Exercise and well being during chemo and radiation

Zombies in the rain certainly sums up the Portland experience!
-
Thanks Linda - Kelli would love to wake up Christmas morning to my present to her being doing the Thriller dance! The girls and I often make each other presents - that counts, right?
-
-
Eileen it's been fun learning the dance, maybe we can do it at the lake get together too! It's funny to learn it with the cue words in the video "booty bounce, swim together swim jump" I find myself saying them in my head all the time, it's a nice distraction and a decent workout too. Everything counts!
-
31 mile bike ride, so beautiful this morning. But definitely feel a little effects from Herceptin today
-
Theresa: What form is the k2 in?I can only find it with D.
-
Not food porn. Life porn, maybe? As in, I am very close to a Ruth's Chris and a McCormick and Schmick, but prove myself to be ultra-hot by eating organic, low-fat, high-fiber food from Trader Joe's.
-
I take Complementary Prescriptions Ultra K2 available on Amazon.

And add a three mile beach walk to my exercise, so beautiful out today!
Ksusan, love the life porn. Looks so yummy
-
Definitely life porn. I'd be glad to share it with you....not too crazy about McCormick and Schmicks since they got bought out by a larger chain.
-
8.06 miles, about 40 minutes of which was treadmill.
-
Ks- that was pretty porn for being on the road. Well done! You are a very strong woman

1.5 hrs stairmaster level 7, .5 hrs of weights and resistance- super light weight, first go since radiation ended. Stretches, MLD.
Started off the day right with a spinach omlette, then matters deteriorated into hummus and carrot sticks and crackers followed by a post workout dinner of nori sheets, dried mangoes, cheese, and strawberries followed by 3 chocolate cookies. ( I gotta throw those out!) Also, turmeric ginger pepper green tea decoction slugged down all day. I think it's helping with the post chemo muscle aches! You guys inspire me to do better!!!!!
-
littleblue, you are supposed to eat all your junk food, then never buy it again haha!
-
Jen, you must be happy to be lifting!
Speak to us of this infernal decoction--proportions? Quantity? Taste?
-
Good point T, I like your style! Wish the dang things didn't come in a pkg of 12! I only wanted 1 I swear!
The tea: a handful of dried turmeric root chunks, a knot of fresh ginger sliced, a cope of grinds of black pepper, simmered on low for at least an hour, and poured over a match a tea bag. I'll usually add more water and do it all again at least twicebefor I throw the roots out because turmeric is expensive! Mostly it just tastes like turmeric- kind of peppery and bitter. I have a cup in the morning and a cup at night at least. It seems to help my stiff sore muscles and tendons. Sometimes I'll also throw the used tea roots in a smoothie so as not to waste any. A friend with rhumatoid arthritis suggested turmeric. She uses it instead of aleve for inflamation because aleve bothered her stomach. Warning, though, I think it's a blood thinner.
-
Sounds doable. I'm taking turmeric in capsules, so I might need to alter the mix.
ETA: May I note parenthetical that sleeves and gauntlets are a PITA when trying to eat, use the restroom, not snag the fabric on other people's luggage, etc.? Greetings from DFW.

Hi, everyone. I've not posted much while recovering from surgery, but in the last week I've started walking again. Tomorrow I see the radiation oncologist so will be embarking on that adventure soon, and I'm also going to get started with treatment for lymphedema in my left arm/hand.
My question for all of you exercisers is this: I can tell that I've lost upper body strength, and I'm sure that rads are not going to do great things for that. Did any of you try mild weightlifting--or anything like--while doing rads or in the immediate aftermath? I can't imagine trying to regain strength during the treatment, but I'd like to find a way to not lose more strength. Thanks!
-
rainnyc, I have done weights like twice since surgery, still in fear with the lymphedema thing. But what I do feel comfortable with are good old fashioned calisthenics, like jumping jacks, burpees, and even just lifting my arms up over my head in a semi-circle fashion, like starting with hands at sides, and then bringing them up in an arc to touch over the top of my head and then back down, kind of like a jumping jack motion without the jumping part. You would be surprised how fast arms get tired even with that simple motion. And I figure since they aren't weight bearing, hopefully I'm not contributing to lymphedema risk. I also have these two one pound balls filled with silicone that I lift straight out in front of me from the waist. I guess what I'm saying is strength training doesn't have to involve heavy weights, particularly right now.
3.6 mile beach walk this morning, so nice! Oh, and Brick or Treat last night at Legoland chasing three toddlers around - that should count for something
-
My PT had me stretch during radiation, only allowing low weights afterward.
-
Rainnyc, I've been doing yoga throughout treatment, and I'm now in the middle of rads. Poses like down dog, plank, and chaturanga (odious yoga push-up) provide a reasonable upper body workout. But, upper body strength is definitely a b*tch to build/maintain!
-
I was told no downward dog, but YMMV.
-
Well, I confess I've heard that . . . In the wind . . .but my RO said yoga was fine. She said no heated yoga, though, and I'm grudgingly complying.
-
Thank you! This helps me know what questions to ask the MO and the LE specialist.
-
About 3.5 miles walking--not bad for spending over 12 hours of the day in transit, 20 modified military presses, resistance band, stretches. Took an epsom salt bath and had a glass of hot lemon infusion after leaving sleeves/gauntlets on for 1.5 hours after air travel. I'm going to pop an aspirin (already took my tamoxifen) and go to sleep now!
-
Worked a 12 hr today helping with county search and rescue cave training. Lots of slithering around under ground in the mud. Good times!
-
there has to be a joke in slithering around in the mud on your belly. I just can't come up with it.
Ksusan, save me, some of your witticism please!
-
Littleblueflowers: slithering about through caves in the mud on your belly sounds like a fantastic way to spend the day. Well, to me! Not least because of the (I'm presuming) implied return to normalcy.
-
Hiked from 1000 to 1730 today, and did some excellent bouldering on my lunch break. Didn't think my upper body and balance would be up to it, but surprise! Of course, then I got stuck on top of the formation and had to wedge my fat ass in a crack and slide down between two boulders to get down LOL. And now- my shoulder on my Rads side is killing me. But, it hurt before. Especially when I breath. Does anyone else have back and side pain from rads? Its definitly muscles, not lungs...
-
I have intermittent pain over my ribs and clavicle.
