NeuVax Vaccine Trial

Has anyone participated in the NeuVax Vaccine trial or heard anything about it? I am eligible to participate but am undecided. It's currently in the third phase and I haven't heard anything negative except that it's a double blind study. Thoughts?

I am in a phase II neuvax trial that combines neuvax with herceptin. It is an awesome trial, I would definitely recommend it to anyone. In my research I think the best hope us cancer patients have after standard treatment is a vaccine like this and also Hercpetin for her2-low patients. If you are her2-low (1+ or 2+) you would also be eligible for this trial, there are several centers and more opening up, the one I am in is based in Santa Rosa, CA.

I have had no real side effects, I go on with my everyday life and just go once every three weeks to get my infusion and vaccine injection. From what I understand there is a good chance it actually can delay recurrence for a good little while.

I guess this is a long trial, as I'm considering it now. I meet all of the criteria but can't enter until I'm done with treatment, which will be when I finish radiation in mid-November. I'm not sure I want to deal with the possible side effects of Herceptin, when it isn't part of the standard of care for my low HER2 expressing cancer, with the chance of being in the arm of the trial that doesn't get the vaccine.

Just want to clarify that the Neuvax Herceptin trial is open to a restricted tissue type, so until you are tissue typed (like for an organ transplant - nothing to do with breast cancer) you won't know if you can enroll. Also, you will not know if you are receiving the vaccine, or the GM-CSF injection

Thanks, SpecialK. I know from other threads that you're very well informed about clinical trials and BC in general. I appreciate your input. I think I've been tissue typed already, if that's the HLA blood marker issue, and I meet the study criteria. And, yes, I know I won't know if I get the vaccine or not. I guess I'm not sure it's worth getting Herceptin if I'm not getting the vaccine. Also, I don't understand what conclusion they would draw if I don't have a recurrence. Will follow with another post as tablet is being difficult.

if I don't get the vaccine, would they conclude that Herceptin is an appropriate treatment for HER2 negative BC? If I do get it, then is it the Herceptin or the vaccine that was effective? I just don't understand why Herceptin is involved. I'm seeing my MO tomorrow. Maybe he can explain it.

Bluedog - my understanding of the trial informational goals is to check cardio toxicity, immune response (by labs after injection and by localized response - for me in the GP2 trial that was similarly set up, measurement of welt at the injection site was how the local response was quantified)and effect of these drug combos on DFS at several time checkpoints. Also, because this trial is open to low Her2 expressors, but not zero expressors, they are trying to determine whether there is benefit in low expressors receiving Herceptin.
