Core Biopsy - SCARED!

I posted here earlier in the week, or maybe it was this past weekend, about an upcoming core biopsy.
I've been doing a lot of research on core biopsies since learning I need one.
Since I have a family history of breast cancer, I have always tried to keep myself educated. Knowledge is power, right? One excellent resource is Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book. What a wealth of info, it's helped me quite a bit!
Another great resource is right here, these message boards! Although I have to say, reading the absolute horror stories of so many core biopsies has me pretty shaken up. I've never had to go through a core biopsy before, so I am clueless, I really don't know what to expect. After reading several people's experiences, I think I'm in for some serious torture. People crying, screaming, biopsies being described as brutal and barbaric? If I wasn't anxious before, I can tell you that my anxiety is off the charts now!

Has anyone out there experienced a less horrifying biopsy? I could really use some encouragement here. Yes, I understand that everyone has different pain thresholds....and everyone's biopsy experience will be different, but please....someone throw me a bone. Share with me a decent biopsy experience where you weren't in agony.

Oh my I'm sorry that you are scared by what you are reading. It was seriously no big deal IMHO . It was really only the results that concerned me. The core biopsy was not hard, long or painful particularly . I've had way more difficult medical procedures . I hope it goes like this for you too

I had 5 core biopsies and IMO they were nothing. The anxiety surrounding it is the worse aspect. For me no pain just pressure. I was however sore afterwards. The ice pack on and off every 20 minutes for the first 24 hours really helps. Good luck....

I think you tend to focus on the worst posts, because the vast majority of women who come back to report after their biopsies say that it was much easier than they thought it would be. It is a very, very small minority of women here who have reported any serious discomfort. Most say they worried and made themselves sick anticipating something that turned out to be no big deal.

I worked in the same hospital as biopsy and surgery, and had the biopsy done after work, late in the afternoon, in an adjacent building of the hospital.  Biopsy was easy - ultrasound guided hollow core needle type - I was in a laying down position on my back with a slight incline to the table, it was relatively quick - about an hour from start to finish, only discomfort was the numbing agent, and only for a second or two.  I only felt pressure, no pain, had six cores taken from a 2.6cm mass.  I left with an ice pack in my bra, found a ticket on my car for parking in the patient area (I was an employee) so I stopped at the security office, explained and they rescinded the ticket.  Drove myself home and went about normal business, and worked the next day.  I had a physical, non-stop job at the time, and had no problems - just put the ice pack in my bra for 15 mins of each hour for that first day.  I have at least a dozen friends locally who have been diagnosed with breast cancer - none had issues with biopsy, other than one with a hemotoma - which was not painful, just a really large bruise.  I think some other types of biopsy may be uncomfortable due to positioning during the procedure, and some with difficult to reach biopsy sites - but, for the most part, this is a relatively easy thing.  Try not to worry.

    Thank you everyone!

Instead of worrying about the biopsy, I'll worry about the results. LOL! (Trying not to worry....but that's a whole lot easier said, than done.)

Mine was ultrasound guided and the needle that was used had the ability to squirt lidocaine before it advanced toward the tumor, so after the initial needle stick I felt nothing, despite all the "now you'll feel some pressure" and other warnings. It was kind of fascinating, actually, watching it all on the screen. No bleeding or pain afterward, either. All in all, a great big nothing. I can see why it might be uncomfortable if no pain medication is used, since the needle is pretty big, but I'm not sure that would have been so awful either. I thought of it a getting a shot, and was astounded by the thousands of dollars my insurance company was charged for a "surgical procedure".

DiabeticCancerChick.....you are not wrong about the thousands of dollars!
The center where I am getting this done called me yesterday, to go over my estimate on what I will owe for the biopsy. Since we have yet to meet out deductible, we will have to do that, (which is $500.00), before insurance will pay. Once they do pay, they cover the biopsy at 80%, which leaves us with 20%.
So the grand total that we will have to pay is $934.00!!!! I about fell over!

I'm VERY grateful that we have health insurance and that we have the ability to pay what we will owe....but good grief!!! How insanely expensive!!!! What in the world do women do who have no health insurance? It makes me so angry that this procedure is so dang expensive!! It's just not right!

