lacey - sounds like you are feeling better, hope so! Food poisoning is not fun! I have had it twice, once after a date in high school - strawberry shortcake - still can't eat it, and once after a wedding. A number of the wedding guests got it, which I am sure was embarrassing for the bride and groom - all I remember was that my husband was a member of the wedding party so I went home without him but was so ill and DD was less than a year old, she kept waking up and I had to throw up while holding her because she was crying - and this was out of town so we were not home either! The worst!

auntie - the Amish chicken sounds yum!

susan - I am very willing to share the floorplan, but it is not really a "kitchen" since it just has the grill and no stove, it is more of an outdoor grill space. We have purchased a grill that is gas on the left and charcoal on the right, and we will have a sink, and a 4 cubic foot fridge. DH is angling for a beer tap, but so far I am holding him off. His birthday will take place during the build so I might surprise him with it. The structure will be clad with stacked stone and the counters will be granite that matches my granite in the house. You can see this space while standing in the indoor kitchen so I thought it should match. It is positioned in the covered corner of the pool cage at the farthest away point. We have a sitting area between the door from the house and where this will be located. The contractor sent a rendering but I am having some trouble attaching it - will see if DD can figure it out for me.

Special, that sounds like such a fun project and space to have. I am always impressed with how much use DS1 and his family get out of their outdoor kitchen space for entertaining by the pool. Next time I am there, I will have to notice all the appliancesAnd with your weather you will get more than six months worth of use.
Also, I was horrified reading your food poisoning experience. You feel so vulnerable and out of control when that happens, I can't imagine the added stress of needing to care for someone in the process. Lordy! In fact, this weekend, as sick as I was, I was so consciously comforted by the "other room" middle of the night presence of DH and DS2 who continued to ask what they might do to help me. I can see why you recall vividly what you endured with the poisoning after that wedding. Yikes!!

I just went thru my whole NH kitchen (now I'm glad that it is pretty small) to cull outdated foods and sort what can be safely left in the fridge in case we come up this winter (unlikely...I hate the idea of creating ice dams if there is snow on the roof, which would partially melt when we heat up the house). As annoying as this organizing job is, there is always satisfaction in having it done! And this year, I have added notes on my iphone about what I must replenish for the next time we come up, so I feel quite organized.

DH shelled "my" take out lobster and crab legs, so we will do something with that meat for early dinner. I may try some, but I'm still pampering my stomach...tho did fine with a little of my friend's non spicy spaghetti dinner last night.
Later, after cleaning, we close up and head home. Am envying folks who can just hitch the RV/living space up to a truck, and no need to keep opening and closing up. But really do love being here between work efforts! It's almost too bad to leave since we are getting closer to peak foliage now....late this year. Beautiful!

lacey - in addition to DD being less than a year old, I also had DS who was 2 - but could at least understand. Unfortunately, DH was one of the groomsmen and had a significant amount to drink, so he was pretty useless, lol! I did make him drive home with both kids though - even though he had a hangover, as penance. I drove alone with some Sprite and saltines. I am excited about the outdoor project - we will get 12 months of use - there is no time of year here that would keep us from using it - so it seems like a good investment, but this will be a modest effort - I have seen some very deluxe ones here. I was pretty surprised about the variation in cost from company to company, but I am happy with our choice - reasonable and a super nice guy. Hitching the house to a truck would be great - have you seen any of those shows about mini houses, where you can actually do that? Both of my kids need one of those - they seem to be a bit nomadic - it would be perfect for them!

Today was a baking day - I made cupcakes and cranberry/orange muffins for the bake sale at the Women's imaging center attached to my BS office - and took some variations on Halloween pumpkin decorated cupcakes to my hairdresser. She is doing a baby reveal party for her sister on Halloween - so she wanted cupcakes that were either pink or blue in the middle and looked like pumpkins on the outside. I did six different looking ones but she liked the ones that look like this. These are not mine but looked similar except that I used a pretzel stick for the stem:

Mr. 02143 picked me up from a long, and tiring client meeting tonight and off we went to dinner. I had forgotten to make a reservation and then wasn't sure I wanted a "special" dinner... cause today I turned 57. I made it to another year! Unlike SpecialK, at this point, I want my family to pay attention! I have never asked for much on b-days, but my outlook has changed. Now, I don't want strangers to sing. I don't want business colleagues to know. But, I do want to mark these days with those that actually matter to me.

