Nipple reconstruction; when do you know you have an infection?

Hello ladies. I had nipple reconstruction this last Tuesday. Everything went great. I had some bleeding on the right side the first 2 days post surgery. Nothing on the left side. Now, 5 days later, my right nipple is very itchy and it oozes a little bit. Nothing much and it's not blood, but still some yellowish fluid. It seems a little more swollen than the left side too. But no redness, no fever. Does everything sound normal? My PS in 3 and a half hours away... I hope I dont have to worry :-(

Call your doc tomorrow and let him assess. As someone dealing with infection (though not in nipple), definitely better to be cautious. I also have found that emailing photos helps the doc a lot so suggest you do that as well.

Hopefully it's either very mild or nothing at all, but best to be safe

I had nipple reconstruction on a radiated breast. My PS gave me antibiotics for 10 - 14 days - can't remember. After two weeks my areola became red, hot, and swollen and I clearly had an infection around my stitches. Of course this was on a weekend. Saw the PS on Monday and it had already gotten better. Didn't even have to take the next round of antibiotics she gave me.

Your body may fight it, but I second calling your PS. I took a photo to show my PS and it helped convince her my appointment was necessary.

Thank you ladies! That's what I did; emailed pictures! They prescribed an ointment for the weekend and the Dr will look at my pictures today to see if I need to go in. It is very itchy mainly in the morning and there is still a little oozing. I am on antibiotics already (my PS always gives me a prescription after surgery as a precaution) so hopefully things will only get better!

I had nipple reconstruction on both breasts Thursday the 24th. It went well. No real pain at all. A little itchy but I always thought that meant it's healing. I am more concerned because the itchy is on the radiated side. I've been putting aquaphor around the nipple just in case. Good luck ladies.
