I'm 5'7" almost anyway. I have heard this also but I don't believe it. (Wouldn't all models have cancer then?) For me it is just very bad luck, this was my destiny. I had some benign issues which they now say can be a sign that I would develop breast cancer and my daughter has those same issues, unfortunately. Meanwhile, my mom is fine (thankfully), so I wonder if my mom and dad coming together and having children created some weird genetic issue that I ended up with and I am now passing along to my kids, ugh!

I'm 5' 6". Had 2 sons (1 at 31 and other at 32). Did not breast feed them. Have never been obese. Always very active. 'Good'/well balanced diet. No family HX of any type of cancer for at least 4 generations. Was 63 when DXd.

BUT - I'm IBC which is only between 1% - 5% of all types of BC DXs. I have never heard that height had anything to do with developing any type of BC.

    Interesting, I've never heard this....

I'm 5'2...no family history, first baby at 18 and 2nd baby at 35...breast fed 2nd one. I am however overweight :) I believe lean toward my later in life pregnancy that threw my hormones into an uproar that may have contributed to the cancer.

Interesting for sure. I have not heard this either, but I am 5'9". I didn't have my kids though until 31 and 33 - wasn't able to breastfeed.

Tang, You sound like you might think your weight was a factor, I know that is another thing that we are told but nope I don't think so -don't even think of blaming yourself not even for one second. Breast cancer in my opinion, effects anyone and everyone no discrimination with this disease.

Thanks musiclover, I have at times felt that was it....I mean honestly breast cancer came out of left field for me! It didn't that my own father said he thought it was my weight. *sigh*

I am not a doctor but I think you understand what I am saying. I have read that fat cells contain estrogen or something like that but plenty of thin people are diagnosed. I think that when these risk factors are listed they are honestly trying to help people but nothing has clearly helped anyone. I followed all of their suggestions for years yet here I am.

This is interesting. I'm 5'7". If it helps, I'm 27, no children. Slightly underweight, not too healthy a lifestyle - the occasional partying and getting smashed, overworking, 3-4 cigs a day, fried fatty food. Daily 30 min walks. No family history.

I'm 5' 7.5". I breast fed both my kids a long time until they got teeth. I attribute my breast cancer in part to nursing them--with my second child I developed a wicked case of mastitis exactly where my breast cancer began many years later. Inflammation does cause breast cancer. I have no family history of bc and am brac I and brca II negative. Weesa

My dad sent me that study. I am choosing not to worry about it--already got bc, and what can I do about my height? I was 5'10"--more like 5'9" now and 132 pounds (underweight for my height). I was a reasonable 144lbs for many years, but I had a bad tummy bug before being diagnosed with bc and lost weight and then more after my mx when I changed my diet. I have been tracking my calorie intake on myfitnesspal, and it's amazing how many calories I need to maintain my weight. It's been hard for me to do on the new diet (less sugar and meat).

5' 7" Seems to me there is a great mix of height here to question that study? As a baseline what is the average height anyway? I am sure it varies from race/country/diet amongst other variables...

    More study...

I am or at least was at my tallest 5'10". It seems either yardsticks or I have shrunk to 5'8.5" in the last 10 years. I am 56. I had two sons at 34 and 36 and breast fed them both for 9-10 months. I am also overweight. I do have a strong family history but did the genetic testing and am negative for all known cancer genes. There were two variant genes but nothing known to cause cancer.

I am 172cm, which is almost 5'8". Taller than average, but not especially so. I have always been within normal BMI. At my heaviest, I had a BMI of 22 or so. I have one daughter, who was born when I was 28 and who was breastfed for one year. I have always eaten a relatively healthy diet and been at least somewhat physically active.

I'm 5'2" and have weighed around 110 my entire adult life - now age 59, diagnosed at 50, no kids. No known family history although we're not sure about my paternal grandmother who died institutionalized in the 1940's...

I'm 5'7, had my kids in my mid to late twenties, breastfed both of them for a total of two years between them, never been overweight, always fit and active, no family history, never smoked or drank more than a glass of wine with dinner.

    It's a crap shoot.

I was 5' 7" but now at 75 years of age I am 5' 6.5 ". Breast fed first baby for only about 2 months and never breast feed the following two sons. No family history, average weight my whole life, very active (until I took tamoxifen), have always eaten lots of veggies but not organic, until I was diagnosed. Would it even have mattered??? But I was on the estroderm patch when I was about 57 and I was given provera to take with the patch......so I guess I feel the provera may have had something to do with my bad luck. Yes, it clearly is a crap shoot.

Weesa, you said you think mastitis triggered your bc in the same location. It occurs to me that it could be the other way around. Maybe a small tumor clogging a duct contributed to the mastitis. (I'm no expert. Just a thought.)

wow--that is a provocative thought! Thinking about it, though, there was a long time span between the mastitis and my bc diagnosis--about 30 years. A few thermographs along the way always showed the mastitis spot as being abnormally warm. At any rate, it is important for women to note that if they breastfeed and have mastitis, they might have chronic inflammation which can lead to bc. (I have learned this connection from several reliable sources.)

Don't mean to highjack this thread of Tectonic's into a breastfeeding history--it does seem from a quick perusal that we are a taller-than-average group with a few outliers. Would be interesting to do a poll, though, to see how many of us had lengthy breastfeeding histories and got bc anyway.

Weesa, define lengthy. I nursed my babies for a total of two years. My kids were born 18 months apart so I only had a six month break from nursing between the two.

Jillian--your story and mine are alike! I had my first child at 28, breastfed him for about 7 months, got pregnant when he was nine months old, and his young brother was born when my first child was 17.5 months old. I breastfed him as well until he got teeth and started to chew on me. I would think "lengthy" would mean 6 months or so--that is currently what most pediatricians recommend as a breast feeding length of time long enough to give the child a good start in life. I think what happened with my second child was he was not as prolific a feeder as my first one, or I produced more milk the second time around. I did not pump, and developed a red, swollen breast and a fever when I became engorged in my right breast which is the one with bc.
