My Sleeve questions
Hi Ladies: I finally got a Juzo Sleeve however, the fit I am concerned about now, at the top, the cuff part it leaves marks on top of my arm, id say rather deep ones and itching all the time, yes I wash it every night, does this go away the fitter is prompting me to get the 2nd sleeves, well I no not if this is not yet working any input is most appreciated.. they sell Lympha lotion at $30.00 do any of you use this quite expensive I think Sierra best to all

Hi Sierra, not sure if all juzo's have the silicon dots at the top, so I'll ask, does yours? Some people get itchy with these, and I've had that a couple of times, but thankfully mine have settled down. Is it too tight? Mine leave little indentations when I take it off, but it's only slight. On the times it's itched, I've noticed the dents are deeper. Probably that was caused by my arm being a little more swollen than usual, I don't know. If I get itchy, I have a particular cream I put on, it's called alpha keri, and I think its only in nz and Oz, but might be wrong about that. In any case there'll be lots of similar anti itch creams the US can get.

Hello ladies! Saw my PT today to try to gain back the ability to extend my right arm and to learn how to prevent lymphedema. My PT has told me I have ever so slight swelling in that arm - a sign of early lymphedema - she measured me for a compression sleeve and told me where the best places to get them are - she was guessing 50 bucks each! Then she told me I was to wear it everyday for the REST of my life except when I'm sleeping!
Is this common? I know it doesn't seem like a big deal - but I wasn't expecting that. The exersises yes - but not having to wear that sleave everyday!
She wasn't sure about swimming....
Plus, I'm getting arthritus in my right thumb bad enough where it is starting to become difficult to write - guess I need to add another specialist to my list of doctors. Just wondering if a "thumb" sleeve woud help that and if they made "combos".
Blessings to you all!

Hello December!
Yes it is common, as there's no real cure for LE and we are at risk to develop it for the rest of our lives. That said, some people do manage wear their sleeves less over time, particularly if their LE is early. It's generally recommended that you should always wear a glove or gauntlet with your sleeve as the fluid can pool in the hand much more easily if you don't and hands are much harder to deal with. You can get "all in ones". What is important is that you are seen by a qualified LEist. It may be you will be just fine with an off the shelf, but it may be you need a custom made. An ill fitting garment can make the condition much worse. I'm in NZ so I'm not familiar with the US system and how it works. I don't have a link right now, but a site is often mentioned here called stepupspeakout which has lots of great info.
"Be still and know that I am God" I love that. :-)

