positive for lymph node cancer. question: does cancer in your nodes start someplace else and travel to the nodes?

pet scan: hypermetabolic enlarged right anxillary lymph node

hypermetabolic focus involving left lobe of thyroid associated with subcentimeter nodule.

funny how pet scan did not pick up biopsied left breast cancer.

any insight?

I.believe pet scans only pick up masses greater than 2cm.

Good question about if cancer in lymph nodes starts elsewhere. My understanding is that everything our bodies are made of can develop cancer, including salivary glands and tear ducts. There's probably cancer of the eyelash. Sigh. So I'm sure we can develop lymph node cancer, or lymphoma. But in my case, for an example, I had breast cancer that had moved on to my lymph nodes. It was still breast cancer, just spread to nearby axillary lymph nodes. Your doctor has biopsied your lymph node, but it would be good to confirm the DX. Sometimes we don't hear anything after the first two things our Drs say, so we get mixed up when we try to remember exactly what was said. I felt like I had been smacked up both sides of my head w a couple of cast iron frying pans, so I couldn't process much of what I was being told. Very frustrating, and an unwelcome source of anxiety. See if you can get a hard copy of what you need to know to take home with you. I should have done that. I tried to take notes, but I did not do a good job of it. So, lots of confused anxiety and fear. Let us know what you find out. big hug!

The answer to your question is actually both. You could have primary lymph node cancer or cancer from anywhere that spread to your lymph nodes. The biopsy should be able to define it. Im not seeing that a malignancy was picked up in the information you provided. Only an enlargement. This can't be the full report right?

I have thyroid issues also going on which showed up on the PET scan. My thyroid ultrasound showed 4 nodules, 2 on each side. One nodule from each side was biopsied and the results were atypical. So not clearly cancer, not clearly benign. The blood tests make it look like I have parathyroid stuff going on. Doc wants to be aggressive with it, so I am having surgery when they do my mastectomy.
