Scared and needing support

Hi, just joined this community. I've had left breast and armpit pain for about a year. I'm 50, post-menopausal and have dense breast tissue. Abnormal mammogram and ultrasound 4 months ago showed only enlarged node in breast. Pain continuing, so saw breast surgeon last week who says she feels more going on than node. MRI scheduled tomorrow. I just got over thyroid cancer a few months ago and am tired of my "patient" status--not wanting to share this breast problem with my larger community unless it turns out to be cancer. But I'm really scared and realize it's going to take some time before I know definitively.

I'm curious what the results of the MRI might tell me and how soon a biopsy might be ordered if needed?

Thank you!!

I am sorry that you have found your way here. Hopefully it turns out to be something other than cancer.

I can't answer your biopsy question since mine was after the ultrasound and mammogram.

My MRI confirmed what they saw on the ultrasound for size. It also showed other area of concern. Just abnormal images in the area between the two sites. So it gave my surgeon a better understanding that the whole breast will need to be removed.

Hi Esalenmama and welcome to Breastcancer.org,

We're sorry you're going through this anxious time. You may want to check out the main Breastcancer.org site's page on Breast MRI for Diagnosis and Monitoring for information about what details an MRI can provide.

We hope this helps! Please keep us posted on how you make out!

I'm in a bit of a waiting game as well, but I had an MRI with contrast on a Wednesday and received a call on Thursday afternoon. They scheduled and MRI guided biopsy for the following week. I had those results within a couple days.

Hopefully you don't have to wait too long.
