oophorectomy recovery time?

Can anyone give me an idea what to expect? I was very surprised when my surgeon said I could be out of work for two weeks! Any tips?

    Hi Readytorock,

    As I remember it, the recovery was fairly easy (laparotomy) -- anesthesia being the worst of it... I don't remember much pain. Took tylenol only after all my surgeries, though... Hopefully, someone with a clearer memory will be along shortly :) Best.

    I looked back at some PM's from March (oophorectomy time) and saw that I walked a slow half mile the day after... I had some discomfort where they took a biopsy. Tylenol and Advil for a few days took care of it. I would think if you handle anesthesia well, you would not need more than a week? However, everyone is different. You should plan for a a long recovery and then be pleasantly surprised, in my opinion. I know "open" procedures require more time for recovery. Take care.

    I was good the next day but fatigued so I took it easy. I was careful on lifting for a few weeks, but otherwise I was good.

    I had my salpingo oophorectomy at the same time as my tissue expander placement. The ovary part was really pretty easy. I was swollen from the air they put in your belly, but otherwise if it can be done laproscopically I think you will find you feel well pretty quickly. They mostly do not want you to lift too much.

    Having both surgeries at once gave me a few challenges, but I was back to work in 2 weeks. I could have probably been back in one. I did not have to have any follow up with my gyno since I was seeing my plastics guy for the new boobs. I had no real issue with the ovaries.

    Thank you for your responses! Any more input from ladies out there? I called my surgeon's office yesterday and they wouldn't give me a note to return to work for a minimum of two weeks. Am I in for more than I expected?

    I just had a double salpingo prophylactic oophorectomy on Sept 11 and the funny thing is I barely had any of the gas pain that I was worried about BUT I have been bleeding since Tuesday (4 days after surgery) heavy non-stop bleeding- my period apparently which I didn't think was possible after ovary removal!! I called the surgeon and they just said to go to my doctor to discuss birth control pill or HRT (which I am already taking). So they gave me a note for 2 weeks off too originally but I don't know how I will be able to work with this bleeding. It's constant and I am not allowed to wear a tampon!!

    Hi Readytorock,

    You may have already had your surgery, I didn't see a date there. I had a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy 4 days ago. I had a BMX with one TE insertion on Sept 21 (the other had major complications and now can't be done until after rads). Anyhow I guess I thought that after the BMX this would be a walk in the park but it was not. The first 3 days were very very painful from the CO2 gas they fill your abdominal cavity with. Honestly, it was worse than being 9 months pregnant. On top of that, I guess because I expected it to be so easy, I was an emotional wreck. It was very difficult to be just starting to feel better and then, wham, be hit with one more thing. Having said all of that, it is day 4 and I have definitely turned a corner. Not too much pain, although I'm still moving gently. I can walk and drive, and even painted my bathroom today (slowly). So... be prepared for the worst and then be pleasantly surprised if it ends up better than that. If there's one thing I've learned from all of this it's to expect the unexpected. I would agree with the 2 weeks off work. Good luck!
