I have inflammatory breast cancer and have been unable to wear a bra due to pain since my breast became swollen. I have tried a surgical bra but by the afternoon I am pulling at the lower seam under my affected arm and have to remove it, despite using bra extenders. I am 50 years old and really need to wear a bra! What have other people done about this? I still have 3 months of chemo to go.

Surgical bras are among the least comfortable garments I've ever worn. I did chemo before surgery and found that the best solution was a selection of sports bras. I needed some support but my regular underwire bras were impossible. I bought some very light sports bras at Target and some heavier, more expensive ones somewhere else. The latter were very tight and compressive, which felt good sometimes, but not every day. My preference seemed to vary day by day; sometimes the light ones were just right.

I'm five days post bmx and have just gone back to the sports bras (the very light ones). The surgical bra drove me nuts; all that velcro really irritated my skin. Hope this helps.

I'm a DD, and what works for me is to get tank tops, like from Old Navy or somewhere, a size smaller than I normally wear. They need to have elastic fabric in them to work. I have them in all kinds of colors, and they work pretty good under clothes for keeping the girls in check without wearing a bra.