Hi Ladies.. tks for the infor re the indents sometimes they are worse now, should I put on the cream just prior to the sleeve i usually wait l/2 hr after creme application im in Canada yes my cuff has the silicone in it, the little holes .. im going to try for a few more days, but they are quite pushy where i got it .. i have 30 days after all and they wanted me to return it pronto dont think so tks Musical for the info re ill fitting, and I am concerned and knw that the right fit is important , as with anything in life
I dont thik it is too tight as it has to be to stay on, also re the arty i have it December in y index fingers and middle finger what a pain! however are u a December baby like myself then?
Musical, yes it is itchy when the indents are worse .. and oh, then that makes sense yes the arm is not always swollen exact same on each day is it, i have to get used to this once again elevating helps a lot i use Aveeno cream right now
-
Sierra, really sorry you are having to put up with this! I know it's hard, but try not to scratch. We are at risk of infection ie cellulitis. We DONT want you getting THAT! I think a lot of us carry around some form of antibiotic cream to be used for things like scrapes nicks hangnails etc. If you have that, and it's really annoying you I would put that on as an interim thing, but if you are allergic to those dots, there are other options. It sounds like it's getting worse, so on second thoughts I wouldn't wear it for now and see how your arm settles down.. If you've got 30 days to return, then don't let them push you around. You may just have to get a sleeve without the dots. My skin is extremely sensitive but thankfully Ive found my arm settles down. Yours might too. If you put the cream on first, just let it sink in first for a bit. Let us know how you go.
-
I was allergic to the silicone dots. I wore it once and had a reaction for a week. Could see all the individual dots for days. The sleeve was also way too tight also. Swapped it out with no problems.
-
We are each unique and what works for one of us individually will not for others. What works for me definitely does not for others..I have to have custom sleeves and gloves as I can not wear OTS (Off The Shelf) as I do not fit their idea of sizes and my hand is somewhat 'webbed' so 'standard' gloves cut into the webbing making nasty sores and HURTING BAD. So it has to be custom for me.
My day garments are Juzo. It did take a few times of my LET guy (he has his Masters in OT) 'tweeking' hand measurement to totally get glooves right for the webbing but did several years ago.
My day sleeve has the silicon band on it and I like it. I did have a sleeve early on without the band and it was very bad about rolling over/down which wasn't good so it is added to my sleeves. Yes it does leave little dots for a short time but that's better (to me) than a 'band' rolling down and leaving a 'ring' around my arm.
Besides size/measurements/fit remember that garments come in different levels of compression. The wrong compression level - too low or too high - can cause a lot more issues. For me, I have to have alow compression glove for hand or it will puff up to several times normal size quickly with higher compression. With low compression glove, hand stays nicely down.
I am in a bit different situation and than most as my excellent care is through the local VA so my LET guy is responsible for ordering my garments and being sure that they are what works for me. He orders - I get them. I get 2 new sets (sleeves and gloves) every 6 months as, according to him, a set (if you have only 1) it should be replaced every 3 months so he orders 2 sets every 2 mths. I must say that I can tell a difference and they no longer are 'right'.
I have more issues during winter when it is brutally cold as I can't get out and do as much as I do when it's warm so we are trying a new idea for this winter. Sleeves are going to be medium compression as elbow is the worst area but keep low compression for glove. So far seems to be working good.
I am a very active 'outdoor' woman getting all sorts of cuts/scrapes/punctures/etc. in far from 'clean' situations and have not had any infections. I do not use antibiotic creams or take antibiotics but do use a lot of hydrogen peroxide which works great for me. I don't know if anyone else has tried using it or not and we are all different and need to do what works/ what we need to keep us healthy. I do any and everything I want to, with full approval of my LET guy and my PA.
I do not wear my garments when swimming as I have been told being wet effects the compression when worn.
Day garments and night garments work on different principles. Day garments are for when one is up and active as they work when active. Night garments are designed to work passively while not active/sleeping.
We each have to learn what works for us individually - not what someone says is supposed to work because it works for them. I know that I am 'weird' and certainly what works for me won't for all/most but does for at least me and so some might work for someone else.
-
December - It is possible to get a one piece sleeve and glove - some like them. I like being able to 'rip' my glove off when need to get hand wet. Sleeves should not be worn without either a glove or gauntlet.
-
I don't wear a glove or gauntlet with my sleeve. The PT didn't prescribe one for me because all my swelling is in my upper arm and armpit area. I wear a compression vest with it when it gets bad.
-
Not ALL PTs are LymphEdema Tberapist - that is additional education that many don't actually have though many claim to 'know all about LE'. LET PTs are not the only ones who can be LymphEdema Therapist - OTs (Occupational Therapist) can also have gotten the education. Without the approval of my OT/LET at the facility I go to, the PTs are not allowed to 'work on' any part of me.
It has been impressed on me that sleeves should not be worn without a glove or gauntlet. All I have read says the same. But - no matter what is supposed to be the way 'to do things' is not the same for all.
-
My PT is a certified lymphedema therapist. I've worn my sleeve without a glove for over a year and have never had swelling in my lower arm or hand. I think it's patient specific depending on which area has the problem. I also get my sleeves from a woman who specializes in fitting.
-
December- I have arthritis in my thumbs & I dread taking on and off my gauntlets. It just plains hurts.
I mostly use my sleeves for travel(since truncal edema is mostly my problem). Sometimes the dots bother me & sometimes they don't. One time I wore the sleeves inside out. The problem was the dots sticking to my shirt. As far as sending them back, it was just too much hassle. If I should get new ones, I think I could get by without the dots.

