Seroma and Chemo

Hi everyone,

I have stage 2 breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy 3 weeks ago and lymph node dissection 2 weeks ago. I have my first visit with the oncologist next Monday. I found out yesterday that I have a seroma in my armpit where the axillary lymph nodes were removed. The doctor put me on antibiotics to prevent an infection but did not drain the seroma. I am wondering if the presence of the seroma will delay my chemotherapy.

Dear CancerinMN, Welcome to the community. We are sorry that your breast cancer diagnosis and post surgery issues have brought you here but we are glad that you reached out. While you are waiting for others to respond you may want to read more about Seromas on our website. You can also do a search of the word seroma in the blue tool bar to your left and perhaps locate other posts where people have had this complication. Keep us posted on how things work out for you. CancerinMN: My oncologist had me get my single seroma drained before my chemo doses (2 so far, Herceptin and Taxotere). The first time, I had it emptied two days before, and some seroma had re-collected. It got a bit inflamed (hurt, and skin reddish) but the ER docs said it was not infected (had fever 4 and 5 days after chemo, hence the ER visits). The seroma was emptied the evening before the second dose (last Thursday) and this time there isno reaccumulation that I can tell, no pain or redness in the area.

So in short, at least my seroma did not delay chemo, but your doc may recommend getting it emptied. Or not.

    Hope all goes well :)
