Biopsy came back benign but Dr is not convinced
My diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound showed a fluid filled mass on top of a solid mass. Birad 5. The radiologist came in and sat with me and explained that in his experience that it looked like a primary breast cancer and that I needed a biopsy and MRI right away. I had the biopsy the following week. My surgeon's office called to reschedule my appointment until after my MRI, which is the 17th, and I flipped out. I told her that I couldn't wait another week to find out what the biopsy showed. The nurse then tells me that the biopsy came back benign but that my Dr isn't convinced that that is accurate and want s to see the MRI and possibly schedule an open biopsy. I am relieved with the biopsy results but at the same time I am seriously anxious over the Dr's reaction. Has anyone else been through this? Can needle biopsies be wrong?

Sometimes the doctor decides that even though the needle biopsy is benign that that result is discordant with what he is seeing on imaging. He wants just wants to make sure.
It happens infrequently but I have seen a handful of people go through that here.
Here's a link to search results I got here when i put in "discordant"

My sister had a biopsy for a large lump in 2008 that came back benign. Her doctor, like yours, wasn't convinced that it was benign. He said he wanted to do another biopsy. Thank goodness he did because he ended up finding a 4.5 cm malignant tumor. Hopefully yours is benign, but be thankful that you have a doctor that wants to be sure.

I had something like this happen. I found a lump on the left side. The radiologist said he thought I should get a biopsy because although it looked like a fibroadenoma there was one small area that was obscured by my extremely dense breast tissue. I got the biopsy and it came back as a fibroadenoma. The surgeon who performed the biopsy told me I could watch it for 6 months and then see if it had grown or we could do an excision on the lump. I asked her what she thought I should do and she told me she wanted to take it out, just to be sure because she didn't like the way it looked. Turned out that 2.2cm of the 3.9cm x 3cm lump was IDC. Personally I think it's a good idea to have it out, just to be on the safe side.

I just went through this. I had a cyst that looked ok, and came back ok, but then they did an ultra sound and something else behind that cyst and I had to have an open biopsy done with a wire leading to the area. It all came back negative. Both radiologist and surgeon both thought it was not cancer and it was not. I hope you get the same results.

Thank you everyone for your input and support. Had the MRI on 9/17 and I see my surgeon on the 22cnd for the results and plan of action. I have another question now though. Since the biopsy, I have developed what feels like a cord running from where she took the biopsy to the underside of my breast. Has anyone experienced this, is it normal?
-
Nona, it is called cording, or more properly, Mondor's Disease. It is sometimes caused by trauma (surgery) to the breast and, I think, resolves itself. Do a search here for "cording" or "Mondor's". There are quite a few threads on the topic.

Thank you!

An hour and 40 minutes until I find out if this ends or what? I am trying g to stay positive but I am literally a nervous wreck.
-
Fingers crossed for you!

Thank you Melissa, no answers yet. Another mammogram on Friday followed by an open biopsy/lumpectomy the following Friday. Hopefully we will have concrete answers by October 7.

I think the excisional biopsy was probably in the cards as soon as the core results were discordant. I thought the surgical one was easier than the core myself. It is all a huge headache and stress though, isn't it? For what it is worth, several of these I've seen have come back benign anyway.
-
It is in fact a HUGE headache and stress but I am trying to stay positive. There is nothing that I can do to change anything at this point so I am just trying to go about life as usual. I am in school full-time and working full-time and trying to keep things together at home so it's not as if I can't keep busy. It is such a big help to have found this site! Thank you again!

I went through something similar. Birads 5 and a beautiful benign 14 gauge ultrasound guided biopsy. I was so happy, but 14 hours later, was told it was discordant. So glad the radiologist was tenacious about it. Excisional biopsy found 7mm of IDC. Now we have to go back in for some lymph nodes. It is not easy to have your diagnosis drag out over weeks and months. But that's better than not catching it as early as possible. Please let us know how your test comes out. This place really saved my sanity. Highly recommend you stick around!

Nonamorris if it makes you feel any better I am in almost the exact same boat as you. I had a Birad 5 score followed by a US guided Core Biopsy which came back benign and I am scheduled to meet with the breast surgeon on 9/29 to discuss next steps. I am breathing a little easier with the benign result but I just need to know 100%!!!!! Praying for you.
-
I too have had a benign biopsy which turned out to be cancer. It's nervewracking to wait for a correct diagnosis, but better now than later when you add regret to the anxiety. And, if it truly is benign, you have still done the right thing.

Thank you everyone for the support! It really helps to have someone to talk to about all of this. My husband can't even entertain the idea that this could be cancer. He lost his first wife to cancer. I want to be positive about this but I also need to talk about a contingency plan in case we get answers that we don't want. Noangel here's to hoping to be the 5 percent. I will keep you all in my prayers!

Excisional biopsy done yesterday. I can't stop shaking. My husband just doesn't get why I am so cranky. I feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest. My husband just keeps saying how everything is going to be fine, like if he says it eough, it will be true. I am so trying to hold it together. We haven't said anything to kids (who are grown ) so I can just break down. Thanks for letting me vent! In my next life, I would very much like an easy button!

Thank you everyone for your support and encouragement! The exisional biopsy came back B9!!!!!!! So incredibly thankful! Good luck to you all and thank you so much for being there!

That's fantastic news! Congratulations!

I'm so glad for you. I know that is an enormous weight off your mind.

Hope this helps..... I had a Birads 4 lump that the radiologist said looked very suspicious on both the mammo and ultrasound. I asked her if it was possible that the biopsy could be negative. She said yes but then she would either do another biopsy or send me to a breast surgeon to remove it. Well the biopsy came back positive but what I got from that was sometimes the biopsy can be a false negative because they didn't get a good specimen. However it's NEVER cancer until they can prove it! Good luck.

That is such wonderful news to hear!!!!! Good for you.... now enjoy your day. HUGS!!!
-
Such wonderful news! Thankful it was benign. Hug your husband extra tight tonight!
