Is lymphedema ever just in the armpit?
freaking out as I am out of town for 2 weeks helping a relative move. I lifted about 20 cartons today and now I have a swollen area in the middle of my armpit. My arm is very weak so I was using my body and good arm to lift and weak arm to hold. It's ablour the size of the distance between the knuckle and finger tip on my pinkie. If I was home I'd be running to the MO as it is sor and feels firm. Should I be freaking out and looking for an out of state Mo

Chloesmom, lymphedema can do anything--show up in a single area or cover lots of territory. Which isn't to say this is LE, because I sure don't know if it is or not. But I'd suspect that since you've been doing way more lifting than usual, this is a reaction to that rather than a concern for the MO.
How long will you be there? They usually suggest reporting symptoms that last more than 2 weeks, so if you're going to be there longer than that you might want to give your own MO a call just for reassurance.
Be well! Gentle hugs,
Binney -
Thanks Binney! I forgot about the 2 week deal. I will be home in 2 1/2 weeks so hopefully it will be better by then. never used to freak out like this!
-
It's easy to freak out when it comes to LE. I scratched up my LE arm moving furniture,, didn't notice it and the next day had pink areas all around it. Thankfully it did not develop into anything, but damn,,,, I hate having to be SO vigiliant about watching out for stuff. I hope it resolves itself, Chloesmom. -
I had it in my armpit first. It often feels like I have a wad of fabric under my arm when I rest my arm by my side.
to my way of thinking, yes, you did something to yourself or aggravated LE by moving boxes.
It is always something, isn't it?

Look for posts on MLD (manual lymph drainage)--it's something you can do now, and that might be helpful for all of us to build into our daily routines. I have armpit swelling from radiation right now and manual drainage and ibuprofen reduce it a lot.

Mine has shown up in the armpit after 14 years of diagnosis. I had both arms loaded with groceries back in the spring, and reached up and pulled the hatch down on my car with arms loaded with 2 ltr drinks..( I didn't want to make a second trip..big mistake). I had been troubled with LE from the beginning, but not bad LE. I had forgotten about the car episode, it didn't hurt right away. One day while getting my shower for work I felt a swelled area under the arm, and it was sore. I went to my family doc, and my gyn. They both said it did not feel like a mass, and sent me for a diagnostic mamo, and ultra sound. No cancer. After a couple months it got better, swelling never completely went away. Over the summer I have noticed the swelling in my arm and hand getting worse. My arm, breast, shoulder and back aches a lot. The swelling is worse in the morning, and aches are worse in the evening. We were preparing for my son and daughter-in-law to move in with us while they build their house, and I got crazy moving furniture and cleaning last month. Then to add insult to injury I was walking their dog ( big dog) he saw something and yanked the leash, and now I am back to square one. Pain again, and this LE seems to be in my trunk and getting worse in my arm. I guess it's time to find a therapist. Can anyone recommend a compression bra with sleeve. I was glad to find this particular topic. I hope everything turned out ok with chloesmom. There is always something to worry about, even 14 years later.
-
paintTHEsky: sorry to hear that you have joined us "swell sisters". I would recommend looking at StepUpSpeakOut.org for TONS of lymphedema information. It will give you links for help finding a qualified LE therapist and there are links for finding garments. It would probably be best if you could get to see a therapist first, so that you can get your arm measured properly for a sleeve and gauntlet or glove. WearEase makes compression bras and I use EAB Medical breast binders,, they also have compression bras.

Thanks so much. I'll check out the web site. I am beginning to find out, I can live a pain-free life without doing heavy house work. Bummer!!!!

