Hi everyone,

I am writing on behalf of my wonderful Mother in Law.

A bit of background on this amazing woman; she has had breast cancer in both breasts, 10 years apart, kidney cancer (all ok now), secondary bone cancer (obviously not curable) and now also liver cancer. She was on tamoxifen but it was while taking this that they found the liver cancer so they have now switched her to another oral Chemo treatment which tests have shown is suppressing the growth of the liver cancer but has left her with very painful Palmar Plantar on both her hands and feet and her hands have started cracking.

She is due back at Hospital next week but I wondered in the meantime if anyone has found anything that alleviates the symptoms please?

Really appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you x

    Hi 2522laura,

We're so sorry for what's going on with your mother in law but glad you found this site.

This link Hand Foot Syndrome (HFS) or Palmar-Plantar Erythrodysesthesia (PPE) might have some information about alleviating the symptoms your mother in law is experiencing. We wish you both well.

Hi Laura. I so feel for your MIL. It's horrible. I got a bit of relief from taking B6. Unfortunately, it takes a while to work and in the meantime you suffer. If she's going to be on this chemo a while, it might be worth a shot. Ask the doctor first if it's ok, though. The only thing that gave me temporary relief (very temporary) was freezing wet mitts and socks. There was no way I could rub cold lotion on my feet but some seem to get relief that way. Hugs to your mom-in-law.

Forgot to mention, besides orally taking B6, I also used it in liquid form on those mitts and socks, a few drops mixed in with the water. I think stuff is highly absorbable through your feet (kind of like that old wives tale of Vicks on your soles when you have a cold, or a bar of soap by your feet in the bed for cramps). Some vegetable glycerin or aloe gel (or both) might help the cracks if you can manage to dab it on. Ouch.
