October 2015 Surgeries

They told me I could shower too but it's quite a process! I've also been surprised by lack of major pain, just on regular Tylenol and still able to get around pretty well. Just noticed my impacted arm is pretty numb at the top - is this a normal post surgery thing? Still only 4 days out. Have an appt with PS tmrw so I'll be checking in with her. This whole thing blows but happy to know we are not alone in this dance with the cancer beast. Best wishes and speedy recovery to all
-
I keep waiting for the pain to subside some but it hasn't happened yet. I really don't like being on pain pills so I wish I could cut back.
-
MSV I was told I could shower, I had the drains hanging around my neck. Cant wait to have them out, they are so uncomfortable. The draining is slowing. I just had about 40 cc in 12 hours in one drain and next to nothing in the other. The color is also getting lighter, still some stringy things coming out. For you ladies who have your drains out with TE in place how are you doing/feeling? Are they comfortable? It feels so strange. My friend came over today and brought a weeks worth of meals and my step mom is here with me, she is wonderful. My family and friends have been so supportive and it helps to have people around otherwise I tend to get down.
-
My PBMX surgery was 2 weeks ago today and since the surgery my right nipple has been black, both BN and surgeon weren't worried at all, can't say I shared their confidence. Well, I liked to share that a large scab fell off this morning in the shower and everything is pretty and pink underneath. Yay!
Husband is away looking after his Mother during her final days so felt I had to share here on these boards. Who else am I gonna tell who will understand?
-
My drains were covered by a big sheet of plastic (think giant clear band-aid) so I was also allowed to shower. My general surgeon told me some reconstruction surgeons did not allow showers. I think it depends on your surgeon and how your drains are exposed.
-
Lemint- not sure when your surgery was. It is helpful for replies if you fill out the surgical date under profile. I had Uni MX Oct 7. I had 1 drain in for 1 week and the other 2 weeks. My PS said I could shower right away. I tied the drains up with a shoelace around my neck. My first drain came out when it got below 30cc of drainage in a 24 hour period. The insertion site for the second drain became very sore by the end of the 2nd week. It was a relieve to get it out. It does not hurt at all. If it comes out too soon fluid accumulates around the TE and the body has to absorb it. I had a small amount accumulate. I stood under warm shower and massage helped with uncomfortable TE. My first fill was 5O cc which was too much. It became uncomfortable esp under the arm. I am only getting 25 cc next fill. I had 300 cc during surgery so I don't have too far to go. I wear a Cooby bra and it is supportive yet comfortable and everything looks even. I hope I answered questions for everyone.

PMR53, I thought my surgery was visable. I changed it. My surgery was last Thursday the 29th. I'm going in next Monday to PS. Hopefully the production of the drains will be much lower and I can have them removed. I still get so tired and a little sick to my stomach when I've been up to long even just sitting up. Oh well.
-
Lemint- it sounds like you are having nausea. Did they give you anything? Could be pain Meds. They have a Scopalamine patch you put behind your ear that works well for 72 hours. Also if you are taking pain Meds on empty stomach. Let me know if you have any questions. You can PM me. You can call your doctors office too. Hope you start feeling better.

Thanks, PMR. I do take my medication with food it just comes and goes. I have a prescription for zofran which helps. It's awesome to be able to come on this site and get some idea of what's going on while you're waiting for your doctor to call back. I really appreciate your responses.
-
Lemint I feel the same way. I washed my hair in the sink last night and covered my torso with a towel and washed the rest of me. I also had to change my binder because I spilled coffee down it and on the gauze filling. By the time I was done with all that I was in tears and exhausted. As an added aggravation I started my period the day I came home from hospital. I haven't had one for over 5 years due to taking continuous birth control, pills. So needless to say this was a bad one. Wouldn't be surprised if I wasn't slightly anemic with how much I have bled. Probably adding to my lack of energy. Can't wait to go this Friday to get these drains out is it painful to have them removed
-
OMG MVS, you poor thing. As if you don't have enough to deal with you get your period on top of it. I stopped menstruating last summer 2014. I love taking warm and hot baths when I'm stressed but of course we can't take a bath with these stupid drains in. I hope it not to painful when you have them removed Friday. I hope to have mine removed next Monday. Let us know how it goes. I hope you feel better soon. Is anyone helping you?
-
yes, I have a strong support system. I just have to get better at letting people help me. I'm sure some of you have problems with that too. I guess there are just going to be bad days and good days. :
-
I know how you feel, I also have a hard time asking for help. One day at a time.
-
mvs- can't believe your period started like that! When it rains, it pours sometimes! Ugh! So sorry you're dealing with that too! Glad you have good support and should get those drains out soon!
Lemint - my drains came out last Thursday, and oh what a relief! So much more comfortable. Meds making me feel ill too... I have zofran, so trying to stay on top of that. But the nausea still hits here and there.
I'm about 11 days out from surgery today. Feeling better and better all the time. Still not doing very much though. I have a good support system, and have been realizing I just have to let them help me while I stay in the recliner. It's hard though. I usually am very active and just do what needs to be done! Not at the moment though!
Tissue expanders feeling funny but ok. I've had a couple of somewhat numb areas in diff spots, my doc didn't seem too worried. They think I'm healing well. I have multiple appts this week yet. So far, I haven't had the best news with chemo and surgery. I'm trying to stay positive though. Thankful for all you ladies here. Always encouraging
-
Lemint did you have lymph nodes removed? If so, be careful with hot baths. Talk to your physiotherapist.
We used to have a spa (hot tub) at our old house and I loved it as I have neck and back issues due to an injury years ago.
We had planned to buy one here but there doesn't seem much point now as hot water is not recommended.

