DIEP Reconstruction in 2 parts?

I have just consulted with one of my area's foremost reconstructive surgeons who does the DIEP procedure. He said he is no longer willing to do both breasts at the same time due to the length of the surgery and complications that could arise from being under anesthesia 10-12 hours. He wants to do one breast then the other 3-4 months later. Has anyone ever heard of it being done like this? I do not think I am willing to put myself through this type of surgery and recovery twice...silicone implants are looking better and better....