Hi Ladies: what a wealth of sharing here tks so much. I like all ur comments, now about the gloves l4 yrs ago i had a sleeve i checked it out it had those dots at the top and wore no glove im told i do not need one.. so and as most here say it is individual too.. today, I got up did my exercises i always rinse my arm off in the am with Aveeno wash, and put on aveeno lotion then about l5 min after i put on the sleeve yes of course the dots show but nothing like that other day I do notice some tingling too .. so will leave off sleeve tomorrow
I did notice round the elbow area on the inside a few crease marks on my arm like 2 so perhaps i did not have al lthe creases out of it, as i understand it you are to only have l yes i am dealing with a fitter and certified specialist too..
30 days, u are allowed and the gal on phone said to me, we need to get the sleeve back so we can sell it to someone else, Yikes! i could not quite believe that one, and feel like revoking all this, but I just want to get on with dealing this this issue also they tell me they do not have this other sleeve in stock one without the band, so.. i know i am lucky that it is only mild to moderate my old sleeve has the dots too, but they were well worn out from wearing it ..l4 yrs back
tks for sharing Kicks about other sleeves rolling down possibly, I realize we need a certain tightness
i notice moisturizinng more sure helps..
Lastly, I just got this book from library Lymphedema by American Cancer Society it looks helpful with more exercises for me to do
Sierra (Blessed to be here after l4 yrs)

Dr. Jane Armer is a noted LE researcher, and she has LE in the arm. I've seen her speak several times and she is always in a sleeve, with no hand protection. Like Kicks says, we are all different, and AKJ has discovered that her hand does not swell. I think it's a good idea in this forum to keep mentioning the importance of using glove or gauntlet with a sleeve, for the benefit of newbies who may not yet have found the best LE care. I'm pretty sure we all do some experimentation with what works, what doesn't, and ditching the gauntlet for half a day, a day, a few days...incrementally longer trial periods...that to me is smart experimentation. What I worry about is the LE therapists who haven't embraced the hand-protection best-practice and send newly diagnosed women home with sleeves only. That's forced experimentation, and so unfair.

Musical - thank you so much for the information. It was very helpful. This site has been a life saver for me because of people like you. I hope that I have been some help to others as well - as that is why we are all here.
I am so angry on so many different levels. But people like you help me to stay in check - most of the time.
My PT didn't discuss the glove part with me. But I was wondering about that anyway - over the past few months, my arthritus in my right thumb is to the point where using a pen, opening a jar, and so forth is difficult. After Rads, I'm going to see a doctor for my arthritus, along with many other doctor appointments that I've put off untill after treatment.
Thank you so very, very much! I wish you all the best this world has to offer. Blessings,
December

December, big gentle hugs. I can so understand the anger thing. I remember feeling SOOOO angry when I was trying to wrap. I cried and cried, yelled, and yes, biffed the bandages at the wall....oh and I was so angry I wrote a poem that's on here somewhere. It takes time to work through this that's for sure.
I can't imagine how much of a nuisance arthritis would be in addition to LE which can be a monster to deal with all on its own. I hope you get some relief from that.
When I was first dxd with LE, I wasn't told about the glove/gauntlet either until I saw it on here. I mentioned it to my LEist who thankfully was willing to listen and look into things. Also Im grateful that my LEist is always learning more, and willing to work with me. In my area there really is no one else and the workload is huge. I try and be respectful of that. My glove is mainly a preventative thing as I REALLY DO NOT want to put my hand at risk. I saw a slight bit of swelling and I decided there's no way I want hand LE after what Ive seen other people suffer. As I've said, people will choose, for whatever reason, what they're going to risk. If we were all so different there would be no reason for a forum such as this. Thankfully we can draw from some common factors and learn from those as a base and adjust if necessary.
Blessings to you too!

Hi ladies, I have been given a new custom made Jobst Elvarex Soft which has a new technology in that the top of the sleeve does not have the silicone dots but works the same but without the dot markings left on your arm when you remove the sleeve. I can't remember the exact name but I will be going to the hospital next week when hopefully they will have my new glove, I will find out then. From what I can gather this is a pretty new technology from Jobst. Good luck all. BTW my arm is improving weekly after my LVA surgery and I couldn't be happier, it looks like a normal arm instead of a popeye arm
-
Hi Aussie Elaine, I wear jobst on my BC side and juzo on the other. Id be really keen to see the new jobst!
-
Aussie Elaine, thanks for the update. I'll be investigating that sleeve.

