delineation between breast and armpit.
Still numb under back of arm...hoping that resolves.
-
@DizzParkMom - Good to hear. I probably would have panicked except that I'm eight weeks out and feel great, so the no bra route obviously worked for me.
-
I was also told no bra. Funny how each surgeon has their own style. Just met with PS today to discuss stage 2! Waiting for it to be scheduled and may be a bit as I have to schedule around work. I'll be getting a reduction and slight lift on left. New nipple and fat grafting on foob, dog ears at hips done and some work done on a one side abdominal bulge- she doesn't think it's a hernia but explained it can sometimes happen with this surgery. I'm excited!
-
waiting for my weekly call from the breast center tomorrow. I still have one drain (10/6 surgery). Did anyone else have to have their drains for this long? I'm still averaging about 35cc/day. I'm scheduled to go back to work Monday, almost 5 weeks post op but if drain isn't out i can't do that.
-
lessharp, I had my bmx with left sentinel node biopsy back in February. I remember how frustrating the numbness was under and behind my arm back then. Over time some sensation has returned. It is still not normal, but it doesn't totally bug me anymore like it did back when. So there is hope.
-
I just PM'd Morwenna to be added to the list. Bilateral DIEP on December 10 at IU. Trineg, looks like we'll be surgery sisters, although your Stage 2 should be much easier than my Stage 1.
My original bmx was back in February with TE's, but one got infected. Removed in March. Replaced in June. Removed the end of June after a bout with sepsis.
So, now I am just about recovered from all that and ready to give it another go. My original PS recommended a lat flap, but that just didn't sit with me, so I ended up here. I am excited yet terrified. However, I will definitely show up!
-
talking of bras....I wore one post op for all surgeries ....and have had a few...off today to buy some nice bras...finally.Had BC 15 years ago, implant with prostheses, then again Dx July 2013,implants,they failed.DIEP July 2014,but have had problems with tummy, still swollen, and not right...BUT onward and upward.....going ahead as boobs are fine....plan to get ones that will give me a cleavage....you will all get there,eventually.....it will pass....gentle hugs.
-
TMGilbert: I think they said if you are under 50 you can take it out but we waited a little longer to do it. I think we have all drains out by 2.5 weeks? I guess some of us are juicier than others. What do they say at the center about it?
-
i had one stubborn drain in for just over 4 weeks.
-
Trvler- I have to start wearing my binder. I didn't know I was supposed to wear it. I wonder if that will help with my belly being tight and swollen? I thought I started to wear binder after all
Drains were out? Tuesday will be 5 weeks post op. I'm supposed to call them on Monday after wearing the binder to let them know where I am as far as output.
Jillybee-what does your doctors say about your swollen belly?? I'm hoping mine goes down. It's worse after I eat but still not "flat" at all. -
Oh, wow. They fitted me with the binder 8 days out at my post op. They didn't tell you to wear it?
-
My PS told me to order a binder and bra for after surgery, but her associate told me I didn't need to wear the binder, but said to wear the bra 24/7. I wear the binder while riding in the car for extra support. It seems everyone has a different opinion on what to do or not do. That was the most frustrating thing for me in the hospital. Everyone seemed to contradict what another person would say. I'm guessing these things are not critical, but personal preference with the PS...or perhaps each individual case.
my abdomen is definitely swollen. I tried to put on a pair of my jeans yesterday and couldn't button them up! LOL.