We over ordered... I have food for at least two more meals.

Susan, a very happy birthday to you! Enjoy these moments indeed. There are few holidays I personally care about (Thanksgiving being the exception, since it revolves around food and family), but birthdays require special attention in my world. So celebrate!

    SK, cute cupcakes!

Tonight wasn't exactly leftovers, more like a redux. Sunday I made chicken stock and dumplings to go along with the baked chicken. I made the stock from necks, wings and backbones from the new chickens, along with some parts I had stashed in the freezer. It was delicious -- the dumplings, not so much. So I decided to keep the stock, discard the dumplings and make new ones. These were way more successful so I added a large chicken breast to make it more of a main dish meal and we enjoyed it with some sliced tomatoes from the garden.

We are expecting temperatures in the 30s by the weekend so I expect that will do it for the tomatoes. I will be quite sad because they've been wonderful this late in the season.

Yay, Cubs!!!!! I would not have bet 5 cents on their beating the Cardinals. DH really enjoyed those winning games. He has been a Cubs fan for many years.

Happy Birthday, Susan. 57 seems so young to me. I loved my 50's and was fortunate not to be dx'ed with bc during that decade.

Lacey, I learned this fall that not hitching up the camper involved a lot more work than hitching up the camper and towing everything home.

Dinner tonight was crappie fillets from MN. They were delicious. I heated the oven to 400 degrees and also heated a pan with butter in the oven while it was coming to temperature. I seasoned the fish and plopped the fillets into the hot butter. They were tender in a matter of minutes. The side was steamed yellow squash and a salad for dh.

I will be buying a half pig grown in MN. It will cost about $100 and be about a hundred lbs of pork. The processing will be about $75. It will be transported to TX and we will have to drive there and pick it up. The farmer is the FIL of the owner of Pine Hollow Resort. I'm not sure what breed of pig it is. That's a lot of pork for two people. I will have to cook many pork Sunday dinners!

Susan - HAPPY B-DAY. By all means, celebrate. Make it last a week if you can. I've started treating myself to some small thing I've been wanting.

Dinner Sunday night was grilled cheese (Jarlsberg) and last night was a tuna sangy because I still hadn't made it to the store yet and the fridge was empty. But since I was catching up on sleep for 10-12 hours a day, I didn't really care. I did manage to buy produce & milk today and a rotisserie chicken, but ended up just eating some slices from the fresh loaf of Ciabatta bread. I must say, the sourdough rolls on the cruise were great and the butter was very good. I ate 3 rolls every night. And yes, I did gain 10 lbs that will have to be worked or dieted off somehow. Normally I only eat one meal a day, and a very small supper like salad or soup or apples only. Three meals a day plus appetizers and dessert was a killer.

Nance - sorry to hear about the end of the tomatoes. We didn't get many this year. Too wet and then too hot. I came back from the lovely fall temperatures up the East coast to 88 degrees & today was 92.

As a die-hard Cardinals fan, I'm heartbroken about their loss. But even so, it's hard not to feel at least a little happy for the Cubs and their fans. They've waited a long time and deserve to enjoy the moment!

Susan - Happy Birthday - my October sister! I am so happy you had a nice dinner with extras for later! You are right about celebrating with the ones that matter!

Tonight was a taco salad with chicken. We have a BJ's membership club right down the street and they offered a free 60 day membership, so I took it and went the other day and bought a LOT of chicken breasts, with skin, on the rib. Roasted them and finally got around to pulling all the meat off - so used some in the taco salad for tonight. Also, made a green salad with chicken and veggies for DD to take to work, and made regular chicken salad (with onion/celery/mayo/parsley) for DH's lunch tomorrow. Chicken, chicken, chicken!

I am sad for the Tampa Bay Rays to lose coach Joe Madden, but it looks like the Ray's loss is the Cub's gain! Can't help but be happy for their success, long overdue. I always root for St. Louis because I was actually college friends with Ozzie Smith, and he was such a longtime player there, but I'm feelin' the Cubs.

smurfette - glad you have a hubs that spoils you!

Special....adorable cupcakes!! And you reminded me that I must sometime USE that free 60 day membership that BJs mails to me every few months. Several years ago I stopped getting big box store memberships, but do like some of their offerings. And your "hitch the house" reference made me laugh since often when we go away, DH suggests we just hitch the whole house to the car. ;) when we built our lake house, we used to muse about how neat it would be to just jump in the car and go.....right?? Wrong!! There are always a lot of supplies that need to be brought.....and then, sometimes, returned home....depending on their expiration dates! ;). Silly us!

