Dr. Nolan Karp / NYU

Any stories?

At the moment, I'm strongly considering going with Dr. Guth (BS) together with Dr. Karp (PS) doing what will essentially be a combination of double lumpectomy & breast reduction. (I have multicentric DCIS per biopsies of each area, hopefully there's nothing else to discover!)

I asked "What if I don't get clean margins?  I've been told that if you use oncoplastic procedures you can't re-excise because all the tissue will have been moved around and the surgeon won't know where to go."  He said that he'd be using a technique which woould take much more tissue than a regular lumpectomy, so much wider margins; and that if I still had bad margins I'd need a mastectomy, end of story.  Then we'll move on to the real DIEP discussion.

There are still other surgeons I might consult, but I felt pretty good about him.  Anyone use him or know someone who has?

    Bump for anyone who can tell me more about Karp.

    So far his office staff and he I love, but so scared about sx.

    Sorry I do not know anything about Dr. Karp, but I go to  Dr. Guth, on the recommendation of several ladies from this board, and I think she is wonderful.

    Hi Sweatyspice,

    Could you tell me more about your experience with Dr. Karp? I have DCIS in rt breast. He said he can do nipplesparing bmx for me but I have very large breasts and other Plastic Surgeons said nipplesparing will not work unless I have a lumpectomy/lift first. I am afraid to do a lift because I am afraid it may move the DCIS around if there is any not detected by imaging.

    I am having tough time deciding which surgery to choose. Dr. Karp told me he will try to spare the nipples but didn't go into details as to how exactly he will position the nipple over the smaller implant. I am not a candidate for autologous flaps. The breast surgeon he works with at NYU is not someone I know well (it's not Dr. Guth) but would have to use her if I want to use Dr. Karp. My breast surgeon is someone I've been going to for years and am very comfortable with works with the PS who doesn't think he can save my nipples without the lift first.

    I am doing bmx for DCIS because of a strong family history.

    If you can share your experience with Dr. Karp and how he was during aftercareI will be very greatful.

    For information about Nolan Karp use the "FORCE" (www.facingourrisk.org ) web site "Surgeon Referral Tool" - see link above. There are three woman listed there who have used Dr. Karp and have offered to talk to others about their experience. Also search on the breastcancer.org web site for "Nolan Karp" - there are women on these boards who have used him in the past. One is "Lisamg" - though I don't think she has posted recently. You could try sending her a PM.

    He was my PS, and I love him. A complete pro and an extremely experienced plastic surgeon. Incidentally, my BS was Dr. Guth. They make an amazing team. For full disclosure - I did have my nipples removed although nipple sparing was an option for one of my breasts.

    I had a left NSM with Dr Axelrod, and TE placed by Dr Karp. 41/2 months later, Dr Karp placed an implant in my left, and did a reduction/ lift on my healthy right. My original breasts were 36DDDD. I am now a 36DD-DDD, depending on the bra. Both surgeons are amazing! Of course I do not look or feel the same, as a matter of fact my reduced breast looks so much better! And I am getting used to the implant, not so bad. I look normal in clothes and a bathing suit, and scarring is pretty minimal. 3days after my UMX, I developed a hematoma, And passed out cold. Dr Axelrod answered her cell fone immediately, and told my husband to get me to the ER. We drove past numerous ERs, as I would only be seen at NYU. My choice. Dr Karp met us in the ER, quickly determined the best way to clear the 1500+ cc of blood out of my chest, and kept me from having to be transfused or go back to the OR. I have ALL GOOD THINGS TO SAY ABOUT THESE TWO DOCS!

    PSAnd when I had a small area that concerned me on my healing right breast, I was able to send him a cell phone pic and his asst called me back with simple instructions. Dr Karp knows his stuff and is Great at it! I am so happy Dr Axelrod sent me to Dr Karp. They are a no nonsense (but you can joke with them!) team. I am happy with my results, and so grateful for their expertise
