Exercise and well being during chemo and radiation

Allison - my fitbit does ok matching w/ the elliptical sometimes, but not with the treadmill. Someone on here once said they remove their fitbit during elliptical or treadmill work and log the info from the machine later because of it. My treadmill was off by a mile!
-
I could have sworn it was working before but I know it isn't because I counted steps for one minute and multiplied it by the minutes and it wasn't even close. But now at least I don't feel so bad about logging only 4k steps. I know it is closer to 10k now.
-
1 hour spin class, said 19 miles. My riding buddy Cheryl is sick, but back on the bike again on Saturday
-
walked 1 1/2
1 mile elliptical
Various light weights and stretching
Didn't even try to figure the steps
-
Has anybody started doing weights? I started back on Monday, and yesterday had that yummy sore feeling from doing weights, but no swelling thank goodness. I can't believe how out of shape my arms and gut got, even with the bike riding and spin classes
-
I am doing light weights only - 1-2 lbs in each hand. And isometric stuff. That's a bit Over 200 pounds.
-
I know Whitney is doing some impressive weight lifting from reading her posts on Facebook. I got to 50 pounds for arms and about 260 for legs. I was afraid to go over 50 on my arms. But I think Whitney has been dead lifting 135 pounds
-
yes, she is. That's the number I read on FB too. Pretty amazing!
Hey Whitney! You are amazing!
-
Will be 10k steps before long. Just through daily life. Moving more stuff from my ex-house, a bit of gardening, etc.
-
Hiked today. Been a godawful slacker since I found that stupid fat lump. Still waiting on final path.
-
I'm allowed to lift 10# now, not supposed to increase weight but can increase sets over time. No flies or anything that could cause bursitis or rotator cuff injury.
-
9/23: Fitbit steps + stretches + 60 crunches + 150 pedals + 10# lifts [10x4] + 1.0 (2.4 MPH) = 6.3 miles
Took it a bit easier today since I slept badly, then I was reviewing or making presentations for new students pretty much all day from 8:00-4:30 and I'm beat.
-
ksusan, do you think you would be allowed to use more weights if you had a lumpectomy instead of mastectomy? I so want to progress with weights, but then the specter of lymphedema raises up to haunt me. I've probably felt myself up a thousand times since Monday, checking for any swelling. I've felt myself up more in the past 10 months than in my whole life
-
Theresa, my PT's restriction is based on having had nodes removed. I think it's worth you getting a consult and developing a plan. My BS, an otherwise lovely person, released me to do any physical activity about two months after surgery--having two friends who weren't warned about lymphedema and developed it after fairly innocuous activity (raking and housework, respectively), I discarded this permission in favor of building up slowly with PT/LE monitoring.
-
Go, Whitney!! You ARE awesome.
I need to pay attention to the lifting stuff. I try not to lift over 5 as instructed but who the heck knows what weighs 5 and what is over? I had two nodes removed. I need to read through all the lymphedema stuff the lady gave me. Some days, I just can't deal. (I never watched the chemo tutorial).
-
thanks ksusan. I haven't dwelled too much (ok, well maybe some) on the lymphedema issue because I was carrying my 35 pound grandkids almost immediately after surgery. They don't understand the meaning of the word no. I still get a tiny bit of swelling right at my lumpectomy site, but the surgeon said that can take up to two years to resolve. But I can still wear my rings, and so far, nothing going on in my arm. A girl can hope! She also said she detected no lymphedema in my arm or surgical site. When she checked me she focused on the area right above my armpit, I think where the muscle is in my chest. So that's the area I check the most.
Allison, I'm with you. I don't go looking for issues. Otherwise, I would go crazy! I didn't read the chemo literature either, all gloom and doom, and really, did we have any choice? I just relied on what the MO and nurses told me
-
I find it helpful to remember that "a pint's a pound the world around." A gallon of milk is 8.6 pounds, and most of us have a good muscle memory of what it feels like to lift a gallon of milk.
-
I lifted heavy all through Chemo... since about 3 weeks post lumpectomy..... I am blindly going with what feels ok... LOL
It's prob stupid but Ive just put blinders on with regards to lymphedema... I refuse to acknowledge it... and ive not had problems so far... knock on wood!:)
-
Totally understand, Leigh.
-
I've had my blinders on too. I don't think I have lymphedema but always worried it might come so I just try to avoid lifting anything with that arm, and I had 9 nodes out. Been walking/slow running for exercise, but know I need to add strength training to my exercise. Had asked MO and RO a few times about wanting a PT referral, but they seemed to just brush it aside like it wasn't gonna happen. Felt guilty too not pushing harder for it, since I've seen so many of you talking about PT and lymphedema
Finally at follow up survivorship appointment with another MD, got myself a PT appointment. I figure better to do this right, I don't want to deal with triggering lymphedema, and have to deal with yet another thing!

I only had one node removed, but lots of lymph is affected by BMX. I have been dxd with truncal lymphedema. I have swelling on both sides. The MLD massage and constant, meaning daily compression, unless I am literally doing nothing, helps. They say it will be a management issue the rest of my life. Since everyone was always focused on my right arm, where the node was taken, the truncal LE didn't get addressed timely. since I am successful keeping the swelling down now (but not ever gone completely), the 24/7 pain I had been experiencing since December has lessened considerably. From a 5-6 to a 2-3, which is so much more manageable. I'm still on pain meds, but lots less than before.
-
That's good news, Katy.
-
Thanks for both comments, Allison, here and there. (In March)

Dear Jb, first of all, let me say that I am so impressed with what you have done exercise-wise post-chemo! I say this with the sincerest of intentions that I am concerned that you are faltering a bit and I think you need an intervention, as you appear to be at risk of perhaps falling into the amotivated camp. I recognize that there are mental aspects that can present challenges and potentially derail you. Once you commence a new exercise program, the 3 month point is high risk for motivation. Recall you longterm goal. Break it down into small achievable goals – weekly and monthly, or even daily. My intention is not to harass, but to encourage you to attain your desired outcome, so I hope you take this in the spirit in which it is given. You can do this; you will do this - I am rooting for you! I want to see your achieve that big turnaround you promised. Hugs and best wishes.
-
Downdog! Good to see you! Intervention accepted in the spirit in which it is offered. It is starting to cool off now and that will help a lot.
Thank you. And great to see you. Good all is well with you. Please don't be astranger.

I went to senior, low-impact Zumba today. Other than the part where it awakened all of my middle school PE anxieties, it seemed about right for speed and exertion.
-
Did my standard mile and a half walk today. I could smell smoke again, for the first time in over a week. Plan to walk more this weekend, hope the wind changes...
-
Ksusan: my sympathies. Middle school PE anxieties are rather why I've avoided group classes such as Zumba or yoga.
-
Ksusan, I second that. PE was the one subject I failed on purpose. Good work facing your fears though!
Walked around a few blocks. Back on the wagon with the healthy coping strategies tomorrow!
-
ksusan, you made me chuckle.