Smurfette, happy that your DH is taking good care of you. H-E-A-L fast and well!

It is VERY late after a busy day closing up the lake house....then I drove us home after DH got to watch the Cubbies (very little traffic, yay!), unpacked here (more organizing!!), and relaxed. But I am pretty jacked up so decided to post....I am such a night owl!! Always have been. Will never understand how I held a job for which I needed to arise at 6AM!

Anyway, Nance, I have to say, while we watched the Cubs game, I felt for you. How disappointing... However, having recently been at Wrigley with DS2 and Chicago girl, we have adopted the Cubbies as our fave Nat'l League team....at least for a while. ;) The historical scenario is so similar to that of our Sox. And boy does that city love their sports teams!

Susan, so glad that your birthday dinner was OUT!! And that you might be able to make it a birthday rest of week by the sound of the portion sizes. Perfect!

I am excited that I was able to eat some of the lobster salad I made, before we hit the road, with no ill effects. Yay!

Minus, glad you are catching up on some needed rest!

I think I might need to catch some ZZZZs now.....

DH chose lamb chops out of a choice of lamb, beef, pork or chicken for dinner. I bought gorgeous (expensive) loin chops at Winn Dixie this week. I can justify the expense when I think about ordering lamb at a good restaurant. We'll have asparagus as the veggie side and a lettuce salad with additions.

Smurfette, there's nothing like a caring dh to help you recover from bc surgery and to lend support through whatever treatment follows. What is he cooking for you? We're extremely inquisitive about what people are eating!

It's a lovely day here and I'm doing house cleaning, out of choice. Actually I'm doing a fall version of spring cleaning. The stuff will be accumulating for the Veterans charity truck to pick up. I no longer cart things off to Goodwill after learning it's a for profit business.

Yes, it is, Sunshine. It does hire people with disabilities. That's the reason, I assume, that people can claim donations as charitable contribution.

I'm confused about the Goodwill "for profit" comment since Charity Navigator gives them a high rating. But it looks like there are discrete GoodWill industries in different geographical areas. I regularly donate my clothing and small household goods to the VietNam Vets of America. My understanding is that they sell the items and use the proceeds for the VVA programs that support the Vets.
We also have a "generic ministry" in our town which consists of a number of caring folks that keep a van with donated clothing and personal care needs. Twice a week, it goes into Boston with these local volunteers and clothes and other items are distributed to the homeless along with sandwiches. I always know exactly where my clothes donations go when I direct them to this small organization, but I would guess that such groups are rare...and financially hard to keep going.

Just returned from an hour walk during which I stopped at Trader Joes. They didn't have what I was looking for but I noticed that they have the Pesto Gouda cheese that DH and I really like. It has been missing! The cheese manager was there and told me that they just recently brought it back....nice! It's a colorful and tasty one to add to a cheese board around the holidays.

On my own for dinner. So will make my favorite eggs over sauteed kale and veggies. I have no idea why I love that dish so much, but find myself craving it on occasion.

I quit donating to GoodWill a long time ago since the amount of the money that goes to the needy is minuscule. Lately I've been giving everything to Salvation Army or to the local battered women's shelter. BTW - if you stay in hotels, take the shampoo & soap & shower caps, etc. The women's shelters always need emergency "cosmetics".

Was at our Med Center today so I got my shingles shot. It's such a chore to find someone who will give shots in the thigh or butt. Because of the LE, I don't want them in my compromised arms. On the way home I stopped at my favorite (American) Italian restaurant for a Heartland Salad. Several kinds of lettuce. tomatoes, avocados, hard boiled eggs, bacon, etc., and breaded chicken chunks. Yup an oldie and a staple from the early days of this restaurant in 1954. I needed the roughage and ordering the salad got me as much garlic bread as I could eat - which was more than I needed. No dinner tonight.

Guidestar indicates that Goodwill is a non-profit. There is no one Goodwill of course. There are 1000 chapters across the country. As it happens, I generally donate to either the Boys and Girls Club or a battered woman's shelter when we are paring down.

Pantry is getting pretty bare. We ate the rest of the smoked salmon tonight. My body feels that it has eaten too many refined foods lately, so I made some French lentils with mustard and vinegar. The perfect antidote.

