2nd opinion?

Hi, I'm new here & a little lost. I'm in my mid 50s & healthy. Had routine mammogram last week & they found a cluster of microcalcifications

Had diagnostic mammo yesterday. Dr. said she couldn't tell if it was benign or not & wanted to do a stereotactic (sp?) biopsy. I had one scheduled for tomorrow but cancelled it. I've read that only 15% of microcalcification clusters are cancer, and even those are often just Stage 0. So it doesn't seem worth the misery.

I'm considering a 2nd opinion but have never had one before (I do my best to avoid doctors :) ). Have any of you sought a 2nd opinion before getting a breast biopsy? If so, do you have to start the whole process over again with new mammograms? Or can the 2nd dr. just look at the mammograms taken by the first dr. & base his or her decision on that?

Thanks for any advice

I got a second Oncology opinion but that was after I had the two biopsies for what was originally seen as a cluster of microcalcifications last year at age 62. I wouldn't mess around. While not cancer I have ADH which is precancer . This is the microcalcifications . This is standard protocol for worrisome clustered microcalcifications .

I didn't have a second opinion at that stage, but I did get second and third opinions about adjuvant therapy. The doctors share information so you don't have to repeat tests. They will request copies of your mammograms and other tests.

Thanks for your reply, Ddw79. I'm glad for you that you don't have cancer, that must've been a relief to hear!

I really wish I'd never had this mammogram. There are no lumps, no symptoms, just some specks on an x-ray that are probably benign but there's no way to be sure without letting someone drill a hole in me & pull out chunks of my flesh. Ignorance really is bliss.

Anyway, thanks for your reply, &I hope you continue to remain cancer-free.

Thanks for the info, jctreehugger. That's good to know that you don't have to get more tests when you get a 2nd opinion, because I doubt the insurance would pay for another mammogram this year. Maybe I'll luck out & get dr. who'll say it looks totally benign :)

Bunny, I had a sonogram and the radiologist wanted a biopsy. I didn't want it and I asked if I could have an MRI. She said we need both she was almost certain that I had cancer. My biopsy was a needle biopsy and was not that bad. My tumors were close to the skin. After reading that 80 % of biopsies turn out benign I would want a second opinion too.

You are a braver person than I am, Meow. I'm not sure I'd be willing to go through all you & so many others here have been through. I've been kind of mad the last few days because I just found out by looking at my medical records that I have extremely dense breasts. No one ever told me that & I had no idea how much more difficult that makes it to find tumors on mammograms, till I did some reading on the internet. But maybe it wouldn't have made any difference, because I don't even have the guts to get the biopsy, let alone surgery, chemo, etc.

I see you just passed your 4 year anniversary, Meow! Congratulations & I hope you have many years of good health ahead of you

Welcome Bunnyhuggr! As you can already tell, you've come to a very supportive and helpful place full of knowledge and great advice. We're sorry for the worry that brings you here, but glad you found us!

In addition to learning from member's personal experiences, you may want to check out the main Breastcancer.org site about Getting a Second Opinion. Even when this section is basically designed for those diagnosed, it may help you understand how the whole process works (how it might help you, what it typically involves, etc). And if you ultimately decide that you don't need or want a second opinion, that's fine, too — you've made the decision that's right for you.

Hope this helps! Please keep us posted

Thanks, Moderators! I'm so glad I found this site, it has been so helpful!! And the people here are wonderful.

I did make an appointment today for a 2nd opinion. But it isn't till early Nov. I should've just gone ahead with the biopsy today. I'd have the results tomorrow. But too late now. Now I have to wait 3 more weeks & probably the 2nd dr. will also tell me I need a biopsy.

dr can use the previous information. I am going through it now. My surgeon diagnosed me with 6 new areas in 1 breast. Lobular carcinoma in situ and then 5 polyps both of which put me at high risk now. She suggested monitoring. I went to another surgeon and she is agressive going in for a MRI Monday. Now the 2nd opinion specializes in breast only so I tryst her especially since I found out my biopsy path report had the wrong year on it and my mammogram slides were mislabeled! I will be having these areas removed. I am concerned about disfigurement. So I am thinking about doing a nipple skin sparing mastectomy. I heard good things about the plastic surgeon she uses but I just read a complaint about the same surgeon hes from Columbus indiana so I am sooo confused on who does good breast reconstruction.

Wow Kells! I'm really glad you got a different doctor! It sounds like this 2nd doctor is much better than the 1st place you went. I sure am sorry for all you've been through. It sounds like you've still got a good attitude though.

