DCIS & Blood Pressure
Ladies,
I was diagnosed on 9/18. I'm in good health, exercise regularly and I'm within my recommended weight and BMI. Up until this point I've never had a blood pressure issue. Since my diagnosis my BP is boarder line high. Today not in a doctor's appointment it was 143/90. My pulse was 64. Has anyone experienced that? I'm wondering if this is the new norm or this is the stress of diagnosis.

I am betting the stress of diagnosis.
-
I'll bet so too. My blood pressure is usually around 100/72 but it would be high when
i went to oncology clinic. Not at any of my other doctors
-
Interesting. My blood pressure was always low, but now when I go to the doc (any doc) it is high. They call it "white-coat (being around docs/hospitals) syndrome". When usually low people have high readings at the doc's office. Well. I never had that until my BC episode, so I guess I've been affected, emotionally. I got a GOOD BP cuff for home (Omron) and when I test at home, BP is fine. I guess the readings at the doctor's office is MY new normal. Try doing it at home, for a period of time, every few days. Follow instructions that come with the cuff carefully. My doc finally decided (after I brought my cuff there, and it was shown to read the same as theirs) my BP is fine, just not at visits.

I see now you tested yours at home. All I can say is this has also happened to me, since the BC episode, but when I calm down and re-take it at home, the following levels are fine. Maybe you could try that. I did not say, usually my first reading at home is also high. After a few deep breaths; much better.

Hi May, it's most likely the stress of diagnosis and the worry that the office visits bring. I had the same issues, and my blood pressure is now much better, even in physician's offices. I am not still seeing a medical oncologist, but the bp was high there when I did. The surgeon's office (nurse) and rad onc office don't take blood pressure.

Another vote for stress here. For decades, my BP has been below 120/85. Since diagnosis, I've been up in the 130s/90s. I was pleased to see it was at 122/80 when I went to the dermatologist today. That's the lowest it's been in months, but in the old days that would have been high for me.

Funny, at my last visit to my MO my blood pressure was high, but an hour later for my usual ObGyn it was back to normal. I'm thinking that a "cancer" doc is a scary thing for me.

This treatment has got me so over my white coat hypertension. My office BP is better than it's ever been.
-
Another one who developed “white coat syndrome” here .... it was better at my last appointment in July though.
-
I don't have this issue but accompanied a friend to chemo who did - part of the solution for her was not to take her BP right when she arrived - but later in the appointment, often after she spoke with her doc

my Bp is high at the oncologist. I commented to the nurse about it and she said, "well you are at a cancer center". Mine is normal at home

Special K - that’s how I figured out what was going on. One day at my radiation oncologist check-up, the nurse wasn’t around so I saw the Dr. first and then she came in and took my vitals afterwards ... and they were perfectly normal! Decided not to worry about it after that. Don’t have a home monitoring device - even though it was higher than pre-cancer, it was still only borderline hypertension so after a full cardiac workup, they stopped worrying about it.
