I had a PET scan where there is a radioactive tracer that is injected into you attached to a sugar. I rested for an hour to let it be metabolized in my body. Then they scanned my body to see if there were any other affected areas. There were none, but the scan did pick up some other stuff not related to the cancer. Nodule on my thyroid, small benign tumor on my femur. My surgeon also ordered a breast MRI prior to the consultation to get a better idea of what is going on with the breasts and lymph nodes.

    Hi Marwa:

If breast cancer is suspected from some clinical symptom (e.g., breast lump or other breast change), then imaging is often performed to further assess the situation. This may include diagnostic mammogram(s) and/or ultrasound. Sometimes, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) may be done. If the findings from the imaging tests reaches a certain level of suspicion, then a biopsy (removal of a tissue sample for review by a pathologist) will be recommended. Many biopsies result in benign findings; however, if a biopsy is recommended, it is important to have the biopsy done to know for sure whether the area of concern is benign or malignant.

Sometimes, a routine screening mammogram will discover an area of suspicion. In that case, you would be called back for further imaging, etc. along the same path described above (i.e., diagnostic mammogram(s) and/or ultrasound, etc., etc.)