Do you know what kind of complaint the plastic surgeon had against him? Maybe it was something minor or possibly even unfounded. I'd want to know the details before totally writing him off, especially since your current dr seems to have faith in him

Bunnyhuggr, I too was in perfect health (and in my 60s). I can assure you my core-needle biopsy was not painful--not even the anesthetic needles hurt. Didn’t need ANY Tylenol afterward. Just iced on and off that day. Glad I had it done--better a little discomfort & inconvenience for peace of mind. There’s a difference between benign microcalcifications and a cluster of CIS. Maybe one little spot of CIS would warrant watchful waiting, but a cluster of it does carry the chance of eventual infiltration. And one of those calcifications could already be invasive. You NEED to know, and only a core needle biopsy can determine for sure. That second opinion will probably tell you the same thing. Make sure it’s at a specialty breast cancer center.

The only “misery” I had was the uncertainty before diagnosis--and if you opt to forgo the biopsy you will only prolong the uncertainty.

ChiSandy, thanks for your encouraging words, they're much appreciated! You're right, I'll make myself crazy with worry if I don't have it done. So I rescheduled it for this Friday. I'll take some Xanax & Tylenol beforehand & I'm sure it'll be fine.

Also, I think it more than a little insensitive of me to say in my first post that even if it's cancer it's probably "just" Stage 0. That's insulting to all the people are bravely battling Stage 0 cancer. I really didn't mean to make light of it. I guess I just meant that there might be more urgency if there were a good chance of it being an advanced stage. I apologize to anyone I might have offended.

By the way Sandy, is that your daughter in your profile pic? Or a very old photo of you?? Because you don't look anywhere near 60!

Hi Bunny, I don't want to scare you in any way, I am just going to share my experience. Like you I was only 54 with no family history of breast cancer, no lumps on manual exam, in good health and feeling great. Routine mammo showed a suspicious cluster of micro calcifications that was not seen on previous mammo. I was sent for stereotactic core biopsy like you were. I didn't question that order but I opted to have that biopsy done in the main hospital, not the satellite hospital where the mammos were taken. Biopsy showed DCIS and IDC. All the expectations were, I was very early stage. Final post-surgery results are below.

I don't think there is a point in getting a 2nd opinion before you get biopsy done.

Hi Muska, thanks for sharing your story with me. Don't worry about scaring me. Drama queen that I am I've already convinced myself I have stage IV cancer, so anything less than that will be a pleasant surprise :)

Really I've done lots of reading about breast cancer lately so I'm aware it could be serious. But I also know that knowing it COULD be serious & actually getting a dx like that from the dr. are 2 different things. I don't know how I'd react. It must have felt like a ton of bricks dropped on your chest when you got that news :( How are you doing now? I hope you're well on the road to recovery!

No, I'm not going to get a 2nd opinion before the biopsy. I was just trying to delay the inevitable. My biopsy is scheduled for this Fri

    Hi,

I can completely relate to what you are going through!!! I just posted my first thread. I am just sick with worry! I am almost 42, & just had my 1st mammo last Monday, yes I procrastinated on it. Called me next day for diagnostic then Friday Stereotactic Biopsy. All this in one week & now into week 2 with the stress & sickness awaiting results.

I also had microcalcifications. They were in a branching , linear configuration which is why suspicious. BIRADS4- suspicious.

Good luck to you on your Biopsy! I will be thinking of you!!!

JerseyRenee, I'm sorry, I dropped off this forum for awhile (was in a snit about not being able to get sedation for the biopsy) but I just saw your post & am sorry you didn't get B9 results! But at least they caught it very, very early.

Thank you for your kind words! You are in my prayers

    hi Bunnyhuggr

How are you? Your biopsy is this Friday or you had done already? Well I have been diagnosed, Oncologist appt today then gene test done. Tomorrow is breast surgeon consult. Still need to see plastic surgeon. So I hoping for January for surgery with holidays & my daughter's birthday in Dec. Although Oncologist seemed like that was pushing it. Thank you for your prayers! You will be in mine as well!

Hi JerseyRenee! Since you're going to see a plastic surgeon does that mean you're having a mastectomy? I don't blame you for wanting to wait till after the holidays & your daughter's birthday. I'd probably feel the same way. How long does it take to get the results of the gene test?

I was scheduled for a biopsy last Fri. but chickened out & cancelled :). FINALLY had it done today. A little sore now but the whole thing went so much better than I expected! Will get the results tomorrow.

Thank you so much for your prayers

    Bunnyhuggr:

Yes, I have decided bilateral masectomy is best for me. Being small breasted a Lumpectomy isnt a good option. After take it out it will more likely be a masectomy. Gene results are 4-5 weeks. I am hoping you get a good biopsy result!!! I will be thinking of you!
