Yay for no LE ksusan!
Haven't been posting much here...but I'm keeping up with my walking I'm happy to say. 3 mi treadmill + steps = 5 mi today
Can't wait for my first PT appt this week so I can start working out my arms. I can't believe it took me so long for me to get a referral for this appt, after I kept asking and asking...ugh! They all kept telling me I didn't need it, but I finally got it

ksusan - that's great news about no LE on a short flight. Will you also wear a glove (in addition to the sleeve) on flights? My doc only gave me a sleeve, but others have mentioned the glove. I'm curious as to what your doc or PT suggested.
-
Sleeves and gauntlets. -
I had issues in the past while flying so I got a sleeve and gauntlet. I have a flight to SF coming up 10/17 to see my youngest daughter and I'm just going to wear it as a just in case. Figure better safe than puffy. And besides it's bright purple how can I turn down an opportunity to wear a bright purple arm thingy?
No exercise yesterday to speak of - read an entire book on the couch. I'm heading to the lake in a little bit & there will be much hiking to be done.
-
So, how do you know if you need a sleeve? Everyone who had nodes removed?
-
Lynn- I think what is often recommended is that you get measured for a sleeve before any LE shows up. (Some are measured even before their SLNB) if you later experience swelling they then have a baseline to compare and some idea of what your sleeve should be measured at. If you needed one. Some people may get a sleeve prophylactically, if they anticipate there may be some very long plane flights, or a particular type of work or exercise that would carry a high risk of triggering it.
-
Exactly what Katy said. My surgeon was adamant that I get measured for a sleeve before surgery and that the fitter have all my baseline measurements on file from the get go. I wear a sleeve every day, my surgeon encouraged that especially through rads. If I skip a day with the sleeve I can feel the swelling in my upper arm but so far I've not had anything blow up down around my hands. My LE therapist says that's when it starts to get harder to manage and sometimes requires the compression wrapping.
Sharon, how is your LE? Is it back to normal or still an issue?
-
After seeing your posts, I'm upset that none of my providers discussed lymphedema with me and I had 9 nodes removed. Thankful that I don't seem to have issues, but what if I had? Glad to see what others are doing, and I should have done this sooner but now pushing to have myself evaluated so I can try to avoid it for the future. Sorry to those having to deal with LE now.
Sometimes it seems like there is just so much to keep up with...

Hi ladies! Survived the wedding, the hugs, and the prayers from strangers. On LE sleeves and such- I wear my sleeve when I remember/when I do something active or drive over mountain passes. I have a gauntlet too. So far so good! I'd rather not find out that I need it, if you know what I mean. 16 nodes out.
-
I would just wear them preventatively, but read one meta-analysis saying they could cause LE. Guess it would be good to read the studies that assertion is based on.
-
Ksusan - ugh. That would be a whole new kettle of a annoying! Also, congrats on a successful flight!
-
Went to the lake with the hopes of repeating last week's marathon of hiking/walking/stair climbing. My friend came up much later than he was supposed to on Saturday - took a mile walk w/ some stairs (fitbit ran out of charge, I'm estimating). Woke up to quite the rain storm. Much needed so I'm not complaining but today was supposed to be long hike day.
-
14 miles this morning helping a friend get back in the bike riding game, so super slow but super fun. Trying for a more aggressive ride today with my hubby if we can find a window in the rain.
Eileen, sorry about the hike. We are in Big Bear October 15-18. Maybe we can meet up for a hike? I'm totally okay with driving to Lake Arrowhead and meeting up with you there to hike, if you don't mind that hubby and little dog come too!
-
Bummer, Eileen. I was jealous you were going to hike today but I still wish you were able to go.
-
Theresa: I have a fill on the 15th then hit SF to visit my youngest on the 17th. But let me know when you are headed up next - it would be so fun to meet you.
-
Darn, okay! Next time! I would love to figure out where to hike around the Lake Arrowhead area.
