My ob/gyn found a lump during my annual. Within days I had a mammogram and then an ultrasound. They did a biopsy and said no cancer but sent me to a breast center. Today they told me my breast tissue is very dense and they cannot see much on a mammogram so they want me to get an MRI. They want me to continue getting MRIs in the place of mammograms. does anyone else do this? I'm not in the clear yet and confused at the order of things here.

My wife has dense breast tissue. She is now dealing with worse cancer after 7 yrs of NED, (in her other breast) if Kaiser Permanante had done an MRI, after a PET/CT scan showed uptake in her lymph nodes (but no primary source) --they maybe would have caught it... my point is, you have good care if they are using MRI follow-up. MRI shows a "shadow around the perimeter" of a mass. Ultrasound shows if it's a liquid center, meaning it's a cyst.(beneign usually)

mammos are not that reliable, even the digital mammogram, if you have dense breast tissue, and you feel a problem, like my wife did, ask for MRI, if dense breast tissue, it's not a perfect science.

mashed, welcome to Breastcancer.org! As you'll learn in the article Having Dense Breasts from our main site, many doctors recommend MRI for women with dense breasts, specially if they already found a lump!

Please come back to let us know how how the MRI goes!

    Best,

Thank you ... just waiting for the insurance to approve the MRI, then we can schedule.
