Exercise and well being during chemo and radiation

crazy busy( most days, focusing on steps. 10,000-15,000 each day. I did run 3.1 on Sunday and then walked 2 afterwards
-
30.2 miles on my bike, and watched the beautiful sunset over the ocean. Life is good

9/28: 1.25 m (.5 = 2.3, .75 = 2.6) + Fitbit steps + 60 crunches + 150 pedals + resistance band + 10# lifts [10x4] = 6.0 miles
I'm tired after a 3-hour class and various other activities at work.

HI all,
I'M newbie.. just about to start ACT in the next week or two. Still waiting for my onco number... just hoping that the SE won't be too bad and I can still go to work after a few days. I"m a music teacher and don't want to miss any days...I've been in good shape physically, just don't want to be fatigued for too many days!
-
just keep doing whatever exercise you are capable of doing. I really believe it helps clear the toxins out.

Few tips, and yeah, some people will chime in and laugh, but here goes.
Buy coconut oil, keep it everywhere, use it for everything. Costco carries it in a gallon plastic jug. Helps with hair folliculitis, I rubbed in mouth, used on anal and pubic area, and on any rash I got. Couple tablespoons orally, no more constipation.
Monitor sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium levels through treatment. Magnesium is a wonder substance, I take 1 gram per day, 900 mg magnesium glycinate and 100 mg magnesium threonate. Magnesium chloride or Epsom salts baths feel great and help with detoxification. Calcium you want to monitor to make sure it doesn't go high, the others to make sure they don't go low. If the electrolytes (magnesium, potassium and sodium) get out of balance, they can make you feel bad.
Eat small amounts of food constantly, like half a banana, whatever you can get down. Keeping some food in your stomach helps tons with nausea, I never had any. If it gets bad, look into Sancuso patch, you may have to fight to get it.
Choke protein down as you can. The body needs a lot to heal from chemo. Scrambled eggs were one of my go to substances.
Hydrate whenever you can. If water tastes nasty, try adding lemon, lime, or something that makes it palatable. Some women liked coconut water, but it tastes like salty soap to me.
Fresh pineapple is great for scarring, both eating and rubbing on scar tissue.
Coq10 is great for heart, look for the Ubiquinol form. Since you are doing adriamycin, could help with heart function. It is an antioxidant, I cut out all antioxidants two days before and three days after chemo to prevent any interference with chemo killing the bad guys.
Report any tingling, particularly in fingers and toes to doctor. You want to monitor for neuropathy symptoms.
Get vitamin d level up, take d3 with k2, helps it work better. I find sublingual (under the tongue) drops for vitamin d3 work best for absorption.
Don't worry about the wig, just make sure it fits well. Everybody thought I just got a new hair style, nobody, and I mean nobody, knew it was a wig. What hair style are you and head size? I have several wigs and can donate one to you if you want. I have three long ones, and one that is right above shoulder length, kind of dark brown.
Lastly, don't panic, I was in the March forum and we all survived chemo. Hang in there, and ask any questions you want, you can PM me if you want.
Best of luck! You can do this!

Day one post Chemo Round Two (which means, yay, halfway done with Chemo!!): steroids having their usual nice SE of making my knees (oestoarthritis) feel better, and I did my usual mile and a half in record time this am. Going to up my game on the length of my walks now that it is cooler and while the post chemo aftermath going is good (which will probably only be for three days)....too bad steroids aren't a permanent solution (and let me be clear, I hate the way the steroids make me feel other than that I am not nauseated and my knees don't hurt...)
Feeling (a bit too) energized; off to work.

Italychick, How well is your hair coming in?
-
Got my metabolic panel results from Friday--all looks good. I think I can cut back my calcium. Not sure why my sodium is at the higher end of normal--that's certainly not an expression of my diet!
-
K- yay on the good bloodwork. 💃🏿💃🏿

3 miles on the treadmill today. I'm not sure why I find it so hard to get to the gym, but today I did it.
-
Good for you Eileen! I find it hard to get to the gym, and I know why...I'm lazy...sigh. Need to get over that. I was feeling sluggish this am, looking for excuses not to exercise, but saw your post and looked at my treadmill and knew I had to get on. 2.5 mi today. Have volleyball practice with my girls this afternoon and hope to get on the treadmill again this evening.
Always thankful for this thread...helps me so much especially on those lazy days for me...to keep motivated and keep moving.

Mysunshine48, it's coming in pretty good. Slowed down a bit, but I hear Herceptin does that.
-
You rock the short hair, Theresa! I know you had super long hair before.
Thanks for the great tips, but I think the magnesium will solve any constipation problems anyone is having. I upped mine to two a day and I might have to scale it back.
-
Theresa, You look amazing! Ohhhhh, I wish my hair would grow a little faster! Thank you for the beautiful picture!
-
Theresa, you look great!
-
Allison, yeah, sometimes it does that. Some days it gets me, most days it doesn't. You just have to play around with the right dosage for you, but isn't it nice to be able to poop consistently? And sleep? Sometimes my husband gets in trouble, I tell him he gave me too much stuff, but I think he gives me the same amount every day and just once in awhile it totally cleans me out. I definitely don't take it before a bike ride.
Thanks for the hair compliments, I am digging it short for being easy.
My comments were mainly directed to Ornithology but I forgot to put her name in my post.
A bazillion steps, running around the house today after the grandkids, and playing if you're happy and you know it clap your hands. So great fun, lots of play, art therapy. I'm ready for pajamas though. I don't track what I do when they are here, but a ton of laps running around the house screaming in laughter has to count for something

Looking good, Theresa!
Katy, you should post the darling Jack and Tutti video here, too.
I've got two co-workers meeting me for low-impact, low-cardio, senior Zumba on Thursday.
-
-
Thank you. It's a sweet video.
Told my students today, "You can call me by my first name, or Dr ________, but not Mrs ________. There is someone online who calls me Frau Doktor, which is also acceptable."
-
yeah, but Tutti wouldn't put the coconuts on. Cats are stubborn like that.
-
Cats hate wearing the coconut bra. Too much like a harness.

No excercise to speak of today. For well being I went to the dentist and got radiated and had a chocolate mint cupcake. But....my DH finally got home! I haven't seen him in a month! I would have worked out, but I wanted to hang out with him. Can't wait until rads are done so I can start working outside again, and if I'm stuck working in the office, at least I'll have time to work out on my lunch break rather than working thru my lunch break to make up for coming in late from rads...
-
Happy your man is home Jen.
-
You look great Theresa! I haven't started the magnesium yet and don't have constipation problems, rather the opposite problem. Might have to start on a lower dosage to see what happens.
Jen...a month is a long time to be away...so happy for you your DH is home. 😊

Jen, glad he's home. Is fire season wrapping?
-
It's slowing down some! But he's home because his boss is getting married and somehow figured out how to get another crew to take their helicopter for a few days so we could all attend..
