Nipple advice needed!
very torn - my PS wants to graft skin from my thigh and build nipples and then tattoo the areola. I'm torn between this and just doing straight 3d tattoo via Vinny Myers. PS is concerned the 3d tatts will fade over time. Any thoughts? My fear with the graft nipples are I don't want perpetual headlights. He promises they will be low profile and I can still go bra-less. Please help me decide!!!

even after all my surgeries - it was important to me to have the nice fipples lol
results are low profile and Vinny Myers tatts and detracts from my delayed DIEP scars

Just throwing this out there ... but did you consider a skin sparing nipple sparing mastectomy? I was so thankful to be able to retain my nipple and areola complex as well as the entire skin pocket. I realize it's not an option for every woman, but sometimes you hear women write after surgery that they'd never heard of any of these options.

I'm going for my Vinnies hopefully in May. I did order Pink Perfect bold nipples from the Cure Diva website, a little pricy but they look great, very realistic. I figured I can go flat or pop on the Pink Perfects for a little projection. I don't want any more scars on my body so do not want nipple recon.
-
I had done the three d tattooing though a women here where I live and they have faded. I had my areoles tattooed and sm. nipples made yesterday. The doctor mad a sm incision and placed alloderm matrix under to give an illusion of a nipple will see tomorrow when I take the dsg off to shower.

Thank you everyone for your input. Still very torn on this but appreciate your candid thoughts

I just had 3D nipple tattoo (Vinnie Myers) on Thursday 8/20 and I am so happy ! They look very real. I was also torn like you - I actually had "origami" nipple recon scheduled twice but had so much anxiety I finally realized I just didn't want to be cut anymore. Then I called & made the Vinnie appointment & never looked back.
After my tattoos were done, I wanted to jump up & click my heels after I walked out the door LOL. I just feel like it's (hopefully) the final "finished stamp" and I can try to start forgetting this whole ordeal.
-
Lisa- thanks for your input. I'm leaning on doing the Vinny myers tats as well. Did you do Baltimore or Nola
-
Sorry for the delayed response Swimmom2 I forgot to re-check this post! I had my Vinnie tats done in Baltimore. This is kinda stupid but I liked the fact that it was at an actual tatoo parlor - so sick of doctors' offices & such!
-
Two year out from Vinnies 3d tatts and no fading here. I don't even think about them not being real - love them! Also love not wearing a bra. I still get the feeling when I get a chill but glad not to have to worry about it. Mine were done in Baltimore.
-
I'm trying out some fakes from tattoo girls on Amazon. Very cheap $2.46 on prime even.
Trying decide if I'm going for the Vinnies .......can't decide if I want anything else done to me that doesn't have to be done.
-
You guys are all great - you all echo exactly how I'm feeling. I just don't want any more surgery so I think the tatts are my best option.
-
I had 'origami' nipples done by my plastic surgeon. During that surgery he also reduced the scar tissue left from DIEP surgery and fixed some 'dog ears' left from the tummy tuck portion of DIEP. He offered to minimize my port scar as well. The nipples have shrunk to a perfect size, just enough to hint at nipples when wearing a t-shirt, but not enough to advertise.
Two summers ago I had a local micro-pigmentation specialist (from PS office) create the areolas. She was fantastic! She added some depth to the color, which gave the 3D look. She was very careful to mix the right color for my skin tone. We experimented with a few different shades until I found the perfect match. She was easy to talk to and very professional. Two years later there has been no fading other than what occurred within the first few days. And she charged half as much as some do. She supplied all of the paperwork needed to submit a claim to the insurance company (which I failed to do). All in all, I am more than satisfied with the results and I didn't need to travel.

