Any Hummingbird Watchers Out There?

SoCalLisa- your photo is beautiful. I saw a huge bumblebee chasing away one of the hummers from the russian sage in my back yard. The bees just cover that in the summer and when the hummers come through, the bees say "get outta here, this is ours!" So I think they definately have a different relationship with the non-hummers!
I filled up one of my feeders again yesterday. My little hummers are hungry!

one more of the king of the feeder

I though you guys would enjoy this article on hummingbirds. I decided I want to be one in my next life!

You might enjoy this article on a woman deeply involved in hummingbird rescue. http://www.opb.org/news/article/npr-the-risks-and-rewards-of-hummingbird-rescue/
She's also written a book on the subject that sounds fascinating.
I heard the program on the way to radiation one day and it certainly gave me something different to think about on the table that day.

Hopeful-t hat is a wonderful article. How nice that you heard the story while in treatment an it gave you something nice to reflect on. Lord knows one needs something positive when lying prone for that experience (I had internal rads, but still......)
My little red rufous seems to be gone now so he must be on his way south on his migration. He guarded that feeder feircely for a week while he was here, but now more of the local hummers are back feeding. I filled up the backyard feeder last week and it is already down 2/3 of the way. They one out front is going down fast too. They must be eating a lot more in preparation for the big flight soon. I always miss them when they are gone by early October.

Lots of hummers here in Ecuador Will post some better photos when we get home and have time to edit them.

-
Can't wait. Did you see the violet earred ones?
-
Mumito- thanks for sharing! Some kinds we don't see up north! Beautiful!
-
9/28- I think the hummers are gone now. I have not seen any in a week or so, but keeping the feeders up until early October as I have seen them here as late as that time (probably migrating down from CO). I always miss them when they go.
In another month, the wintering birds arrive including the sandhill cranes!

I'm in TN. We have just a couple hummers left. I've seen them around the honey suckles but not so much at my feeders anymore. Earlier this year we had a dozen plus regularly. I just love everyone else's beautiful pictures. Maybe by next year I'll figure out how to post my own and/or get better at taking them. Suppose we will be bringing in the hummingbird feeders and buying birdseed and suet soon.
-
Labelle- yes, I will be putting up the seed feeder by November for my little finch friends!
-
Plenty of flowers and keeping a feeder up for the stragglers until a hard frost.
We keep seed and suet feeders up year round.
-
Maybe many came here.
-
SoCalLisa- I guess they track some of our hummers and they go to Costa Rica for the winter. Having been there, I think I understand that too, the most beautiful rain forests there. I wish one of them would invite me to join them!
-
some new ones have hit our yard. Didn't have my camera ready.
-
They are back
-
SoCalLisa- that photo is AWESOME! I am taking my feeders down today.
-
when I looked outside today, this guy seemed to have taken ownership of our swing

Wow, look at those white tuffs of feathers around the feet too! And the tail feathers too, totally unique. Do you know the species?