Tomorrow we should sign the Purchase & Sale for this house. The lawyers are not working that quickly, so we will see. However, if their lawyer is the holdup, I don't think that there will be a problem. The other side has not yet sold.... not sure why that makes me anxious.

Susan is right and I am wrong. I looked up Goodwill Industries and it is a nonprofit. Apparently the belief that it is for profit has been circulated on the internet. There have been some accusations about overpaid executives and underpaid disabled employees. But I'm glad I didn't haul all those carloads of items over the years to a for profit business. One year I took a load of nice clothes, some of which were still in cleaner's bags, and they were wheeled out into the store on a rack almost immediately. I saw them as I was browsing inside the store.

I am making a vaguely Turkish grilled chicken marinated in yogurt and "Ottoman Spices." Serving with a saffron rice topped with caramelized onions and toasted pine nuts. I will be serving two salads: the first will be with the last of the cherry tomatoes that we picked this afternoon and the other will be a simple green salad with a lemon vinaigrette. Purchase & Sale document is still at the lawyers' offices, and they have agreed that since they are the hold up, it doesn't affect the contract at all. Maybe tomorrow?

Dinner is a gas station pizza and 1.49 screw top Miller Lite that the attendant helped me loosen the lid on before I drove off ( I wasn't drinking and driving, just my wri\ist wouldn't work tonight and I live alone...)

And if one more person tells me to "make my own Happiness" I am probably going to prison for doing just that......

red - I don't know if you meant your post to be hilarious, but it is! Any of who have walked in your shoes understands.

susan - we are holding our breath for the 10 days to elapse during which the buyer of the condo can back out and get their deposit back. That ends on Monday and we have not heard they are developing cold feet, so we are cautiously optimistic. Hoping you get some news soon!

Tonight was Barilla veggie pasta with meat sauce and a wedge salad with red onion and bacon, Greek yogurt ranch dressing. The leftovers are lunch tomorrow for both DD and DH.

I picked out granite and stacked stone for the outdoor kitchen. The granite is sapphire brown, stacked stone is canyon creek - you can google them and click on images. I initially wanted our same kitchen granite, but the sapphire brown has little bright blue flecks and our pool tile is cobalt. It blends with the inside existing granite well enough because it is pretty neutral. Had fun in the granite yard - and also found a slab I want for the bathroom countertops. Turns out that the kitchen contractor will put those in for us too. Yay!

Oh Redheaded, I feel for you.... any chance to get someone in to give you some relief from the renewed difficult dad duty? It is such a challenge. Hugs coming your way!

Susan, your dinner sounded great... The "tandoorish chicken" (?)with saffron rice must be delish!

I think the cool weather got me back into cooking a bit. When I went to the grocery store after class, I bought lots of meats to use in the next couple of days....and salmon for tonight. I marinated it in a teriyaki sauce and baked it. Sides were mashed butternut squashed with ginger, salad of a loose leaf (not paper for your three ring binder!) lettuce, carrots, red onion, and grape tomatoes sprinkled with a new item from Trader's....an olive oil lemon juice mix. It does the job nicely on a naked salad. Last side was a saute of orzo, portobello shrooms, onion, and a sprinkle of balsamic (which I just added to my vegan friendly recipes:). It was all delicious and I took a picture of my colorful plate. ;) Now I know that some folks do not like food porn, so I will hold off on displaying it. ;) But loved those colors!!

Now if only there could be a nice slice of apple pie in this house! ;)

Costco run today. I lucked out and snagged one of their applewood smoked hams. That was dinner along with "butter" beans (which taste nothing like butter otherwise I would love them instead of hating the things) for dh, steamed broccoli and smashed baby potatoes for me, and cornbread. Good stuff.

Red, I feel your pain. My dad just called. He wrecked his car today. He's fine but he rear ended someone at a stop light. I have to go back over there tomorrow to take him around to various places. Of course he got a ticket. Sigh!

Looks like today is a Penzey's day. I need to make some harissa [new recipe] and thought originally that I might need ancho chills. Nope, found them in the pantry but then, I grabbed the jar of cumin seeds and I only have about 4 tablespoons left! This recipe will use 2 of those tablespoons. There is no way I am going to live without cumin seeds in the house. This is a flat-out emergency! I have defrosted some lamb shoulder and will make up some Merquez sausage. Again, a new recipe which I can only hope that we enjoy.