Etnasgrl, I totally understand what you mean. I was absolutely TERRIFIED!

But I had it done yesterday & agree with all the other ladies here, that it tuned out to be nothing.

I had the stereotactic biopsy where you lie on your stomach. And my calcifications were in a very difficult place to reach, right up against my chest wall.

Also, I have dense breasts, which I read somewhere can also make it more likely that you'll have some pain with your biopsy.

I did have a few little twinges of pain when he took the core samples, 6 in all. But each twinge only lasted about a second & was pretty minor. He did offer more lidocaine but I didn't feel the need for it. And believe me, I am not brave! If I'd been in a lot of pain I definitely would have accepted more lidocaine.

In my mind I had made this out to be some sort of medieval torture, with the doctor sadistically ramming the needle into me while nurses held me down on the table as I screamed & cried. I could not have been more wrong :). The medical professionals know this is a stressful, scary thing & really are concerned with making you as comfortable as possible.

Once this is over for you you'll probably have the same reaction I did: If I'd known how easy this was gonna be I wouldn't have wasted my energy stressing out over it :)

I'll be keeping you in my prayers

Bunnyhuggr....I saw where you posted about your experience and I'm THRILLED that it went so well for you!!! (I meant to reply to your post, I totally forgot, I'm so sorry.)
I had prayed for you, asking for an easy biopsy because I knew you were nervous. I'm so happy to see that my prayer was answered! And now onto the next prayer.....B9 results for you and me!!!

    Happy

etna, I totally agree with everything everyone said here. Only part that hurt was the needle to numb me, and it wasn't that bad at all. Getting the numbing shot in my gums from the dentist is worse, IMO. I was fine the rest of the day, just used the little ice pack on and off. I was fine the next day.

I just had mine today. Mine was an Affirm upright core needle biopsy, and was so much easier than I expected. My calcification was also right up against my chest wall and tough to reach, but they talked me through everything and told me what they were doing. I didn't feel any pain past the anesthesia needle (though I'm pretty sore tonight). Praise God! I hope you and everyone else waiting for theirs has a painless and quick experience...and good results!

    You guys rock! Seriously.

Thank you all so much for the encouragement and support. I can't tell you how much you guys have helped to calm my nerves. That means A LOT.

I'm just ready for Monday morning to get here, so I can have this biopsy and be done with it. It's all about WAITING, isn't it?
Waited for my mammogram results. Then waited for my ultrasound results. Now waiting to have the biopsy. Then, wait some more for the results of the biopsy.
Waiting is what causes SO much stress and anxiety. Obviously, I don't want bad news....but just to know something at this point would be helpful. If you KNOW, you can start making a plan. Not knowing leaves you in limbo, with nothing to do, but wait. LOL!

Here's to great results for us all! xoxoxo

I just had an MRI guided core biopsy done today. While it was long and uncomfortable , it wasn't painful. My surgeon has prescribed me Xanax to take an hour before hand and right before. It actually allowed me to doze off in between steps they were doing! I also used a numbing lidocaine cream an hour beforehand which cut down on the sting of the numbing needle. The biopsy itself wasn't painful. The part that bothered me the most was the whirring of the vacuum assisted needle that reminded me of the sound a dentist drill makes. But there was no pain just tugging sensations! I've kept ice packs in my bra since and I'm barely sore. So far! Definitely wear a sports bra to the procedure. The nurse was wonderful and rubbed my back with encouraging words the whole time while the radiologist explainew step by step what was happening. I'm sorry if this rambled on but I'm so tired and wanted to make sure I didn't leave anything out! Prayers to you for Monday!

    Hi,

I recently had 3 core biopsy & felt no pain whatsoever. They injected lidocaine close to the skin line, then into the deeper tissues. Please don't be afraid!

etnasgrl - had no real pain with mine. The waiting for the results, now THAT was painful. Hopefully, you're in that 20% of biopsies that are benign, but if you're not (like I was,) just keep on keeping on. Unfortunately, many things we read on the internet and forums are magnified til we only see the bad stuff. Hang in there.