I don't have lymph edema, but. Do have a large seroma into my armpit and cording 10 months post BMX. The lymphedema PT said I am susceptible to getting lymphedema and wants me to get a low pressure sleeve. I tried one on at the fitter and lasted about 5 minutes and pulled it off and said I will think about it.
it was only a Juzo size II and I am average size woman. I am wondering if the fit was correct. I wear Medivencompression stockings and they don't bother me. Does the comfort vary between brands? Looking online to see. what else is available
-
Hi December, Yes I to have been told to wear my sleeve all the time (except in bed). I think its all about managing it and preventing it from getting worse. I also have it in the breast which is more difficult to deal with. I wear a SWELL SPOT which is like a padded quilt over my breast. It makes me look huge so I only wear it in the afternoon when I am home. I am going to be bandaged as well I think. I kind of wished that I had had the breast off as well as the lymphedema I have a seroma in there (fluid from surgery that normally is reabsorbed by the body) I get anxious about what the lymphedema and seroma could be hiding!!! Best wishes Love Muriel

I have jobst elvarex soft glove and sleeve, so far its a number 10 for me
The new band is delightful although I am a person who still needs glue on the band additionally as I exercise and without glue I have slight slipping with this band ....just enough to bother me. The band looks like silicon thread weaved in with the compression threads.
The glove is a winner and its special designed like no other I have seen with more room for our finger webs. This might be good for KICKS webbed fingers. It thought about her as soon as I put it on. However the soft fabric pills on the glove.... but the comfort is there so I can live with that.
I will order again and again until a better product comes along.
I wish I could find my picture of my inflamed arm when I used my silicone dot banded sleeves. The indented dots swelled and became red on my arm when I took the sleeve off. I got very itchy and the worst thing to do is scratch it, which I did. I put antibiotic cream on it When I scratched I had to switch to an over the shoulder sleeve and let it rest for a few days to heal. Ever since that first alergic reaction I still get very itchy on the one area where I scratched when those dotted sleeves are on...Go figure!
I still wear the dotted sleeves as they are not worn out yet. I thought maybe it was the glue brand I used but now im thinking it is the silicon dots because many of you are complaining about them also. The new jobst sleeve band doesnt seem to bother me like the crazy dots do.
Has anyone had a reaction to sleeve glue.
-
Chloesmom: My understanding is that the fit can vary between brands. I've only used one brand (Juzo) myself, but others can tell you better. You may want to get measured again, as the first person who measured me did it wrong.
Muriel: we are Swell Spot Sisters! I have truncal too and must wear one across my MX scar and under my arm. It does make fashion challenging. I want a fashion makeover with Stacey London!!
-
Hi to all today, and hope the LE is improving. further to my recent post about the dots, they are nothing as red as they were, but of course you have to expect some showing of dots.. only issue i have is inner arm which can get red sometimes so i put some baking soda on there, just a tad.. and im moisturizing l5 minutes prior to puttingon sleeve, i can not wear it all day however, my armdoes not ache as much i do the therapy and rest a lot more.. I got some lotion it has tea trea oil init and no parabens.. i use it.. it is for itching also has chamomile .. and says anti bacterial.. so will see Aveeno is what I use also some times
they do have another sleeve for me..without that band..so Im not sure whether to get 2 of this one, or the other also someone told me they have some with velco fasteners? do u know about this?
tks for all input here a really big help

Sierra, I wear one that goes up over my shoulder, then has a has a strap that crosses my body, so no need for silicone as it stays up with the strap. The silicone bothered me a little, but I tend to pocket fluid in my inner bicep with any band around my upper arm - very painful
. Mine is custom, but juzo has one that they make off the shelf like this. Good luck - the process of finding what works for you takes a while but is well worth the effort!
I also do use the lymphoderm lotion - it is expensive but works well for me to limit irritation on my arm, especially at my inner elbow.
Also, I try to avoid Velcro near my arm, too easy to scratch myself on the prickly side
-
hi Floaton tks for this appreciate and oh , gosh dont think Id like the strap you know i wear t shirts now loose stuff However, I will ask to see one when next there tks ..
right nowi dont wear my bra
just t shirts to treat myself you know
very loose ones too
trial and error I believe it is
dont you?

Hi, lots of questions here.
Someone said the LE did not know about swimming?
Swimming is great for LE but don't wear your sleeve in the pool.
I would try to find something that works for you to wear at night.
After all wearing a sleeve is a lot less depressing when you are sleeping, and might let you wear it a bit less during the day.
Some people wrap at night, some wear official night sleeves.
I did not do so well with either.
I wear this
http://www.lymphedemaproducts.com/products/cg_arm_...
or my regular day sleeve with a thicker glove.
Hope some of that helps.
For what it is worth I saw my LE doc today, and I have managed to keep my LE from getting worse for 5 years, but it is a pain every day.
If I am wearing a regular sleeve I do the glove thing, it just feels wrong without it, but that is just me.
