On my own, just diagnosed. Husband died of cancer 18 months ago.
Hi everyone,
My husband died of cancer, we were in the UK. I just came back to the U.S. 2 months ago to look for a job and start a new life. So now I've been diagnosed with cancer, 1.1cm, class 2, ERPR+. I'm looking at facing a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation, all by myself. I have only a a few friends here who work full time. My family lives 400 miles away, and I can't go there because I have an HMO. Don't know how I'm going to manage by myself, and I'm afraid of what chemo and radiation will do to me. Will I be able to function?

First of alI, I send a big ol' to hug you. It seems like BC jumps on us when we are least able to fend it off. So we need help: Drs, chemo, radiation, tons of support from wherever you can get it. Except maybe from the ice cream in the freezer
. Second. yes. Yes you can do this. No, you will not be alone. The people who will be part of your treatment will be there for you. You can come here and write and whine and moan and be miserable, but note I personally have grown an undrownable spirit, so I keep popping back up from underwater, so too, I imagine quite a few of us have. as you can, too. You can do this. I promise. We have swimmy rings on around here...;))

Hi Terry, oh wow. I'm so sorry for your loss, and your current situation. Just didn't want you to be alone here! Everyone's experience will be different, but I found chemo and radiation doable. Chemo is tough, no lie. I worked full time through it, though, only taking infusion days and the day right after off. Radiation is no big deal. You can do this!

Terrymay, I am so very sorry you lost your husband. And I am sorry you have been diagnosed with BC. Please know that you have a sisterhood here on this website that will be with you as long as you want, day or night. I hope you get a chance to explore around...there are so many interesting threads, and so much support. Do not despair, you do not have to go through this alone. Does your medical center offer support meetings? Or connect people with breast cancer diagnosis? You can start a thread here and ask something like. "Anyone diagnosed near (insert your home location)". I have seen several threads like that. My best to you and a big old cyber hug. Hang in there.

Hi Terrymay,
I am single and was diagnosed in July, had a lumpectomy in Sept, re-excision in Oct, & had my radiation simulation yesterday. I will start radiation next week. I'm fortunate to have incredibly intelligent & compassionate specialists. I have gone through all of this alone & have found that doing as much research as possible (via the internet) has made it easier to make important decisions. This has not been easy, but I can get through it - as can you.

terrymay - so sorry for all you are going through. Please tell your HMO and doctors about your very legitimate concerns, they should be able to link you to organizations in your area which can provide support/actual assistance to you. On your own, you can check with the American Cancer Society in your area, you can check via the internet for any breast cancer specific organizations.

terry, well shit happens so it seems you will need some help to get through all of this? my suggestion is to not try to hide it from the people in your life. You need folks to help you but they can not volunteer if they do not know what is happening. You may be surprised to find out how many folks in your life have also been through this as well.
do a little looking around on this site, it has a wealth of information from experts as well as folks who have been through it as well, best wishes

I'm so sorry that you lost your husband and are now facing your own cancer battle. Please know that you are NOT alone. I am a new member to this board, but already I have experienced so much encouragement and support, you will too!
As others have mentioned, please look into support groups near you, I'm sure that will offer you some new friendships and help during the hard times.
