DCIS surgeries done, have a question about healing
Hello,
I had my first DCIS surgery 9/3, I had a partial mastectomy with a tissue transfer, then had to have a reincision on the 16th. I have gone back to the surgeon about minimal bleeding on the side where the dcis was. The NP put sterie-strips on both T-incisions. The sterie-strip came off on the left breast (the dcis side) but there is still some very slight oozing. I was, instructed to gently clean the area with peroxide. Is that enough or should I be more concerned? Should I also ask my dr about grade of my diagnosis? I see that a lot the stage & grade.
Also I have a mammo tuesday as pre-radiation prep? How can they do one if I'm still healing?
Thank you ladies!

Hi - Cannot speak to the incision issues, myself. I can say that I was very concerned about the pre-rads mammo because I could not imagine how that could be done without a lot of pain, and wondered if it would hurt my healing process. The RO was very convincing when he explained that, simply, if I did not have the pre-rads mammo, and anything bad was still in there (and then I had rads, without the mammo), worst case scenario would be a mastectomy pretty soon after. That was all he needed to say. As it happened, it was not particularly painful, and did not harm my healing at all. It just needs to be done.

Hi BB, I was concerned about my pre-rads mammo, too, especially since I had an infection in one of my incisions shortly after surgery. The tech knew I had just had surgery and was very careful. For example, she said she would adjust the compression on the machine manually so that it would be only as tight as necessary but no tighter. It was the most uncomfortable mammogram I've ever experienced, but it was manageable. I recommend taking Advil or something similar about 30 minutes ahead of time.
You should ask your doctor for a copy of the post-surgery pathology report, which should contain info about stage and grade. Once you have the report, this guide will help you interpret it: http://www.breastcancer.org/Images/Pathology_Repor...
As for the oozing, it should be fine as long as it's a small amount and it doesn't contain pus. If it looks like pus or has a bad odor, it could be a sign of infection.

Can't help you with radiation info, but I can help you with wound healing issues. I have had wound problems after two surgeries and was treated by a certified wound nurse. I was told to NEVER use hydrogen peroxide on a healing wound. It kills the new cells forming, not just germs. They had me wash with soap and water, pat dry with a fresh wash cloth, put some antibiotic ointment in it, and place a gauze pad over it to catch the drainage. They gave me blue tape to cover the gauze so the drainage wouldn't spot my clothes. -
Completely agree about hydrogen peroxide!

Thanks! I actually spoke to my surgeons office and they pushed back the mammo & simulation, going this week. The healing is pretty much done! Thank goodness.....I will ask about the reports for the grade.
Thank you!
