My Dad is crazy and I have the pics to prove it!

Now that the weather has cooled down, my 71 yr old father is riding his bike again (I need to too!). Anyway, the other day he brought home a little carrier to pull behind him.

Guess who's his passenger?

My cat, Sybil!

Thanks, Suzie. I am very lucky to have my parents living with me - and they spoil all of the animals (2 dogs, 2 cats) rotten! But Sybil has adopted my dad as her very best buddy - she follows him around from morning til night, just like a puppy

I need to get one of those. I can see it now, me on the bike, my 6 cats in the little carrier and two men in white uniforms chasing after me with a straight jacket......

She just meows softly and looks around. She really worships my dad and is totally at ease when he is in charge. It's an adorable relationship

I just can't believe how your furbaby could sit still in the carrier while your amazing dad was pulling her. My cats just hate the carriers. They know when I take thier carriers out of my closet, that's when they're taken to the vet.

Wow, Donna. Sybil sounds like one of those "soul-mate" kind of cats that can form a very deep connection with humans. One of my two cats is like that. He follows me around the house and when he was an outdoor cat long ago he followed me around the neighborhood and sat on other people's porches till I came back out. Sybil looks like she is an amazing cat. Your Dad is pretty cool too.

You are so right, Celia! I adopted Sybil shortly after my ex-husband and I split up 11 years ago. From the minute I called about the "free kittens to good homes" ad in the paper, Sybil has provided more entertainment and love - I could go on and on. Actually, I could write a book about her antics and how she is constantly evolving and picking up new habits (maybe I will someday).

Just a few days after I brought Sybil home, my parents came out to visit me in California and we decided to drive up the coast along hwy 1 to Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, etc., So, at the tender age of 12 weeks, Sybil was introduced to a little cage. She and I were still in the bonding stage at that time, so she started out with good feelings about the carrier. In fact, she never gets upset until we get inside the vet clinic -- as soon as she picks up the odors, she goes nuts!

So, in the last 11 years, Sybil has traveled thousands of miles, stayed in hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts. Simon has too, but he's much less enthusiastic about it

Sigh, how lucky you are. Those pictures are priceless, brought tears to my eyes, remembering and making me wish that my parents were still around.

My parents had a cat named RC. That cat never walked anywhere because my dad carried him around. It was the sweetest thing.

My sister moved in to my parents house after my mom passed away to take care of my dad. Every morning, my dad and Zip, my sister's cat, shared a donut at the island in the kitchen. My dad sat at one end and Zip sat at another, just waiting for his share of the donut.

Those pictures are so special. I love that Sybil has bonded to your dad. Kind of makes up for biting grandma, hu?

And what does Mr. Simon think of all of this?

Hi Ginger,

I have never taken any of my cats on a plane, but I've seen many people bring small pets on the plane with them.

I recommend your son get a soft-sided carrier and it will fit under the seat. If the cat is really high-strung, it might be a good idea to give it a kitty-downer before the flight. But, if the cat is generally low-key anyway, the tranquilizer might make him feel worse.

Also, if the cat has a tendancy to get car-sick (like my Simon) it might be a good idea to *not* feed it within about two hours of getting on the plane.

Your son should also research this with the specific airling in advance, too. They have rules about how many pets can be on the same plane and they charge extra.

I would also never recommend putting any pet in the cargo bin unless there was no other choice and never ever for an older or fragile pet. (I was on a flight once where we all heard a dog barking frantically below. It was gut-wrenching!)

Debra - I love the story about your dad eating donuts with Zip

As for Syb and grandma...well, they have an *understanding* -- but I do believe that Sybil knows she's one bite away from serious consequences

As for Simon (aka "Lazybones"), as long as he has food and a soft place to sleep, he's pretty content. He does know when my dad sits down to put on his tennis shoes, though, and he runs over to get a little chin scratch while my dad's fingers are down at ground-level