-
There's one we always do because it's a hot second from the house, but there are tons.
-
Okay awesome. When we get together, you can show me!
-
Been just trying to get my 10,000 steps in each day. Last week and this week are my busiest, craziest weeks of the year at work...coupled with last 2 weeks of rads... Overwhelming. I did arum Race for the Cure 5k in 30:26 yesterday. Not bad for chemo poisoned and burnt to a crisp. I held my arm out to thecdidebthecwhoke time; just glad I did not elbow anyone
-
Kbee- so very proud of you. You always inspire me. And I thought it was fantastic that you got to do it with your kids. And they did well too! One finished with a great time, and the other learned (too young) what it means to fall, then get up and finish! I can see the apples didn't fall very far from the tree!
-
lest we forget how much 10,000 steps is, my normal, healthy friend (okay, maybe not entirely normal since she likes me!) has been tracking her steps on some iPhone app, and she averages 4,500 per day! So 10,000 steps is a huge accomplishment, and more than most other people do!
Online it says 10,000 steps is equivalent to 5 miles!
Go sisters!
-
1hr stairmaster. Survived the wedding. Pretty sure I caught a cold...
-
I'm five foot tall. My average step is 24 inches. 10,000 steps is 3.8 miles for me. Sorry. I'm a geek.
I've been lurking for a while and almost gave up with this group cause ya'll are totally out of my league. My rads are done and ya'll are still out of my league, but I'm ready to get active again.
I've been a slug since dx. I work full time at a sit down job with a 2 hour round trip commute. I have limited opportunity to walk. Last week my goal was 4000 steps a day. I averaged 4200. This week I'm shooting for 5000/day.
-
Keys- Welcome! I'm glad you took your invisible superhero cloak off.
You have very much misinformed yourself. We are all not out if your league. In fact, I am not yet back into your league, haha!
Point is, no rules here except no rules, support each other, and it all counts. Walking steps at work, parking at the far end of the parking lot. Etc etc You don't have to report in, tell us how much or how far. But we do like to say hi a bit, share info, ask for help.
Hoping you start to feeling better and stronger every day!
-
Keys (and Jackbirdie and whomever): did you do more than you did yesterday, last week, last month, when you were going through [insert treatment here]? Then you succeeded. Doesn't matter if you're talking two steps and I'm talking thirty-two laps.
-
quantity doesn't matter. My osteopath said look, just walk half an hour to an hour everyday. When I exercise, I try to make sure when I'm done I am energized. Like today, I did a leisurely bike ride, came home energized, and wanted to clean the whole house lol. The level each person needs is different.
The important thing is "do", as in just do something for yourself, whatever that is. And feel good afterward. If it's taking a walk to admire the neighbors flowers, that is great stuff
-
italychick..You can't fool me. I've seen your leisurely bike rides. 20, 30, 40 miles. Outta my league. Lol
-
I haven't been posting much because my workouts are so boring but I am up to an hour on the elliptical. I want to go back to Jazzercise. I am wondering if I should meet with the lymphedema experts first? I had 2 nodes removed.
-
Keys - I love that you did the math. I'm just shy of 5 ft tall and I have noticed that my 10k steps are around the same as yours. One of my friends is 6'2, next time we are walking around I'm going to have to have our individual step counters going.
-
We awoke to a young opossum in our bathroom and wild turkeys in our front yard.
This weekend, I did the trial flights suggested by my PT/LE--1+2 hours each way (two flight segments), without compression gear, resulting in no signs of LE. I did have sleeves/gauntlets in my carry-on just in case. If I develop LE or take flights of 4+ hours, I'm to wear the stuff.
The weekend's Santa Cruz/Monterey critters were dolphins, sea otters, a whimbrel, two peregrines, and a couple of common murres (among other birds), but they were all in nature rather than in civilization.
My sister should be done with her wire placement and on track for surgery this afternoon.