I just saw this thread and my lymphedema is also in my armpit now. My therapist recommended something called a mini axilla pad to wear at night held in place either by a sports bra or other compression top. You can google it and find some info. I tried to insert a link but it wouldn't let me. If anyone has any experience using this please tell me/us your experience. I haven't got mine in yet but hopefully it will help. I've been so busy and tired lately that I've let my MLD slide. I notice I get more sore in all areas discussed above when I don't do MLD for a couple of times then start up again or when I do too much lifting. Ugh. Fun never ends!

follow up report. The swelling gradually went down. I went to an osteopath that has a holistic approach and uses Manual techniques. He found the lymph stations near my collar bone to be very sluggish. It's a little puffer than the other, but doesn't hurt now Thanks for info all

I had my sentinel node biopsy a month ago. Have had the lump under the arm the whole time now. No one seems concerned. It was drained once. Now there is pain into the breast. I am freaking out but after reading these posts feel a little better. Just don't want something more to worry about.
-
Grammy4, if your lump can be drained, it's not lymphedema. It's more likely a post-surgical seroma, which can be drained again but will eventually resolve on its own. But of course you could be dealing with both. A visit to a well-trained lymphedema therapist can get you both a clearer diagnosis and some resolution. Here's how to find one near you:

Here's a link to the mini axilla pad Luvmydobies suggested above:

I've never used the mini axilla pad, but I do use a Kimbe Swell Spot, day or night to control my issues with swelling there. I need it to cover a bit more area. It's relatively comfortable, and relieving the swelling really helps with the aching and pain:

Gentle hugs to all,
Binney -
Binney, I don't know what we would do without you! You're the best! Thanks for the links. If my axilla mini doesn't work well I'll check into the Kimbe Swell Spot.

I have one more question is the LE more painful at the end of the day. Gee wiz I'm in pain tonight. When it acted up in the spring it was bad, but I think this is the worst yet. When I get up in the morning it hardly hurts at all, then by bed time I am miserable.
-
Skypainter, I think that's a common pattern for LE. But other things can affect it as well--like weather or, for some, diet. I'm always achier in the late afternoon and evening. If I have something active planned for the evening I try to take it easier during the day, elevate as much as possible, not strain, drink plenty and keep up the deep breathing. LE takes planning (sigh!)
Binney -
Thank you Binney. I have some art projects I want to work on, I guess I'll have to pace myself. You are right about the planning. For instance, if I don't rest the arm, I don't want to cook supper, and so on.
-
Binney: how do you keep the Kimbe in place? Compression Tee? I've never been able to find a compression Tee that worked for me as a uni-boober. I see my LE therapist tomorrow,,, she went to the conference in San Fran, so I'm hoping she has some new ideas on dealing with my truncal issues.
-
Hi, Glennie,
I use a WearEase slimmer, and that keeps it in place really well.
http://www.wearease.com/wear-ease-products/compres...
There's a picture on that page with another Swell Spot--the Kimbe Spot doesn't stick up like that one does; it stays in the axilla.
Let us know what you discover!
Binney -
Will do, my appt is tomorrow AM. I'll show her this pic of the slimmer too. Does it really stay down, and not ride up? I don't really need compression all the way down to my hips. hmmmmmm
-
Binney, and anyone else who wants to chime in:
I showed my LE therapist the Slimmer (style 910) and she showed me the compression cami (style 912). Has anyone used this one? Does it work well for keeping Swell Spots in place as the Slimmer does? She thinks the cami would be better for me as I don't need compression down to my hips,, the cami is shorter than the Slimmer.
-
Glennie, the cami is newer. It has wider straps and for now it only comes in teal. Kind of a bright teal at that. Aside from the wider straps it's constructed like the slimmer on the top, so I'm sure it would be just as good at holding the swell spot in place. I was planning to wait to order one until they offer it in some other colors. Black would be nice.
Let us know when you get one, please! Hugs,
Binney -
will do. I like teal but it will be hard to wear under other clothes,, black or white would be better.

Thanks all for your posts. Very helpful. I will tell you what I experienced. I was at MO last week and she said just as you said it will subside in time. Then earlier this week I had the largest bump under the arm since I started with all this and terrible pain in the breast. Well, I don't currently have a BS (long story) and am getting established with one now... In any event two days later the lump under the arm was significantly smaller and the pain in the breast was subsiding. So my theory is the thing is starting to drain on its own. I do have BS appointment this week.
Thanks again all
