Excisional Biopsy/Lumpectomy

Hi all,

I am not sure if this is the right category to post, but I would love some encouragement/information.

In January 2016, I am having what is technically an excisional biopsy, but the BS is calling it a lumpectomy because she is going to have to remove some extra layers of tissue around the 2.5cm lump due to Flat Epithelial Atypia.

I am not nervous about the surgery, but I have an active 2 year old at home and will have to arrange assistance for recovery. Can anyone share your experience with recovery after a lumpectomy? How long did it take? Did you have to take strong pain killers? Any information is welcomed.

I had a surgical excision of a 3.9cm lump, and was feeling fine almost immediately. The first evening I took narcotic pain meds. I took ibuprofen the second day, nothing after that. It was super easy to recovery from, actually. I am a fast healer, though, so that is definitely something to consider. I hope it goes well for you!

sanduchi, my tumor was very deep, close to my chest wall. I healed quickly and only needed pain meds a couple of times. Just be careful of stretching and lifting; use ice for a couple of days. You may want to get an open front sports-type bra to wear for a few days, for compression and ease of dressing. I'm not sure where your LX will be, but the breast center that I went to also gave me a small pillow to put between me and my seat-belt and for sleeping. Good luck, I'm sure you'll do fine!:)

I had a lumpectomy with sentinel lymph nodes removed on July 31 followed by re excision surgery on Aug 21 since the margins were not clear. I was very nervous, but really had minimal pain. I took pain meds the first day but really didn't need them. Just afraid of what it would be like if I didn't. Lol. Good luck to you and your little one.

Thank you so much ladies! It's great to know that recovery is shorter than I expected. My lump is superficial so hopefully it will be a quick recovery for me. Here's to no more worrying about this little lump!