Wow ladies I had four pages to catch up on. I am amazed at how fast this month went.
I have updated the surgery list. If I missed anyone or missed a procedure please let me know and I will fix it.
I have been awol for the last 10 days. Limited access to the Internet and used all my data keeping up with my reunion.
I had a wonderful 40th class reunion. It was so much fun to go to an event that wasn't connected to cancer. a few people asked but I kept the talk to a minimum. Enjoyed feeling mostly normal for a change.
I guess ironically since I had wrist surgery and still had the ugly splint on that is what people were concerned about. I wore long sleeves but it still showed some.
I had drains with 4 of my surgeries and my PS was one of the ones who said absolutely no showers. Said it was a fear of infections. I also got told no shower with my wrist to keep it clean and dry. He suggested a bath but due to my incision on the hip I could not do that so sponge bathed many days this month. I am so relieved I can shower all I want to now.
Ken doll effect. I definitely have that issue. I am now just going to have to wait it out. I have had the area lipoed twice but it hasn't seemed to help much. I have compression on the area this time. PS put me in a compression garment that goes from under my breasts to my knees. It has hook and eyes and zippers down both sides. I am going to wear this for at least 8 weeks this time. Hope I see good results because this is the last surgery I will do except for nipples.
I also have the numb area on the backside of my upper arm that had the nodes removed. I think mine is related to the PS having to cut in the arm pit looking for some good veins to attach to my DIEP flap during surgery because I did not have good veins and he needed more blood flow. I got lucky the flap made it but I think my nerves in the arm didn't survive the trauma.
To everyone healing, I am praying for quick recovery and no infections or setbacks.
I was told to use my diagnosis date as my survivor date. I did chemo first so my surgery was 7 months after diagnosis and the tumor was dead. I guess you can use whatever date you feel works for you. I actually use my last day of radiation as my survivor date. DCIS was found in my original tumor bed at surgery so I had to do radiation to insure a clean chest wall.
Happy November.
-
JDayton...so glad you enjoyed your reunion! Sounds great and everyone needs a break for BC for sure. Thank you for starting this thread and keeping it updated.
Looking for others in my situation:
I had LUMP 2 weeks ago. At followup apt with surgeon- she told me there was some DCIS that she removed. (I had chemo prior and had complete response- so she saw none of the original IDC but removed the area where it had been- SNB clear) )
Anyway, she said that technically, I've had 2 cancers in same breast and that usually means MX. My ONC said radiation would take care of it. Consulting 2 different RO groups next week to see what they say. Just wondering if there are others who haven't done MX with this same kind of situation.
Thanks for any advice/help/support any of you may have for me.

That is so true, needing time away from thinking about breast cancer. Hard to do during breast cancer awareness month. You're thinking about everything you have to do all day, then you can't even watch TV without constantly hearing about it. I know it sounds cynical, but if I never see another pink freaking ribbon... haha
-
Soldeo I am sick of Breast Cancer month too. I shocked the poor lady at the store last week. She asked if I wanted to round up my purchase and donate for Breast cancer month. I calmly said no, I just donated my breast a couple weeks ago. I have donated enough. I was in one of those moods.

