i'm a 37 year old female just diagnosed with IDC, the tumor 0.8 cm and receptor positive 95% 2+. My grade was 3. Lymph node metastatic carcinoma, positive for keratin immunosatin

Now just waiting for my MRI WEd, to determine the stage of the cancer

What am I to expect? So nervous bc people talk of mastectomy since I'm a 37, 5'10 and naturally big boos at 38DD. The thought makes me shake/nervous tumm

After after speaking to my doctors told them I could not feel the lump of my left boob due to a too may Ortho surgeries & most recent two years old athletic injury of me blowing out my left shoulder in a freak swimming Injury plus an old ulnar nerve injury that has me At 80% nerve feeling on my left arm/boob.

    Hi MoHoff78:

I have no answers for you, as I was also just recently diagnosed myself. But 36 years old, 36D, and also a swimmer. From what I understand (a full week into this, geez) you don't know anything until you know, so try not to get ahead of yourself. This part (from what the women who have been through it already) seems to be the worst.

I had my MRI yesterday, and my first surgical consult set up for tomorrow. What's made me feel better is not doing the research on treatments (as there's way too much information and variables), but to do my research on oncologists, surgeons, etc, to set up those appointments so I know I'll have a good treatment team to help explain all of the options.

This is a great community, and one of the few things keeping me sane the past few days. I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but you've come to the right place and you are not alone.

Mohoff78 Hi there. So sorry you have to be here but welcome. I know you will find this site very helpful. Having big boobs has nothing to do with mastectomy vs lumpectomy. The density is what matters. The surgical issues are another matter. You just want to make sure you can be properly screened in the future. Where you get treated is a huge piece of the puzzle. Hopefully you are at a university based teaching hospital. Have you seen a breast surgeon yet? You can private message me if you like to discuss. Good luck. Keep us posted...

Sorry that you found yourself here.

Do you have a surgical consultation set-up yet? The MRI will be key for that and until it's done there isn't much point trying to figure out mastectomy vs lumpectomy. Easier said than done, I know.

My surgeon was referred by the radiologist who reviewed my mammogram and ultrasound. My friend kept getting after me to seek a second opinion, but everyone I talked to had used him as their breast surgeon and had wonderful things to say about him. He took my gallbladder out about 5 years ago, so I am happy to be back in his care for this.

Use the time leading up to the consultation to make a list of questions. I brought my husband and my mom with me to the consultation and had my mom take notes. That way my husband and I could focus on talking to the doctor and my mom had something to do to keep her busy and involved.

I understand why you are weary of the mastectomy. But maybe the MRI will give the doctors more info. You may want to emphasize to the surgeon that given your athletic lifestyle you would prefer lumpectomy. And ask for reasons why the mastectomy would be essential. I hope everything goes smoothly and that you and the doctors can come to a compromise.
