Congrats, Horsegirl!

QMC, I need suggestions on how to get through rads while still supporting my sad little natural side, lol. I have some I am wearing now (non underwire per PS) but they are too in the band even though I got them bigger than usual plus the strap rubs on the TE so I can imagine it will not be comfortable once my skin gets more sensitive from rads. I don't mind spending money on maybe two bras.
-
Molly, Everyone is different in how their skin responds, and your skin's response also depends on dose, etc. I had BMX so I did not wear a bra at all during rads. I do know that had I needed a bra, I could not have worn one the past 2 weeks or the week after rads finished. I am 7 days out now. Friends I have that have been in your situation have done the following...... gotten a few comfortable, sports bras a size larger. Get ones that are not binding at all, and are soft material....wear a cami under your bra....No matter what, go to Walmart and stock up on their $1.68 camis. I wore, and still wear these under everything. The marker and lotions ruin clothes otherwise. For the last few weeks, if you cannot wear a bra, wear a cami, and then several layes with something like a sweatshirt on top. You will want things that are loose. You may see a difference between your sides, but no one else will.
-
HorseGirl....Congrats!!!! Rang The Bell.
-
Thank you, Kbeee! That is what I am looking for. I am finding there aren't too many posting that have rads after a mx and me having a umx makes it even harder. I will pick up some camis and at least one bigger sports bra. I have to wear something for work. My work clothing is on the dressier side.
-
Molly....I wore a sports bra that was 2 sizes too big. I got the Fruit of the Loom, 3 in a pack, tank-style for $11 at Walmart. They're also on Amazon. They don't really support much, but they keep the girls from flopping. And the bra is so big that I could pull it down below my normal bra line so it didn't irritate that "skin fold" area. Also if I needed more support, I put a rolled up bathcloth under each breast. That also prevented skin to skin contact which is a heat-retaining, bacteria area. You can't tell the difference in the sizes of your boobs, cause you wind up with a singular uni-boob. You have to be creative as to what type of top to wear cause your headlights (if you have any) will be evident. Layers work good for that. I also loved my "cooling towel". I used it everyday.

They are $19 for 3 on Amazon.

Molly50 I am in a similar boat...I had a UMX and RO wouldn't let me do an exchange before rads (and due to my PS leaving the practice unexpectedly, there was some confusion on whether or not I could get fills, so I didn't, even though now RO says I could have...ugh!) so I am trying to figure out how I'm going to get through rads being lopsided! Right now I put a form in a sports bra so that I'm even, but I'm thinking that when rads starts it may be uncomfortable with a form in there (and with a bra on)...but since I work, I can't really just go lopsided. I am thinking of taking the advice I read about here to get a sports bra a size or two larger, along with some of the famous Wal-Mart camis, and hopefully I can make that work. I'm thinking layers will have to be the name of the game! Either that or I may have to get creative with what I stuff with...maybe a rolled up cooling towel! Haha
Anyway, sim is tomororow! RO says he wants to give me "some time to heal from chemo" but I am 3 weeks out from it already and feeling good so I'll see if I can convince him to start me ASAP!
-
Magnolia...Maybe you can get an electric cooling towel!!! But it might be hard to hide the extension cord. LMAO!
-
Keys-plez. I ordered! Hope they fit! Tell me how soon can I wear after lumpectomy and Axillary dissection?THANK YOU!
-
LAST DAY!!!! Oh my, I am sooooo happy! Had a celebration margarita for lunch
and my coworkers had my desk all decorated when I came back!
Here is me ringing the bell!
And here is my freedom picture!!!
-
LOL Keys-Plez...I could just drag an extension cord around with me
-
Skysquirrel: so glad to see you walking away from the rads treatment area! Hope the margarita was good--certainly it was earned.
-
Congratulations Skysquirrel. What a great photo of you walking away! Magnolia, I am sorry you haven't had fills yet! I finished mine last week. RO would not let me start until I was done. I look sort of even in my bra with good support but braless looks pretty weird.
-
Marijen...I'm sorry you're in our club. But here we are. After my lx I was in a snug surgical bra and was ordered to wear it for 3 days. After that, wear what is comfortable for you. I wore the sports bras for sleeping. But during the day, it was more comfortable for me to keep the girls from bouncing. So I wore a snug bra during the day. But I'm a C/D. If you're smaller, it might not matter.
Bottom line...do what is comfortable for you. These sports bras give you a cheap option.
During rads I swapped around with different styles. Basically I could wear anything for a day or 2. Then when that started rubbing, I would change to something else.
Listen to your body and do what makes sense for you.
-
Hooray, Jessica!
-
SkySquirrel....Yah. Doing the happy dance. Great photo of your leaving.
-
Congrats Skysquirrel!
-
Molly - I wore bras from Walmart by Hanes. They were soft and stretchy and not very expensive. I got one size bigger. They came sizes S to 3X. I also got a bra extender that helped when I felt swollen toward the end. They washed well and gave enough support. The band was close to an inch wide and very soft.
-
Keys-plez, thanks for the advice. I didn't lookwhen I ordered, do these bras attach in the back for extenders?
I also ordered an oversize flannel shirt. We must be nice to ourselves! Denise-G has a nice website for anyone look for scarves and hats. Don't need that yet!! I am here for the long haul. Best information ever all in one place, I love it. Even cancer jokes

It struck me this morning, another way these perky, cheerful techs have been a blessing: Every day they have lined up my marks to the lasers, saying "Looking good!" "Beautiful!" "Perfect!" While they are just doing their job, they speak important words of affirmation over their patients. Took 20 days for it to sink in - all that has been done to me, these words are still true.
Hope all of you remember how beautiful you are
-
Thank you for the bra suggestions! I have shopping to do now! Horsegirl, what a beautiful sentiment.
I got a call from my RT's office. I have to repeat my SIM. They decided to change the angle. Sigh...
-
Horsegirl, such a lovely, positive perspective & reminder! Thank you!
Molly, I'm glad your RT is taking the time to give you the best outcome. I know the changes are frustrating. You've been thru so much getting to this point & I hope it doesn't delay the start of your rads. Keep your chin up!
-
Howdy! I'm on the list but am just now starting my version of this story. I did the sim today and will get zapped for real tomorrow. And then again for 32 more times after that. Weehaw! Here's hoping time flies.
-
The Amazon sports bras are over the head. There is no hook. Maybe some of you could be challenged by that. I've heard the bra extenders were good. I also got some hook in the front bras. Like I said, if something got uncomfortable, I had options. During my most uncomfortable days (that was my 4th and 5th weeks), I would take a different bra to change in to. Someone mentioned scarves. Those are also good to stuff in the bands of your bra when you feel a little rub area. Just listen to your body. If something is uncomfortable, change it, protect it, pad it, cool it, moisturize it, or medicate it if you can. Also, my techs gave great advice.

Thanks Eaglemom for the info. Found out today that my onco score was low, so no chemo, but will start 33 rounds of rads probably next week. Good to know I should be able to continue with work (radiologist confirmed that this should be possible at appointment today as well). Sometimes I think it helps to be in the cleaning business because I get plenty of exercise everyday just by doing my job! Thanks for the info and hope all goes well for you!
-
Congratulations to Horsegirl and Skysquirrel, woohoo!
Take care,
--Sherri, aka EnigmaticFox
-
You can definitely add me to the list, queenmomcat! I saw rads doc today and onco score was low so no chemo, and I go this Friday (16th) to be "form fitted" and will begin 33 rounds soon after. Thanks!