Is it possible to get nipple recon AND 3D tats?
-
Miscraw - Yes it is! That is what I had done! Love mine and so glad I went that route!
-
This nipple subject is very interesting. Here is my input/experiance:
First, not everyone is a candidate for nipple sparing. I wasn't, bc was too close to nipple.
At 61 I actually had no attachment to the nipples, so to have them gone has never mattered to me. I don't like the scars though.
I think the Vinnie tattoos that I have heard of are amazing. If I were a young woman I probably would choose that.
Like a lot of women I couldn't get out of the Ps office soon enough, to come back for the final touch was just not something I wanted to do. I'm so glad that everyone here recognizes we all need something different and all thoughts are welcome and respected.

For those of you who did nipple recon, did you also do areola recon? I'm leaning toward nipple recon with 3D for areola. Is that common?
-
I did 3D tattoo only.
-
What is everyone's opinion on what is the most realistic and long lasting option on getting nipples/ areola?
-
I had 3D nipple tattoos from Vinnie (they are supposed to not fade like the ones done in doc offices & should last a lifetime). I think they are very realistic looking although of course you can't feel the nipple so that's an aspect to consider.
-
That's what my ps suggested;) 3d Vinnie's.
-
Good luck w/ your decision-making, kingster!
-
Thanks lulu. Has anyone's nipple recon flattened out and was not worth it?
-
anyone knows if Vinnie travels to Asia/europe/Australia for sessions please?
-
Had a BMX and nipple reconstruction on both. One took and one flattened. Had locally done 3-D tattoos but are fading after three years. Am thinking about having the one that took removed (is small and the PS says it is an easy in-office procedure) and then new tattoos by Vinnie or dragonflyink.com/ in San Francisco.
Back to your questions though, I was happy I did the nipple reconstruction. Just would have been happier if they had turned out the same.
-
Did anyone have areola construction? I'm thinking I want to do nipples then with 3D tats. My PS is encouraging me to do areola recon as well though.
-
I also had the "origami" local tissue nipple reconstruction. They looked really big at first but went down to their ultimate size and have not flattened. I'm happy with the result. The biggest issue I have had is that they are not "perfectly" placed and that can bother me if I decide to focus on it. They were at first but one has migrated a bit as my chest loosened up. If you do get them, take your time and make sure your chest has stopped moving. Still, I prefer this result to not doing it. I plan to schedule pigmentation shortly.
-
Mariasnow, how long after the last surgery does your chest stop moving? Maybe a full year? I have fat grafting in 2 weeks.
-
27heart. I know someone on this site that lives in New Zealand. Her daughter did her tattoos. PM me if you want her name. She said that her tattoos turned out beautiful.
-
I just had my nipple reconstruction two weeks ago. I had the "origami" type done and I am very pleased. They are a bit big still, but shrinking. I have to wear donuts for a month, which I don't like, but understand why it is needed. I have follow up in a month with the surgeon. I have my tattooing for the areolas booked for next fall (In Ontario - OHIP pays, but we have to wait for non-emergency procedures, which is okay!).
I cannot stress how much it means to see a nipple when getting changed or showering! It isn't 100% normal looking, but almost, and I no longer have "franken-boobs" or less like then before. Nipples to me, mean that every time I see myself, it is not such a reminder of cancer. I don't forget, but normal, or near normal is good.
The doctor also took out a bit of a flatten area and a scar that was big(keloid?) and causing a issue under one breast. He asked if I minded, and of course not! That helps a lot too.
The freezing in part was fine, except in the scar area, and yikes! But the reconstruction part was fine. Minimal pain, although tender after. It wasn't a modicum as bad as the dye injection for my lymph node biopsy
I know it is very personal/individual, but am glad I did it. I am 42 and not sure if that plays into my decision, but am glad. Although I will be even more glad to be finally done with trips back and forth to the surgeon next year!
I've never heard of grafts from other areas, he just used tissue from my breast.
-
I had some unusual circumstances with a re-do on a lat flap at the same time as VLNT after my nipple recon. As my chest settled my placement is off. It upset me greatly in the beginning when it first showed up but I'm pretty over it right now. I'm showing my doctor in a couple of weeks but I know he will say to leave it alone. I'm waiting for that to book my pigmentation.