Hi there! Good news :). over the years I have had several. Always almost 100% painless, I just had a core biopsy last week on Thursday and had no problem whatsoever. They numb you like the dentist does. After that you only feel pressure. It was not a bad experience at all. I hope this helps you. I have had aspirations, stereotactic and the procedures where they place the clip for surgery. All painless each and every time. I think you will be fine. Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers for a benign result! Let us know. Take care. I know this whole ordeal is very scary to go through!

etnasgrl, it sounds like you are already for this but I will throw in my two cents as well. I've had 5 core biopsies over the years. IF you happen to have very dense breasts, ask them to load you up on the lidocaine because it does not spread in dense tissue. That would be a consideration to address only if you have really dense tissue. After the procedure I found that the best pain management was frequently changing the little ice packets in my bra and I felt better wearing a tight bra to bed for a couple of nights because turning over in bed w/out one did not feel great. Same for exercise....wearing a good sports bra to keep things from moving felt best.

Thank you to everyone who replied. Your responses are truly helping me to calm down and not be so anxious for the procedure, (although anxious for the results is a whole different story!).

MsVeryDenseBreasts....I do have pretty dense breasts, so thank you for that bit of info. I have a fairly low pain tolerance, (I'm just a big baby!), so I will be sure to ask for extra lidocaine.

I will update as soon as I know my results.

    Smile

Took a Valium beforehand (but got a ride to & from, and had to certify I was still conscious enough to give informed consent). The only pain I felt was the first sting of the anesthetic needle--and the area went numb almost immediately. They said I’d feel pressure from the core sampling, but I only heard the clicks of the punch apparatus. Was a tad sore once the lidocaine wore off, but they gave me a little ice pack that fit inside my bra for the first 18 hrs. (20 min. on/off). Took only an extra-strength Tylenol. No soreness the next day, no bruising.

But as Tom Petty said, “the waiting is the hardest part."

I had a core biopsy last week and like others said, it was not nearly as bad at all as the fear and anxiety can lead you to believe. The needle for the numbing was like a small pinch or light bite and the rest was just a pressure type feeling. However, like another poster said, I have very dense breast tissue as well and while they were obtaining the sample I did have to ask for more numbing as I could start to feel them cutting the samples. Once they did though, it was painless. So, be your best advocate and DO NOT hesitate to let them know of ANY discomfort or pain. It's very easy to remedy with more numbing medication.

Afterwards the pain was only slight and icing helped tremendously. Deep breathes, try to stay calm, and be sure to speak up if on the small chance you experience discomfort during it- it's easily rectified with more numbing agent.

I wish you the very best outcomes on both the biopsy procedure itself and results.

Hi, I'm new to the forum, just had a stereotactic core needle biopsy, I had one done 2 yrs ago too, for tiny micro calcification, the one done in the past was very easy, hardly swelled or bruised, this one has been totally different, maybe cause of the location, the first one was on top of my breast, this one, done only 2 days ago, the surgeon had to go in the side, behind my nipple & nearer to chest wall, I now have a big bruise, my breast is a size bigger/fuller then my saggy left breast, :( & now a blister where your bra underwire sits! I don't even know what that is from, its away from my incision site? Anyway, waiting on results, today is supposed to be the day I hear something, I'm a nervous wreck, keep telling myself not to worry, it's out of my control, it's in his hands, :) but it still invades my thoughts! ;( My one question is I also have neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome, which I did not share with my surgeon, cause I was doing so much better with that, but laying on that biopsy table was a feat for me, my arm/shoulder are sore, afraid of lasting consequences from that alone, surgeon said no physical activity for 48hrs. I took off work for 2 days, my job is very physical, I work in a school dishwashing room, it's a lot of repetitive work & 25lb waist high lifting, my breast being tender, heavy, bruised & my arm feeling affected from all of this, will me doing my job make my breast worse or hinder the healing process? I don't need added problems! Any advice is Appreciated! :) p.s. my job is not a money maker it's for something to do, but I am relied upon there though, don't like letting anyone down. :( Thanks, Jeannine