Got my Oncotype score today: a respectfully low 13! Tomorrow I see the MO to find out if there is any reason she still thinks I need chemo, but it's looking pretty darned good that I won't. I never expected this outcome given the size and probable length of time the tumor went undiscovered. My original surgeon even recommended neoadjuvent chemo, she was so sure I was going to need it (good thing I question everything!). Just goes to show, it is impossible to predict how this roller coaster ride is going to turn out.
Did anyone else with a low score have a weird time adjusting to the idea of not having chemo? I never wanted chemo so I was always hopeful, but I do have some nagging doubt that this is too good to be true and skipping chemo might lead to my downfall.
Now to decide between Tamoxifen and ovarian suppression+AI since I'm on the cusp of menopause.
That's a good one PMR53. Must have left her speechless. I'll have to remember that one for sometime around the end of next October. -
I'm really happy for you Solfeo! That is great news. Still awaiting mine. So I was told it would take about two weeks but obviously it took longer in your case.
-
Solfeo, how long does it take to get the test results? Is it a blood draw. Does anyone know how long it takes for the drain to stop? I'm on day 7, still at 100cc a day plus.
-
It takes 2 weeks to get the results but it wasn't ordered until 2 weeks after the surgery, which is why I'm just now getting the results.
The drains are different for everyone. Mine never put out 100cc and were removed relatively early, but the cancer side is still draining in small amounts out of a hole in the incision. It happens every day after my shower because the scab falls off from the soap and water.
-
I am not going to have chemo but I still think it would help my sanity to know my recurrence score. Also for follow-up tests. I read that now they are doing the Onco Dx for radiation as well. So I going to present a case on behalf of myself. I'm also thinking of changing MO's. My IDC was originally sized at 1.8 cm, before surgery they resized with an ultrasound and said it was 4mm. The difference being on which "plane" it was measured. My surgeon said the only true accuracy is with surgery. Did you IDC size change. Thanks for your drain experience. I'm just worried about infection and blood poisoning. My drain runs faster after a shower, I think it warms things up to flow.
-
Mari,
I am surprised they didn't order the Oncotype score automatically for you. Did your Drgive a reason as to why not. My tumor size changed only slightly after surgery but was still under 2cm as they expected.
-
My tumor size was all over the place. 2.8 cm in the original ultrasound. 4.5 cm measured externally by the original breast surgeon. 1.6 cm in the CT scan. 2.4 cm in a second ultrasound that was supposed to clear up the discrepancy. Then finally 3.2 cm at time of surgery. I had no idea what to expect. The grade also changed from grade 2 at biopsy to grade 1 in the end.

Morning Ladies - Today I'm 2 weeks out from bilateral mastectomy and feeling more human each day. Initial surgery was a bit rough - 1st surgery was 5 hours as I had large breasts , and once in recovery the surgeon came to the bedside to announce we were going back to the OR as I was bleeding internally
I was in such an anesthetic stupor I couldn't comprehend I was going back to the OR for a 2nd time .. .. I started making ridiculous statements to the Surgeon .. ""Did you forget to remove a breast?"", ""No thank you, I'm a little too tired for another surgery"", ""Will you put me to sleep?"", ""Should I go home and come back?"" .. ""Did you get tired and needed a break?"" ... ""Don't forget to call your wife to tell her you'll be late!" (Ohh the surgeon reminded me of that one!
Second surgery was to be 15 minutes , was 90 minutes due to arterial bleeds (I'm diabetic) ; lost 4 units of blood, hemoglobin was 78 but they did not transfuse.
Pain post surgery has been tolerable, although still feel very thick and stiff under the armpits; wound is healing nicely, and have started to massage daily which I find has helped immensely. . Worst part has been the zero energy and constant dull headache due to the low hemoglobin, taking iron supplements 3x a day (harsh on the bowels .. and is a comedy routine to go to the bathroom) All drains but one were pulled Day 9, remaining one slowing output daily.
Am fortunate to have fabulous support and after care (nurse comes daily to home), siblings and children giving me round the clock care .. I am truly blessed.
This forum has been wonderful for straight answers on what to expect, educate and support myself and other breast sisters as we go through this journey together .. Thank you all!

OH that's funny! Lil Nutmeg, thanks for the laugh!
-
funny! 😂
Glad everything worked out for you. Nutmeg
-
Sorry you had such a rough trot LiLNutmeg but I did LOL.
So glad you are feeling stronger each day.
Wonderful that you have such a great support network.
Hugs Donna.
